Emanuel Lutheran Church, Napoleon, Ohio bright.net Pastor James L. Castello yahoo.com cell phone Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost October 18, 2015 Empowered by the Holy Spirit, Emanuel s mission is to witness to the good news of salvation through Christ to individuals, the community and the world through discipleship and service. LBW Lutheran Book of Worship WOV With One Voice * Please stand as you are able * HYMN WOV # 748 Bind Us Together * GREETING P The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C And also with you. * KYRIE PRELUDE Harp selections (10:30) Evensong -Bell Choir ANNOUNCEMENTS nd (10:30) Presentation of Bibles to 2 graders * CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, whose name is majestic in all the earth, who rescues and heals in every time of trouble, who does all things well. C Amen. P Let us come before God, seeking forgiveness and life. Steadfast and saving God, C have mercy on us. We confess to you all the ways we turn from you and harm one another. In your compassion, forgive our sins and heal our hurts. Bring forth from us a harvest of righteousness, the fruits of gentleness and peacemaking, the sheaves of wisdom and justice; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. P In the name of Jesus, the Son of God, receive mercy and find grace in your time of need. Your transgressions are forgiven; God s love is healing balm for your wounds. Rejoice, for God raises you up to new life in Christ. C Amen. 1 2
* HYMN OF PRAISE * PRAYER OF THE DAY P Almighty and everlasting God, in Christ you have revealed your glory among the nations. Preserve the works of your mercy, that your Church throughout the world may persevere with steadfast faith in the confession of your name; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. C Amen. (10:30) Special Music: Build Your Kingdom Here -Living Spirit (words on page 7) * SALUTATION AND RESPONSE FIRST LESSON: Isaiah 53: Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases; yet we accounted him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have all turned to our own way, and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. 8 By a perversion of justice he was taken away. Who could have imagined his future? For he was cut off from the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people. 9 They made his grave with the wicked and his tomb with the rich, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush him with pain. When you make his life an offering for sin, he shall see his offspring, and shall prolong his days; through him the will of the LORD shall prosper. 11 Out of his anguish he shall see light; he shall find satisfaction through his knowledge. The righteous one, my servant, shall make many righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will allot him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he poured out himself to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. A The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. 3 4
PSALM 91 Living Spirit will sing this through once, congregation will sing the second time. Living Spirit will sing 5 verses, followed by this refrain sung by the congregation after each verse. prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because 8 of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through 9 what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal 10 salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. A The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. * GOSPEL: Mark 10:35-45 SECOND LESSON: Hebrews 5: Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and 2 sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he 3 himself is subject to weakness; and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the 4 people. And one does not presume to take this honor, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was. 5 So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, You are my Son, today I have begotten you ; 6 as he says also in another place, You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek. 7 In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up 35 James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, Teacher, we want you to do for us 36 whatever we ask of you. And he said to them, What is it you want me to do for 37 you? And they said to him, Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your 38 left, in your glory. But Jesus said to them, You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that 39 I am baptized with? They replied, We are able. Then Jesus said to them, The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you 40 will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared. 41 When the ten heard this, they began to 42 be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. 5 6
43 But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must 44 be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many. Build your kingdom here. Let the darkness fear. Show your mighty hand. Heal our streets and land. Set your church on fire. Win this nation back. Change the atmosphere. Build your kingdom here, we pray! CHILDREN S SERMON HYMN WOV # 779 SERMON On Eagle s Wings * HYMN WOV # 765 Jesu, Jesu * APOSTLES' CREED C I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. TITHES AND OFFERINGS (8:00) Build Your Kingdom Here -Living Spirit Come, set your rule and reign in our hearts again. Increase in us we pray. Unveil why we re made. Come, set our hearts ablaze with hope, like wildfire in our very souls; Holy Spirit, come, invade us now. We are your church, we need your power in us. We seek your kingdom first. We hunger and we thirst; Refuse to waste our lives, for you re our joy and prize. To see the captive hearts released; the hurt, the sick, the poor at peace. We lay down our lives for heaven s cause. We are your church; we pray, revive this earth. 7 Unleash your kingdoms power, reaching the near and far. No force of hell can stop your beauty, changing hearts. You made us for much more than this; awake the kingdom seed in us. Fill us with the strength and love of Christ. We are your church, we are the hope on earth. (Refrain) (10:30) Heraldic Flourish -Bell Choir OFFERTORY (please remain seated) THE PRAYERS (please remain seated) A Made alive with God in Christ, we pray for the church, those in need, and all of God s creation. A brief silence. A Holy One who comes to serve your people, transform us into servants and make us instruments of your will, so that your justice and peace may be accomplished. Lord, in your mercy, 8
A Preserve the whole creation so that animals, plants, and land flourish. Protect endangered species and renew polluted waterways. Lord, in your mercy, A Accompany physicians, researchers, fundraisers, and relief workers who seek to eradicate preventable diseases, such as malaria. Bring forth fruit from their cooperative efforts. Lord, in your mercy, A Inspire the work and words of artists, authors, preachers, and teachers in the church. Use their gifts to proclaim your goodness to those who long to hear. Lord, in your mercy, A We remember saints led by your Spirit. Give us Christ s Spirit of obedience, while you continue the work of making all things new. Lord, in your mercy, Other petitions. P Ease the many burdens resulting from illness and mend the brokenness caused by sin. Be with those who suffer and make your people whole. (Especially we pray for...) Lord, in your mercy, P Gather these concerns and all who are in need into your abundant care, O God, remembering your promise of mercy, through Christ our Lord. C Amen * LORD S PRAYER P Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray: C Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen * BENEDICTION * HYMN WOV # 781 My Life Flows On POSTLUDE Shout to the North 9 From Sundays and Seasons.com.
