To order your Latin/English Missal, contact Baronius Press Ltd., Tel or visit Missals are $59.95 plus shipping and handling. Thank You! Thanks to the energetic and creative team of parishioners who organized and ran St. Patrick's involvement in the Winter Stroll and Craft Fair. Many people enjoyed seeing our beautiful church for the first time, and the constant flow of people through the Craft Fair was a great opportunity for new and old friends to mingle and have a grand time. Thanks also to our organist and choir who sang during the "open house" and to Sarah Hey, a freshman at Bishop Guertin High School, who played a selection of Advent hymns on violin. Small children in the bathrooms Now and then small children are seen heading for the bathroom area during Mass without a parent. For the sake of their safety, please do not permit children to go into that area alone. Frequently people enter the vestibule from the street during Mass. The closed doors between the vestibule and the church create a potentially dangerous situation. Thank you for cooperating! BAPTIZED IN CHRIST Michael Lenga SISTER ELIZABETH - A HEARTFELT THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU HAVE DONE! WE WILL MISS YOU! FAREWELL RECEPTIONS December 13 & 14 after all Masses in the Parish Center Father Kerper invites all parishioners and friends of Sr. Elizabeth to our parish Farewell Receptions. The receptions will be held after each Mass during the weekend of December 13 and 14 in the Parish Center. Light refreshments will be served. If there is anything special that you would like to do during one of the receptions to honor Sr. Elizabeth, or to help, please call Anamaree Redlinger at A box will be available for anyone who wishes to give Sr. Elizabeth a card. Sister cannot accept most gifts, so we are preparing a small album for her. If you have photos that you would like included in the album, please them to jpolaneczky@comcast.net. Gift for Sister Elizabeth In light of Sister Elizbeth's long service here, we have decided to give everyone an opportunity to express his or her thanks through a free will offering to Sister's community, the Missionary Sisters, Servants of the Word (HMSPs). If you would like to share in the parish's tribute to Sister, please put your offering in an envelope marked "Sister Elizabeth" and drop it in the collection basket. We will receive these envelopes through December 21, consolidate the offerings, and send them to Sister's Mother House in Mexico. We will also give her a list of donors (no amounts, no addresses) so that she and her community can continue to remember us in their prayers. Support for Retired Religious Sisters Every December, Catholics throughout the United States make offerings to support the thousands of retired sisters who did so much for the Church in past years. St. Patrick's has a special debt to the many Sisters of Mercy who taught at Sacred Heart School, as well as to the Sisters of St. Casimir and the domestic sisters from Canada who worked in the rectory for so long. In keeping with our practice of "passing the basket" only once at Mass, we will receive offerings for the retired religious only through envelopes. Envelope users will find a special envelope in their current packet. Those who choose not to use envelops can use one of the special envelopes available on the back tables. The people of St. Patrick Parish have always been among the most generous supporters of this effort.

A Note about Second Collections Through the year we are mandated to have over 20 second collections for various projects and groups, such as retired priests, seminarians, Catholic schools, and so forth. In most cases, we do not actually pass the basket a second time but invite people to use the envelopes designated for the specific collection. Envelope users automatically receive the special envelopes; and we normally have a supply of special envelopes for those who do not receive them. Most people have their own opinions about these various causes and groups, and so please use your own judgment about which causes you want to support. Thank you for whatever support you chose to offer. THE SOCIETY OF OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP & ST. PHILOMENA Do you desire to deepen your faith and devotion to Our Blessed Mother and prayerfully support St. Patrick s? 5 The Real St. Nicholas Over time, collective human memory can radically distort and even obliterate the reality of a fondly remembered person, especially famous ones. After a time, the mythical person completely replaces the real one. St. Nicholas of Myra, commonly known as Santa Claus, fell victim to this deadly process several centuries ago. As we celebrate his feast day on December 6, the true story of Nicholas deserves to be retrieved. Nicholas was born in what is now Turkey toward the end of the 3 rd century and died around 350. According to some people, his devout parents had considerable wealth. Even as a youngster Nicholas, being an only child, used the family assets to help poor and oppressed people. He eventually be-came a priest, and later was elected bishop of Myra, an impoverished and broken down diocese. The Santa Story as we have it today grew out of one particular event: the clandestine intervention by Nicholas on behalf of three endangered young women. According to an ancient report, Nicholas learned that a local nobleman of reduced circumstances had decided to involve his three daughters in an immoral occupation. The father came to this decision because he lacked the financial resources to provide his daughters with dowries. Marriage in that culture had a strong economic component. Hence, women without dowries could never marry. In some places, degrading occupations were the only available careers. Upon learning of their awful situation, Nicholas went to work. Somehow, he managed to assemble enough gold for three dowries. He placed the gold in three bags and on three successive nights secretly delivered the gold to the girls. The girls, who had no idea where the gold came from, were saved from a life of immorality. This story of the bishop s intervention on behalf of the three young women is the real root of the Santa Story. Sadly, the popular mythical version totally obscures the truly radical motives of Nicholas. His gifts were given to correct a terrible injustice, namely the degradation of three women whose plight arose from their father s poverty and the vulnerable position of young women. By relieving their economic poverty, Nicholas also restored their human dignity. As a committed Christian -- indeed a bishop! -- he was passionately concerned about preserving and enhancing the dignity of these oppressed and endangered human beings. Some, of course, will complain that Nicholas should have directly confronted the "patriarchal" structures of his society. Perhaps he should have. But all we know for sure is that this solitary deed of generosity drastically changed the lives of three endangered women. And here we see the rupture between the real Nicholas and the mythical Santa Claus. Contrary to popular belief, Nicholas was not happy little elf intent on delighting little children with magically produced presents. Rather the real Nicholas was a man whose deeds actively repaired the brokenness of his society and freed vulnerable people from terrible situations. The next time you see Santa, look beyond the surface of his traditional red suit and see a real man of faith whose deeds of mercy were always motivated by his love of Christ and his passionate desire for justice. St. Nicholas has many jobs today: He s the patron saint of children, sailors, pawnbrokers, Greece, Russia, and Sicily. St. Nicholas, pray for us! Fr. Michael Kerper
