Annual Seminarian Collection Through the remainder of January we will receive donations to the Annual Seminarian Collection. 5 Spiritual Alzheimer's On December 22, Pope Francis caused a stir by coining the term "Spiritual Alzheimer's," which means forgetfulness about one's original encounter with the living Christ. Speaking to the officials of the Roman Curia, the Holy Father defined this new disease as follows: "It consists in losing the memory of our personal 'salvation history, our past history with the Lord and our 'first love.'" Those afflicted with "Spiritual Alzheimer's" "are completely caught up in the present moment, in their passions, whims and obsessions... (they) build walls and routines around themselves, and thus become more and more the slaves of idols carved by their own hands." "Spiritual Alzheimer's" afflicts many Catholics because most of us are Catholics "by birth" not "by choice." As such, the "personal encounter with Christ" may have happened many generations ago in the foreign lands of our origins. With each passing generation the memory of the original encounter becomes more and more faint -- and, for many, simply unbelievable. We see the rapid onset of "Spiritual Alzheimer's" documented in a study called "Leaving Catholicism," published in The study found that 32% of "Catholics by birth" eventually sever their ties with the Church. This seems like a lot, and it is. But the drop out rate among other Christian groups is even higher. The study's most remarkable finding is that about 50% of the "drops outs" leave the Church before turning 18. And here's another amazing point: attending a Catholic school, religious education classes, or a youth group does very little to prevent disaffiliation upon turning 18. The problem here, of course, is the total lack of a memory of a true personal encounter with God. After all, you can't lose a memory you never had. And such a memory can't be manufactured. It takes time, openness, and contact with good people who have actually escaped "Spiritual Alzheimer's." Perhaps this isn't entirely new. Looking back to the "good old days," we must admit that we knew more about what we were against than what we were for. We knew, for sure, that we were not Protestants and not atheistic Communists. But did we have a memory of having ever met the Lord somewhere along the journey? The Holy Father's comment about "Spiritual Alzheimer's" has wide-ranging relevance for every Catholic precisely because one can go to Mass, contribute to the parish, perhaps even volunteer -- and have no memory of why these things are done. This leads to what Pope Francis called "existential schizophrenia" -- "the disease of those who lead a double life," especially through severe rebukes of others by those who do the same things themselves. What is one to do? We must acknowledge that "hereditary Catholicism" has ended. We will no longer automatically "reproduce" ourselves with baptism following the "ethnic blood line." Instead, we must follow the Holy Father's exhortation to return to our "first love," and, having rediscovered that moment, we must always remember it. As a parish, we must increasingly welcome those who trying to recover from "Spiritual Alzheimer's." Such people trickle into St. Patrick's all the time. Many are "youngish," eager to learn more about the faith, and searching for worship that goes far beyond the mere fulfillment of the legal obligation. How good to know that "Spiritual Alzheimer's" is curable! Fr. Michael Kerper
