5 Why churches really close On Saturday, December 26, the op-ed page of The Wall Street Journal contained an article by Peggy Noonan entitled, "Cardinal Dolan, Spare This Church." Ms. Noonan, a brilliant woman who used to write speeches for President Reagan, reflected on the possible merger of her parish -- St. Thomas More -- with another parish a few blocks away. She asserted that her parish could be saved if Cardinal Dolan would just sell his residence. "Think of what the cardinal's residence would sell or rent for!" she wrote. "That would take care of everything." Whatever one may think about cardinals and bishops living in mansions, Ms. Noonan's quick fix would do next to nothing for her parish. Her proposal, frequently repeated by devout Catholics everywhere, misses a crucial point: our problems are not primarily financial but spiritual. If Cardinal Dolan sold his residence, which happens to be attached directly to St. Patrick's Cathedral, perhaps it would generate a hefty sum. (But, really, what super wealthy person would want to live there?) And if the Archdiocese spread the money around evenly each parish might get a nice grant. But, given current trends, the proceeds from the sale would be gone in a few years. What then? Ms. Noonan described her parish as "a jewel in Catholicism's crown" and recalled that at a recent pre-christmas "special Mass" the church was "standing room only." However, a quick review of the parish's bulletins tells a different story. On most weekends between October and December, average weekend attendance was only about 500 people. And St. Thomas More has two priests and five (!) weekend Masses. Hence, the average Mass has only 100 people. And this is on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, a heavily populated and very wealthy neighborhood. St. Thomas More's spiritual problem -- low Mass attendance -- generates its financial problems, not the other way around. The parish bulletin shows a deficit and the pastor noted that 20% of parishioners pay 80% of the expenses, which, by the way, is the same ratio here. Ms. Noonan's exclusive focus on financial solutions, which fits well with The Wall Street Journal, diverts her and other Catholics from facing the spiritual issues, especially our own frequency of worship, working and shopping on the Sabbath, and our attempts to practice what we preach. Of course, many Catholics welcome and imitate Ms. Noonan's diversion to the financial because it frees them from personal responsibility. It's so easy to say, "They closed my church and stole the money" rather than, "Gee, we stopped going to Mass and we and the kids sort of lost interest." Ms. Noonan's "sell the mansion and reallocate the funds" solution makes great sense for a chain of well-endowed museums, but not for the living Body of Christ. All the money in the world won't produce living faith, which is the only "capital reserve" of any Catholic parish. Fr. Michael Kerper
