5 John Ralph Willis John Ralph Willis was born in 1938 in Lorain, Ohio. He receive his B.A. in history from the University of Arizona in 1960, an his M.A. from Boston University the following year. In the course of his grauate work, he was a Woorow Wilson Fellow, a John Hay Whitney Opportunity Fellow, an a Marshall Scholar. In he was an aministrative officer in the Peace Corps, concerne with a number of African countries, particularly Ghana an Sierra Leone. He continue his stuies in African history at the School of Oriental an African Stuies in Lonon, where in 1970 he complete his Ph.D. issertation uner the title Umar ibn Sa i al-futi al-turi (c ) an the Doctrinal Basis of His Islamist Reform Movement in the Western Suan. By this time he ha also embarke on an acaemic career an ha taught at the University of Birmingham in Englan an the University of Wisconsin Maison. In 1969 he was appointe assistant professor in the Department of History at the University of California Berkeley. He came to Princeton in 1972 as associate professor of Near Eastern Stuies. He has serve as full professor in that epartment since The major part of John s scholarly work has centere on Islam in Africa; in particular, on the iffusion of Islam an Islamic institutions in West an North Africa.
