Hymn old hundredth Text: Isaac Watts, 1719, Thomas Ken, 1709; Tune: L. Bourgeois, 1551 Holy Eucharist Prelude Thy rebuke hath broken His heart: He is full of heaviness. He looked for some to have pity on Him, but there was no man, neither found He any to comfort Him. George Frideric Handel Behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto His sorrow. Psalm 69:20, Lamentations 1:12 He was cut off out of the land of the living: Collect of the Day Presider The Lord be with you. for the transgressions of Thy people was He stricken. People And also with you. But Thou didst not leave His soul in hell; Presider Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, in Christ you have nor didst Thou suffer Thy Holy One to see corruption. revealed your glory among the nations: Preserve the works Isaiah 53:8, Psalm 16:10 of your mercy, that your Church throughout the world may Please stand. The Presider welcomes the People and then says persevere with steadfast faith in the confession of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you Presider Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. People And blessed be God s kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. People Amen. ALL Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, Please be seated and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may The Lessons perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; First Lesson Isaiah 53:4-12 through Christ our Lord. Amen. Reader A reading from the Book of Isaiah. Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases; yet we accounted him 1 2

stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have all turned to our own way, and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. By a perversion of justice he was taken away. Who could have imagined his future? For he was cut off from the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people. They made his grave with the wicked and his tomb with the rich, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him with pain. When you make his life an offering for sin, he shall see his offspring, and shall prolong his days; through him the will of the Lord shall prosper. Out of his anguish he shall see light; he shall find satisfaction through his knowledge. The righteous one, my servant, shall make many righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore I will allot him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he poured out himself to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Silence is kept for a space Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. People Thanks be to God. Psalm 91 Michael Joncas The Cantor sings the verses; all join for the refrain Cantor You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord, who abide in his shadow for life, say to the Lord: My refuge, my Rock in whom I trust! ALL Cantor The snare of the fowler will never capture you, and famine will bring you no fear: under his wings your refuge, his faithfulness your shield Refrain Cantor You need not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that fl ies by day; though thousands fall about you, near you it shall not come. Refrain Cantor For to his angels he s given a command to guard you in all of your ways; upon their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone. Refrain Second Lesson Hebrews 5:1-10 Reader A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews: Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not presume to take this honor, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, You are my Son, today I have begotten you ; as he says also in another place, You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek. In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered 3 4

Reader People up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Athough he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. Silence is kept for a space Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God. Please stand for the Gospel procession and sing Gospel Acclamation Tone I Cantor Whoever would be great among you must be your servant; * even as the Song of Man came not to be served, but to serve. repeat Alleluia Gospel Lesson Mark 10:35-45 Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Deacon James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to [Jesus] and said to him, Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you. And he said to them, What is it you want me to do for you? And they said to him, Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory. But Jesus said to them, You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They replied, We are able. Then Jesus said to them, The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared. When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many. Silence is kept for a space Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. Sermon Please stand Nicene Creed ALL We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 5 6

Prayers of the People Book of Common Prayer, Form IV After each petition, the Leader says Leader Lord, in your mercy People Hear our prayer. After the final petition, the Presider says Presider Hasten, O Father, the coming of your kingdom; and grant that we your servants, who now live by faith, may with joy behold your Son at his coming in glorious majesty; even Jesus Christ, our only Mediator and Advocate. People Amen. Confession of Sin Deacon Since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. After a period of silence and reflection, all say together ALL Almighty God, long-suffering and of great goodness: I confess to you, I confess with my whole heart my neglect and forgetfulness of your commandments, my wrong doing, thinking, and speaking; the hurts I have done to others, and the good I have left undone. O God, forgive me, for I have sinned against you; and raise me to newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Presider Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. People Amen. The Peace Presider The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you. Please greet one another in the name of the Lord Announcements The Holy Communion The Presider begins the Offertory with a sentence from scripture. Anthem Felix Mendelssohn He, watching over Israel, slumbers not nor sleeps. Shouldst thou, walking in grief, languish, he will quicken thee. Psalm 121:4; 138:7 As the gifts are presented, please say together ALL Blessed are you, God of all creation; Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory And for the service of your kingdom. Blessed be God for ever. Amen. The Great Thanksgiving Common Worship Presider The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Presider Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give God thanks and praise. Presider Father, you made the world and love your creation. You gave your Son Jesus Christ to be our Savior. His dying and rising have set us free from sin and death. And so we gladly thank you, with saints and angels praising you, and saying: Sanctus land of rest ALL Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Presider We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and, taking bread, he praised you. He broke the bread, gave 7 8

it to them and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did, in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross. Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory. ALL Presider Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day when your kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth. Look with favor on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with the Blessed Virgin Mary, blessed Paul our patron, and all the saints to feast at your table in heaven. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory are yours, O loving Father, for ever and ever. ALL Deacon And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, ALL Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Breaking the Bread Invitation Presider This is the table of the Lord. It is made ready for those who love and those who want to love more. So, come, you who have much faith and you who have little, you who have been here often and you have not been here long, you who have tried to follow and you who have fallen short. Come, because it is the Risen Christ who invites you. It is the Risen Christ who meets you here. The Table of our celebration is our Lord s, therefore all people are welcome to come forward to receive God s blessing at the administration of Communion, regardless of age, denomination, or conscience. Please receive God s blessing in the manner of your tradition and comfort, either extending both hands to receive the bread and wine or crossing both arms upon your chest to receive a prayer of blessing. Should you desire a gluten-free wafer, please extend one hand, crossing the other upon your chest. Minister The Body of Christ, the bread of heaven. Recipient Amen. Minister The Blood of Christ, the cup of salvation. Recipient Amen. Anthem Richard Sheppard And didst thou travel light, dear Lord, Was thine so smooth a road, That thou upon thy shoulders broad Could hoist our heavy load? 9 10

Too frail each other s woes to bear Without thy help are we; Can we each other s burdens share, If we not burden thee? O wonder of the world withstood! That night of prayer and doom Was not the sunset red as blood, The dawn pale as a tomb? In agony and bloody sweat, In tears of love unfeigned, O undespairing Lord, and yet, With man identified. As in dark drops the pitting rain Falls on a dusty street, So tears shall fall and fall again To wash thy wounded feet. But thy quick hands to heal are strong. O love thy children we, Who sing with joy the Pilgrim s song And walk dear Lord with thee. Geoffrey Dearmer After Communion Please stand as the Presider says Presider Let us pray. ALL Gracious Father, we give you praise and thanks for this Holy Communion of the Body and Blood of your beloved Son Jesus Christ, the pledge of our redemption; and we pray that it may bring us forgiveness of our sins, strength in our weakness, and everlasting salvation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Hymn lasst uns erfreuen Tune: Cologne Gesangbuch, 1623; Text: Anonymous Blessing & Dismissal The Presider blesses the people and all respond People Amen. Deacon Let us go forth into the world, rejoicing in the power of the Spirit. People Thanks be to God
