1 CUMC Newsletter He is Risen! April 2018 Sermon Series April 1 Easter Good News or Bad News? April 8 Not an Electric Monk April 15 Chaotic Peace April 22 Hey, I know You! April 29 Entwined Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: There is, in life, a persistent, ongoing spiritual struggle. The experience of struggle doesn t mean that we re not where God wants us to be, but that we re not doing what God wants us to do. Life is a test. Lead me not into temptation, the bumper sticker reads, I know the way already. Christianity doesn t take us out of the world of struggle. Indeed, in life, a faithful life in following Jesus, we know that we live squarely in a world of struggle. We move now more deeply into the season of Lent. In Lent we remember that the Spirit, drove Jesus into the wilderness, to be tempted by the devil, and he s there for forty days. A Lenten spirituality helps us to come to terms with wilderness. A Lenten spirituality helps us to make our way through struggle. Henry Nouwen has called the desert of Israel the furnace of transformation. The rabbis of ancient Israel called the wilderness the school of the soul. In the wilderness we grow spiritually. Edwin Friedman, the family systems theorist, posed this question in a group once: What is your threshold for pain? Your answer to that question will teach me about your capacity for growth. The higher our capacity for pain, the greater our capacity for growth. When all is well we are easily seduced into thinking we have no need for God. In the wilderness we must place our trust in God. When we re in the midst of the wilderness we have a potential for growth. There s no spiritual growth without wilderness. There s no resurrection without death. There s no crown without a cross. There s no Easter without Lent. What does the season of Lent mean to you, spiritually? Can you think of victories and defeats that occur during these days? What does wilderness mean to you in light of your own struggles in life and ministry? A Lenten spirituality helps us make our way through the inevitable struggles that come. Lent is the journey into the wilderness. It is the journey of Jesus, toward the cross. It is a journey of struggle. But it is, we are promised, the way that leads to life. I pray that the latter days of Lent that moved through Holy Week and conclude with the celebration of the Resurrection, may be the furnace of your transformation, the school of your own soul, the experience of God s providence. See you in church! Pastor Chuck Christ is Risen! 1

Next Blood drive April 18, 2018 All children (ages 4-12) are invited to participate in Saturday Bible School on April 7, We will be learning about the Easter story, Jesus and God s love for us. 4 Member of the Month Congratulations to Roger Hoover for being the Member of the Month. Roger was born the second of three children, to Ned and Betty Hoover. After being raised with his brothers, Scott and Steve, it seemed only natural that he and his wife, Judy, should raise four sons of their own. Roger graduated from Meadowdale High School and attended both Wright State and Sinclair. After completing a four year apprenticeship, he was a sheet metal worker for 42 years before retiring in One of his claims-to-fame is that he is a published author. Roger wrote the manual on sheet metal estimating that is now used across the country. He also worked with many contractor groups around the country while offering foreman and leadership training to thousands of construction workers. Roger and Judy joined Community UMC in 1980, where they raised Andy, Doug, Tim, and Michael. At church, Roger was active in youth ministry and assisted with three workcamps. The first was a trip to Sumter, South Carolina to build a soup kitchen. The second was a trip to four corners New Mexico to work on a battered women's center on the Navajo reservation and the last was a trip to the Kentucky Mountain Housing project. Judy and the boys traveled to all of these sites and participated. Currently, Roger is a Lay Leader, and has been on SPRC, and enjoys playing bells. He is also a delegate to Annual Conference. Roger is proud that CUMC is in active contact with our Brookville Community (through our many outreaches, Trunk-or- Treat, Feed Brookville etc., and through the Community Preschool). Roger was "Mr. Judy" for many years. With his family, he was actively involved with their children and coached soccer, baseball and watched their games of football, basketball and soccer. Now that the children are grown, he is busier than ever attending the sporting events of their 10 grandchildren (Ryan, Garrett, Mackenzie, Seth, Mallory, Lucy, Arleigh, William, Alaina, and Ashlee). The grandchildren play baseball, football, hockey, soccer and cheerleading. Roger and Judy show their commitment to Brookville Schools in other ways too. Judy has served on the Brookville School Board for 32 years and Roger has served as the BHS boys basketball scorekeeper for over 25 years and has parked cars at the football games for many years as well. Roger is a longtime member of the Brookville Optimist Club and has served as president many times and Lt. Governor of the Ohio District. Roger enjoys camping and traveling in his off hours. Family camping is quite interesting with the Hoover Clan. The trip to the Holy Land with our group from Community was a life changing event. Roger s favorite Bible verse (Genesis 1:1) and favorite hymn create a well-developed footprint for life. In the beginning God It is well with my soul. 4

5 February 20, 2018 Dear Beloved in Christ Jesus: I have been humbled by the generosity you have extended over this past year to people affected by hurricanes throughout the United States. Today, I am inviting you to once again extend the light of Jesus love--to assist neighbors and communities in our own conference who are affected by rising rivers and the destructive force of flooding water. Over the weekend, many towns along the Ohio River experienced flooding. The situation is expected to extend to other river communities in Southern Ohio and Northwest Ohio as heavy rain continues throughout the week and over the weekend. Pomeroy, the west side of Marietta, Proctorville, Athalia and Chesapeake are some of the towns impacted thus far. Our conference and district disaster leaders along with local congregations have been engaged in offering hope, leadership and supplies. I am asking you to join me in supporting our disaster response in the following ways: 1. Pray for families and businesses affected by current flooding and those responding. 2. Give a financial gift to support our work within the conference. Make checks payable to West Ohio Conference In the memo line, write West Ohio Disaster Fund Mail to West Ohio Conference, 32 Wesley Blvd, Worthington OH At this time, we are asking for contributions to assist West Ohio s response directly instead of giving to UMCOR. 100% of your contribution will support disaster response within The West Ohio Conference. (Or, you can pick up an envelope from the credenza at church.) 3. Pray for communities bracing for flooding later this week and over the weekend. 4. Opportunities to respond will be communicated through Conference communication systems as they arrive. If you are interested in receiving updates, please contact Kris Shoaf at kshoaf@wocumc.org Thank you for allowing your light to shine so that our neighbors know they are not alone in the midst of heightened chaos and anxiety. 7 Leadership Team Report February 19, 2018 Present: Pastor Chuck, Doug Bowers, Peggy Gilbert, Mike Ferriell, Bob Miller, Roger Hoover, Karen Osswald, Bev Miller, Jill Bowers, Kathy Hubley, John Yancik, Sylvia Koeller The minutes of January 15, 2018 were read and approved with two corrections. John Wesleyan should be John Wesley and the date of the Valentine s Day lunch should be Feb. 11 not Feb 14, Finance: John Yancik, Bob Becker, Peggy Gilbert The difference between pledges and reaching 100% of the budget is $30,669. So, in order to meet 100% of the budget we will need to hold some fundraisers. However, this also does not cover any loose offerings which might offset the total in our favor. Discipleship: Karen Osswald There was a good turnout for new programs (John Wesley for the 21 st Century and 24 Hours That Changed the World) this week! This will be a good growth program. We are attempting to clean out some closets and would like to see things get put back each week into a now organized area. Children s Ministry: Kathy Hubley Fourteen children have come to the Saturday Bible School. The lessons for March will be about Palm Sunday, and the lessons for April will be about Easter. Children s Church: We need one more person to help so we meet Safe Sanctuary. And we also need someone to teach once a month when Kathy must work. SPRC: Mike Ferriell We Met! We discussed a way to get a credit card for the Secretary. (There are several programs that are used for the church office computers that require payment in credit card form. Sylvia has been using her personal card and getting reimbursed.) SPRC will try to meet monthly with each member of the staff to make sure things are going well. (Each staff member has been assigned to a SPRC committee member.) The March meeting will be cancelled. Preschool: Jill Bowers We have 70 children. We have had one family life event. One baby in February and the next baby is due in March. Hospitality: Bev Miller The Vinyl Party and Valentine s Day lunch went well. Our next event will be Movie Night at church on March 4, 2018, at 6:00, then Family Game Night on March 11, 2018 at 5:00 here at church, also. 7

8 Trustees: Bob Miller We now have a Security Committee in place. The nomination for the Security Committee needs to be adopted by the Leadership Team. Bob Miller made a motion that the Leadership Team adopt the Security Committee, their role, and their new activities. John Yancik seconded. The motion was passed. Recommendations from this committee: An announcement will be made Sunday (February 4, 2018) that all doors will be secured 10 minutes after the service begins, all except the front door. At some point in the future, the Brookville Police will be doing a walk through with the team. This will help the police to know our policy and give them an opportunity to give us any guidance or advise. We will be installing security cameras. We will be getting for 4 cameras and an NVR for about $1,650. Three cameras will be installed to cover doors and parking lot. The fourth camera will cover the sanctuary and be used to record the service. Carpet: One Estimate is in for $20,000. We will be getting 2 more bids. Communications: Roger Hoover, Bev Miller We are continuing to update the web page. We still need a few pictures. Governing Board: Doug Bowers Nominations for Governing board: There have been no nominations from the congregation. We could use 2 new members. Pastor Chuck Eagle: Thanks for all your support! In case I will be out of the pulpit, Jocelyn Roper said she will help and so will Wendy Deichman. Secretary: Sylvia Koeller Remember to get your newsletter information to the office on time. Sylvia gets calls requesting that the church advertise in athletic programs for the school. They always want an answer within that day, so there is no time to take it to the Leadership team. What does the Leadership team advise? Roger made a motion that we allow advertising in the Student Planners but not any athletic programs. Karen seconded the motion and it passed. (Student planners are used by the students all year long, while athletic programs are seen by very few people from Brookville.) Motion to adjourn Pastor Chuck, John Yancik seconded, motion passed. Roger closed in prayer. Next Meeting: March 19, 2018 Devotions for March: Roger Respectfully Submitted, Sylvia Koeller, Recording Secretary 8
