( ف س ٱل م ط ٮ م ن ة (ي أ يت ہ ا ٱلن Surah Al Fajr 27 Class #5 6. Heavenly, upper nafs ( (نفوس سماوية علوية Class #6 7. Wild, violent nafs ( (نفوس سبعية غضبية Class #7 8. Wild, violent nafs ( سبعية غضبية (نفوس / Animalistic, temptations nafs ( حيوانية شهوية (نفوس Class #8 INTRODUCTION The best One to tell us about our nafs is the One who created the nafs, and only He can tell us the reality of our nafs. We discussed that this nafs is inclined to three things that it loves: They are three types: o Heavenly, upper nafs ( (نفوس سماوية علوية they are always looking high, wanting to do what Allah (swt) loves, and they have the angels as their awliya in the duniya and akhira. This was discussed last week. 1

2 o Wild, violent nafs ( (نفوس سبعية غضبية this nafs is very arrogant and dominating, it has the shaitan as its companion, we will continue discussing this nafs today in sha a Allah. (نفوس حيوانية شهوية ( nafs o Animalistic, temptations With the knowledge, it will teach you to overcome the nafs that is wild and violent. The shaitan is their companion and they will cast words of evil to come out of their mouth. If you are dealing with such a nafs, then you need patience and ask Allah (swt) to guide them. And to overcome such a nafs, then we need to seek the help of Allah (swt). WILD, VIOLENT NAFS ( (نفوس سبعية غضبية THE SHAITAN TAKES A SHARE Because the shaitan is the partner of this nafs, they will have a share in their: o Wealth: earning it unlawfully o Children: we don t want our children to be shared with the shaitan. We don t want the shaitan to be dictating evil to our children, subhan Allah. o Spouses: that is why when having a relation, the Prophet (pbuh) said to make a dua a, otherwise the shaitan takes a share, subhan Allah. o Eat with them o Drink with them o Sit with them o Sleep with them We have to always purify ourselves, we want to know the reality of ourselves so that we know what to purify we have to account ourselves. EVIDENCE THAT THE SHAITAN WILL TAKE A SHARE WITH THE NAFS: ق ال ٱذ ه ب ف م ن ت ب ع ك م ن ه م ف إ ن ج ه ن م ج ز ا ؤ ك م ج ز ا ء مو ف ورا ) ٣٦ ( و ٱس ت ف ز ز م ن ٱس ت ط ع ت م ن ہ م ب ص و ت ك ( :63-64 Surah Al Isra a ((Allâh) said: "Go, and ) و أ ج ل ب ع ل ي ہ م ب خ ي ل ك و ر ج ل ك و ش ار ك ه م ف ى ٱ ل م و ٲل و ٱ ل و ل د و ع د ه م و م ا ي ع د ه م ٱلشي ط ن إ ل غ ر ورا ) ٣٦ ( whosoever of them follows you, surely! Hell will be the recompense of you (all) - an ample recompense. (63) "And befool them gradually those whom you can among them with your voice (i.e. songs, music, and any other call for Allâh's disobedience), make assaults on them with your cavalry and 2

3 your infantry, share with them wealth and children (by tempting them to earn money by illegal ways - usury or by committing illegal sexual intercourse), and make promises to them." But Satan promises them nothing but deceit (64) Allah (swt) is telling Iblees to go and whoever follows you, then let them follow you and for all will be the hellfire. So not only do they even share with the shayateen in the duniya, but in the hereafter as well, subhan Allah. Your faith and your good deeds are like a fortress / protection over the shaitan. But in this case, this person has no shelter so the shaitan, by his voice, will consult and dictate them to indulge in sins. WHAT DOES THE SHAITAN DO TO THEM? (And befool them gradually those whom you can among them with your (و ٱس ت ف ز ز م ن ٱس ت ط ع ت م ن ہ م ب ص و ت ك ) voice): The shaitan is allowed to encourage his awliya to commit sins. Notice, Allah (swt) did not say whisper but voice of the shaitan to show it is stronger, may Allah (swt) protect us. Ameen. (make assaults on them with your cavalry and your infantry): Bring to them all (و أ ج ل ب ع ل ي ہ م ب خ ي ل ك و ر ج ل ك ) of your armies towards these people. This includes to bring on any of the followers / armies of the shaitan to this nafs. Because this nafs is so evil and arrogant, the shaitan will even bring armies towards this nafs. We ask Allah (swt) to protect us. Ameen. (share with them wealth and children): The shaitan will be a partner in their (و ش ار ك ه م ف ى ٱ ل م و ٲل و ٱ ل و ل د ) wealth and children just the thought of it is scary. Allah (swt) has allowed the shaitan to do this to such a type of nafs, why? Because they did not purify themselves. 3

4 (and make promises to them." But Satan promises them nothing but (و ع د ه م و م ا ي ع د ه م ٱلشي ط ن إ ل غ ر ورا) deceit): Allah (swt) allowed the shaitan to give a promise to these people, but the shaitan does not keep his promise, he only deceives the shaitan will say eat this, do this, drink this, etc. He will only beautify it, but he is a big enemy and deceiver. This nafs is not trying to purify itself with the help of Allah (swt). So these people are having the fitna of the nafs and fitna of the shaitan. So you need to overcome yourself (the nafs) first, so that you can overcome the shaitan. Because if you do not overcome yourself, then the shaitan will come. CONSOLE FOR THE BELIEVER ع ب اد ى ل ي س ل ك ع ل ي ه م س لط ن و ك ف ى ب ر ب ك و ڪ يل ( 65: Surah Al Isra a ("Verily! My slaves (i.e the true believers of ) إ ن Islâmic Monotheism), - you have no authority over them. And All-Sufficient is your Lord as a Guardian.") Look at how Allah (swt) addresses His special servants, may Allah (swt) give us the honor to be His special servants, ameen. When you are going and fleeing to Allah (swt) then you are a true slave of Allah (swt). Though we are all the slaves of Allah (swt), but there are those who realize and those who do not, subhan Allah. This nafs does not realize it is a slave of Allah (swt). Allah (swt) is telling the shaitan that he will not have power or authority over His true believing slaves. How can you survive in your life? Be a slave of Allah (swt) and that will be sufficient for you to have your Lord as your Guardian and Disposer of affairs, subhan Allah. This means you need to rely on Allah (swt) and He will not give the power and authority to the shaitan, subhan Allah. When you trust and rely, it should be Allah (swt) alone Allah is sufficient for you, subhan Allah. And this gives us great relief and comfort because it is uneasy to hear that the shaitan becomes a partner, consultant, and dictator to such a nafs. So the key is to be slave of Allah (swt) you need to behave like a servant of Allah (swt). You need to have submission, humiliation, and to surrender to Allah (swt). 4

5 (نفوس حيوانية شهوية ( NAFS ANIMALISTIC, TEMPTATIONS The love of this nafs is its desire, its concern is: o What they drink o What they eat o What they wear o Their relation This nafs is just looking down to the earth, very low, and just wants to satisfy its desires. EVIDENCE SURAH AL FURQAN ه و ٮه أ ف أ نت ت ك ون ع ل ي ه و ڪ يل ) ٦٦ ( أ م ت ح س ب أ ن أ ڪ ث ر ه م ي س م ع ون أ و ي ع ق ل ون إ ن ( :43-44 Surah Al Furqan إ ل ه ه ۥ أ ر ء ي ت م ن ٱتخ ذ (Have you (O Muhammad SAW) seen him who has taken as his ilâh ) ه م إ ل ك ٱ ل ن ع م ب ل ه م أ ض ل س ب يل ) ٦٦ ) (god) his own vain desire? Would you then be a Wakîl (a disposer of his affairs or a watcher) over him? (43) Or do you think that most of them hear or understand? They are only like cattle; nay, they are even farther astray from the Path. (i.e. even worst than cattle). (44)) This nafs will just care about fulfilling its desires and it cannot understand and hear the truth. So the barrier from the truth is following the desire. And they are even more astray than the cattle, the animals. May Allah (swt) protect us. Ameen. WHAT IS THE SOLUTION FOR THE BAD NAFS TO BECOME A HEAVENLY NAFS? Beneficial knowledge and with it you will get mental power. And the righteous good deeds and with it you will get practical power. Of course deeds performed for the sake of Allah (swt) and following the Sunnah. When a person does this, then they will have high levels. 5

6 و م ن ي أ ت ه ۦ م ؤ م ن ا ق د ع م ل ٱلصل ح ت ف أ و ل ٮ ك ل ه م ٱلدر ج ت ٱل ع ل ى ) ٥٧ ( ج ن ت ع د ن ت ج ر ى من ت ح ت ہ ا ٱ ل ن ہ ر ( :75-76 Surah Ta Ha (But whoever comes to Him (Allâh) as a believer (in the Oneness of (خ ل د ين ف يہ ا و ذ ٲل ك ج ز ا ء م ن ت ز كى ) ٥٣ ) Allâh), and has done righteous good deeds, for such are the high ranks (in the Hereafter), (75) 'Adn (Eden) Paradise (everlasting Gardens), under which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever: such is the reward of those who purify themselves (by abstaining from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which Allâh has forbidden and by doing all that which Allâh has ordained). (76)) You need to come to Allah (swt) as a believer, which comes from beneficial knowledge, and righteous good deeds. 6
