5 The Church with two-way doors On September 30, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin of Dublin delivered a very enlightening and hopeful homily to his fellow bishops in Ireland. Unlike some who pretend that Ireland is still truly Catholic, Archbishop Martin courageously acknowledges the facts: very few people go to Mass, the "standard family" has become rare, almost no one wants the Church involved in Irish society, and no one listens to the bishops. What is to be done? Archbishop Martin proposed the image of a church with "two way doors." This means that people must enter through the doors "to encounter Jesus Christ as someone who can change their lives." Unfortunately this doesn't always happen. Instead people "encounter" sad, frightened, and unfriendly people who seem interested in fulfilling some residual legal obligation to worship God. If people do not truly encounter the living Christ within the church then there's really no reason to enter the church again. The exit door, according to Archbishop Martin, exists so that people can "go out enthusiastically into the realities of day to day living and into society, witnessing to the message of Jesus in their lives." In other words, there is no sense entering if those who worship take nothing with them as they exit. The Lord wants us to enter so that He can "re-enter" the world through believers. Does this frequently happen? Archbishop Martin reminded his fellow bishops that they can no longer expect people, including Catholics, to respond automatically to mandates and condemnations coming from the Church. Those days are long gone. Many people, including Catholics, do not ascribe any type of authority to the Church. So how does the Church propose her teaching? Through the actual lives of faithful Catholics who quietly and persistently live according to the demands of Christian faith. The archbishop put it this way: "The Christian message must win hearts and minds by its own integrity and by the quality of the lives of those who profess it." Of course, it's easy to go to church; but it's very difficult actually to live the Christian life. Because of this, some Catholics, according to the Archbishop Martin, opt for an easier alternative: to mount the barricades and "fight for the faith" against her enemies. He said this: "If fighting means calling down fire from heaven, then we are on the wrong track, not because we do have a right to defend ourselves and the Christian message vigorously. We are on the wrong track because when that happens it is more likely that we are invoking a fire which is not from heaven but one which is all too human, divisive, harsh, bitter, and self-serving. It can be the fire of insecurity in our personal faith." Pope Francis has made the same point on numerous occasions. They key to the "new evangelization" is the "doing" of Catholic faith, not "speaking" the Catholic faith. In a true sense, most of our problems are not external to us. Ireland, for example, was not suddenly invaded by hordes of anti-catholic forces spouting persuasive arguments against Catholicism. Not at all. The decay came from within, beginning with the lack of doors which allowed entrance to Christ and exit with Christ into the world. Fr. Michael Kerper
