1 Emanuel Lutheran Church, Napoleon, Ohio bright.net Pastor James L. Castello yahoo.com cell phone Second Sunday in Lent March, 07 LBW Lutheran Book of Worship WOV With One Voice * Please stand as you are able (Please see page 7 for the 0:0 service.) ANNOUNCEMENTS Ringing of the Bell PRELUDE Come, Holy Traveler 8:00 a.m. Service CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS (you may remain seated) P In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. P God of heaven and earth, you come in close and make us yours. Equip us by your Spirit to confess our sin, embrace your forgiveness, and seek the way you set before us in your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. P With honesty of heart, let us confess our sin. Merciful God, forgive us. Our will is handcuffed to sin, and we cannot break free. We have spoken when we should have kept quiet. P We were silent when we should have said something. P We acted when we knew better. P We were still when we know we should have moved. P For the wrong we have done, for the good we have failed to do, have mercy on us, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. P People of God, look to the Son, given to heal you and set you free because God loved the world so much. Take hold of the life that Jesus offers! HYMN LBW # 77 Lift High the Cross GREETING P The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY P O God, our leader and guide, in the waters of baptism you bring us to new birth to live as your children. Strengthen our faith in your promises, that by your Spirit we may lift up your life to all the world through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. FIRST LESSON: Genesis :-a The LORD said to Abram, "Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and the one who PSALM I lift up my eyes to the hills; from where is my help to come? My help comes from the LORD, the maker of heav- en and earth. curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed." So Abram went, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. A C The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God.
2 The LORD will not let your foot be moved nor will the one who watches over you fall asleep. Behold, the keep- er of Israel will neither slum- ber nor sleep; the LORD watches over you; the LORD is your shade at your right hand; 6 the sun will not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. 7 The LORD will preserve you from all evil and will keep your life. 8 The LORD will watch over your going out and your coming in, from this time forth for- evermore. * GOSPEL: John :-7 (please stand as you are able) SECOND LESSON: Romans :-, -7 What are we to say was gained by Abraham, our ancestor according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness." Now to one who works, wages are not reckoned as a gift but as something due. But to one who without works trusts him who justifies the ungodly, such faith is reckoned as righteousness. For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation. 6 For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the 7 father of all of us, as it is written, "I have made you the father of many nations") in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. A C The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God. Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God." Jesus answered him, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above." Nicodemus said to him, "How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother's womb and be born?" Jesus answered, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of 6 water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is 7 spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to 8 you, 'You must be born from above.' The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit." 9 Nicodemus said to him, "How can these 0 things be?" Jesus answered him, "Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who
3 descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him 6 may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not 7 perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him." CHILDREN S SERMON HYMN LBW # 79 My Faith Looks Up to Thee SERMON HYMN LBW # 06 Take My Life (you may remain seated) * APOSTLES' CREED C I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen TITHES AND OFFERINGS OFFERTORY (you may remain seated.) O Worship the King -Emanubells THE PRAYERS (you may remain seated) A Lifting our voices and turning toward God, let us pray for the church, the earth, and all who are in need. A brief silence. A God of Abraham and Sarah, God of all earth's families, bless your church to be a blessing and bestow your grace to a hurting world. Hear us, O God. A O God, you love the entire cosmos. Help us to love all of the creatures and life within it. Hear us, O God. A O God, our help is in you. Keep the nations, their governments, and their people from all evil. Hear us, O God. A O God, lead this assembly in its Lenten journey toward faith, works of love, and prayer. Let those gathered here be fed and nourished by your word. Hear us, O God. A O God, we give thanks for the faithful departed who have joined your saints in light. Let their lives be guides to our own. Hear us, O God. Here other intercessions may be offered. 6

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.
