Catholic Campaign for Human Development Special Collection November 22 & 23 There will be a second collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development this weekend. CCHD is the domestic anti-poverty program of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, offering support to organizations advocating for structural change to address the root causes of problems facing the poor and vulnerable here in America. 5 Parish updates and comments Honoring Sister Elizabeth Sister Elizabeth Castro, who came to our parish seven years ago, will be moving to the Cathedral Parish in Providence, Rhode Island on Monday, December 15. Before coming to us, Sister Elizabeth served at St. Aloysius Parish on West Hollis Street. She has spent a total of eleven years in Nashua, a long time for a religious sister. In light of Sister's long service here, we have decided to give everyone an opportunity to express his or her thanks through a free will offering to Sister's community, the Missionary Sisters, Servants of the Word (HMSPs). Sister, of course, has a vow of poverty, which makes it impossible for her to accept gifts. Moreover, the Sisters "travel light." Hence Sister and her community would benefit most from financial support. The HMSPs, unlike many religious communities today, is young, growing, and actively engaged in spreading God's Word. And they admirably live out their vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. If you would like to share in the parish's tribute to Sister, please use one of the special envelopes available in the vestibule and back tables. We will receive these envelopes through December 21, consolidate the offerings, and send them to Sister's Mother House in Mexico. We will also give her a list of donors (no amounts, no addresses) so that she and her community can continue to remember us in their prayers. Support for Retired Religious Sisters Every December, Catholics throughout the United States make offerings to support the thousands of retired sisters who did so much for the Church in past years. St. Patrick's has a special debt to the many Sisters of Mercy who taught at Sacred Heart School, as well as to the Sisters of St. Casimir and the domestic sisters from Canada who worked in the rectory for so long. In keeping with our practice of "passing the basket" only once at Mass, we will receive offerings for the retired religious only through envelopes. Envelope users will find a special envelope in their current packet. Those who choose not to use envelops can use one of the special envelopes available on the back tables. The people of St. Patrick Parish have always been among the most generous supporters of this effort. Communicating Every pastor occasionally receives anonymous letters. Long ago a seasoned old pastor gave me some blunt advice: "Don't read them because you can't respond." I've always followed his advice. If a letter comes to me with no return address I never open it. If someone places a letter in the collection basket or under the confessional door, I first look for a name. If there's no name, I immediately toss it.
