1 Hartville Mennonite Church 0 MIDWEEK JOURNAL Phone: Website: April 18, address: info@hartvillemennonite.org Volume 42, No. 16 The Jesus we don t talk about Recently I had the privilege of speaking with the 8 th grade boys at LCCS before their spring break as a part of their purity unit. As we looked at what it means to be a man we started with who Jesus was. It was not surprising to hear their feedback on what they thought of or who they thought Jesus was. Most of them responded like the picture seen above. Jesus was kind, loving, gentle, passive, soft and weak but strong on the cross. But is this who Jesus is? Is that really how Jesus acted when he was on earth? And if so how do we motivate ourselves to follow him? Is it possible for us to be all of the characteristics above but strong, feared, shrewd, imposing manly men. Here are some verses that contain the Jesus we don t talk about. This may help us view Jesus not as we would like to see him but as who he was.
2 John 2:1-11 (Jesus made wine.) Matthew 3:7, 23:27 & 23:33 (Jesus called people names) Matthew 23 (Jesus was irreverent & disrespectful to Pharisees, False Teachers. Matthew 17:17 (Jesus was impatient.) Luke 13:6-9 (Jesus was not forever long suffering.) Matthew 10:16 (Jesus taught his followers to be shrewd.) Matthew 5:30 & 18:8 (Jesus was gory.) Mark 9:31 (Jesus was harsh with his own disciples.) Mark 7:9 & 7:27-29 (Jesus was sarcastic.) Matthew 27:62-66 (Jesus broke Roman law.) Matthew 21:12-17 & John 2:13-22 (Jesus ran people out of the church.) Matthew 10 (Jesus brought division & conflict.) Luke 7:34 & Matthew 11:19 (Jesus ate and drank with sinners.) Now obviously there is context and mission that needs to surround all of these actions. If someone makes wine just to abuse it or if someone brings division and conflict just to destroy the church or even for their own agenda those things are sin. But the question is if someone tells someone else to be Christ-like then just what are they meaning? Do they mean like when Christ made a whip 2
3 and ran people out of the church or like the time he said let the little children come to me? Matthew 19:13-15 We need to seek to be just like Jesus was. We need to be so in tune with God, the Spirit and the Word of God that we do only what he (we) sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. John 5:20 (Parenthesis mine). We need to not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it. John 12:49 - That is the goal. just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. John 17: Harold Mansfield 3
