1 F I R S T U N I T E D M E T H O D I S T C H U R C H WORSHIP Service of Lessons & Anthems March 18, 2018 This service of Lessons and Anthems is an annual tradition. Through the Word and music, this service prepares us to enter into the events of Holy Week in deep prayer and reflection. May the Spirit of God quiet and open your heart, mind and soul, as together we consider God s great gift of Christ Jesus. *SILENT PROCESSIONAL Please stand as the choir and clergy process. *CALL TO WORSHIP David Bremer, Lay Lector Brother Christ, help us to follow you deep into the waters of baptism, to break the chain of past wrongs, to become fit to face your coming age. Jesus, our Brother, help us to follow you. Help us to follow you to the cross, the Tree of Life from which new life will blossom for each of us and for your whole creation. Jesus, our Brother, help us to follow you. Help us to follow you, to see our hope in your self-spending love and mercy, to die to all within us not born of your love. Jesus, our Brother, help us to follow you. *CHORALE The Chancel Choir/Dr. James Smith, Music Director from The St. Matthew Passion (J. S. Bach) What language shall I borrow to thank thee, dearest friend, for this thy dying sorrow, thy pity without end? O make me thine forever; and should I fainting be, Lord, let me never, never outlive my love to thee. CORPORATE PRAYER Rev. Robert English Almighty God, through love you have made us, and for love you call us to repentance. Grant that we who need to mend our sinful ways may find strength in your compassion and forgiveness. Restore to us the joy of your salvation; give us your Holy Spirit that we may serve you with willing hearts, bearing witness to your presence and abundant mercy in all the earth; through Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. SILENT PRAYER As a courtesy to others, please silence all cell phones/sound-making devices. Asterisks indicate standing if you are able.

2 THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. CHILDREN S MESSAGE Tricia Guerrero As we sing #2233 The Faith We Sing - Where Children Belong, children are invited to come forward for the Children s Message. He s Got the Whole World in His Hands (verse 1) He s got the whole world in His hands, He s got the whole world in His hands He s got the whole world in His hands, He s got the whole world in His hands. As the congregation sings, the children may go to Children s Church in the Chapel, and the Youth may go to Youth Connect. Fill us with the bounteous gifts of your love, that we may share in the joys of your kingdom, now and forever. Amen. The Agony of Gethsemane HYMN #292 UMH What Wondrous Love Is This (verses 1&2) FIRST LESSON Mark 14:32-38 (Pew Bible page 52, N.T.) The Chancel Choir William Martinez, Soloist ANTHEM from The Crucifixion (John Stainer) And they came to a place named Gethsemane; And Jesus saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray. Could ye not watch with me one brief hour? Could ye not pity my sorest need? Ah! if ye sleep while the tempests lower Surely, my friends, I am lone indeed. Jesu, Lord Jesu, bowed in bitter anguish And bearing all the evil we have done, Oh teach us how to love thee for thy love; Help us to pray, and watch, and mourn with thee. Could ye not watch with me one brief hour? Did ye not say upon Kedron s slope, Ye would not fall into the tempter s power? Did ye not murmur great words of hope? The Betrayal & Arrest SECOND LESSON Mark 14:43-50 (Pew Bible page 52, N.T.) Rev. Patricia Farris

3 CHORALE Ah, Holy Jesus (Johann Crüger) Ah, Holy Jesus, How hast thou offended, That man to judge thee hath in hate pretended? By foes derided, by thine own rejected, O most afflicted! Lo, the Good Shepherd for the sheep is offered; The slave hath sinned, and the Son hath suffered; For our atonement, while we nothing heedeth, God intercedeth. The Trial Before Religious Authorities THIRD LESSON Matthew 26:57-66 (Pew Bible page 31, N.T.) David Bremer ANTHEM from The Crucifixion (John Stainer) God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, That whoso believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world: But that the world through Him might be saved. The Denial of Peter FOURTH LESSON Mark 14:66-72 (Pew Bible page 53, N.T.) CHORALE from The St. John Passion (J. S. Bach) Peter, while his conscience slept, Thrice denied his Savior. When he woke, he bitter wept At his base behavior. Jesus, let not me forget; True devotion teach me; When on evil I am set, Through my conscience reach me. HYMN #301 UMH Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross (verses 1&2) The Trial Before Pontius Pilate & The Journey to Calvary FIFTH LESSON Mark 15:1-15 (Pew Bible page 53, N.T.) David Bremer ANTHEM Surely He Has Borne Our Grief (Mark Hayes) Surely, He has borne our grief and carried our sorrows. He was wounded for our transgressions. He was bruised for our iniquity. The punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray. Each of us has turned to his own way, and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. The Cross SIXTH LESSON Mark 15:16-20 (Pew Bible pages 53-54, N.T.) ANTHEM Thy Will Be Done (Craig Courtney) Our cup was filled with darkness. Our cup was filled with death. Christ took our cup and drank it, and gave us life, and gave us hope, gave us Himself. My Father, let this cup pass from me; yet not my will, O Lord, yet not my will, O Lord, but Thine be done. In blackest night we hear Him in dark Gethsemane. Pleading with the Father for one more way, for one more hope, for one more day. Then they took our Savior, and led Him to a tree; and there they broke His body, poured out His life, put Him to death to rise again. My Father, let this cup pass from me. Yet not my will, O Lord, yet not my will, O Lord, but thine be done, Thy will be done. SEVENTH LESSON Romans 6:1-11 (Pew Bible page 156, N.T.) Rev. Farris ANTHEM Agnus Dei from Requiem (Maurice Duruflé) O Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world, grant us eternal rest. *BENEDICTION *CHORAL RESPONSE O Lord, Thy Little Angel Send from The St. John Passion (J. S. Bach) O Lord, Thy little angel send When er my mortal life shall end, To bear my soul to Heaven! My body in its chamber sleep, All torment do thou distant keep, Till Thy last call be given! And then from death awaken me, That these poor eyes their Lord may see, See, Son of God, Thy glorious face, My savior and my fount of grace! Lord Jesus Christ, O hear Thou me, Thee will I praise eternally. POSTLUDE Prelude Suite, Opus 5 (Maurice Duruflé) Ty Woodward, Organist
