2 Welcome to St. David's Lutheran Church! We are blessed by your presence and honored that you have chosen to worship with us today. Please take a moment to sign the friendship sheet that is located in the booklet at the end of each pew, near the center aisle. These sheets will be collected with the offering. The Sacrament of Holy Communion is offered to all who are baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit and who recognize the Sacrament as the true body and blood of our Lord. Baptized children are also welcome to the Lord s table at St. David s with the guidance and consent of their parents or guardians. Prayer Requests may be made by placing the request in the small wooden box at the rear, near the doors through which you entered. The acolyte will collect the requests and they will be included during the prayers of the congregation. For your comfort there is a restroom, equipped with a changing table and supplies and a water fountain located upstairs. Simply exit through the double doors back into the narthex. The restroom is straight ahead in the parlor, beside the grandfather clock, and the water fountain is to the right at the beginning of the hallway. Devotional The worship folder you are holding is also a weekly devotional booklet. The prayers and Scripture readings are appropriate for use at any time during the week. The liturgy itself is a Scripturally based order for daily prayer and devotion with Scriptural references noted where they apply. Even the hymns are appropriate tools for prayer and praise. Finally, there is a daily lectionary of Scripture readings for the rest of the week on the last printed page. INTRODUCTION Today s gospel starts with disciples obsessing over who s number one, which leads Jesus to say something about God's take on importance and power. Here Jesus makes it explicit that the reversal of values in God s community is a direct challenge to the values of the dominant culture, where wielding power over others is what makes you great. When we pray your kingdom come we are praying for an end to tyranny and oppression. We pray this gathered around the cross, a sign of great shame transformed to be the sign of great honor and service.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Kneel/Sit Silence for reflection and self-examination. Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. 6 FIRST READING: Isaiah 53:4-12 A reading from Isaiah the 53 rd chapter. {This reading is from the last of four passages in Isaiah that are often called servant songs. Christians are probably most familiar with this servant song. In light of Christian faith, the servant s healing ministry and redemptive suffering are understood to be fulfilled in the life and death of Christ.} 4Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases; yet we accounted him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. 5But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed. 6All we like sheep have gone astray; we have all turned to our own way, and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. 8By a perversion of justice he was taken away. Who could have imagined his future? For he was cut off from the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people. 9They made his grave with the wicked and his tomb with the rich, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. 10Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush him with pain. 8 SECOND READING: Hebrews 5:1-10 A reading from Hebrews the 5 th chapter. {Using imagery from scripture and from Jewish worship practices, Jesus is presented as the great high priest who was obedient to God s saving plan. Through his suffering and death he has become the source of eternal salvation.} 1Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; 3 and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. 4 And one does not presume to take this honor, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was. 5 So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, You are my Son, today I have begotten you ; 6as he says also in another place, You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek. 7In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. 8 Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; 9 and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, 10 having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. Jesus responds by announcing that he and his followers will rule through self-giving service.} 35James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you. 36 And he said to them, What is it you want me to do for you? 37 And they said to him, Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory. 38 But Jesus said to them, You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? 39They replied, We are able. Then Jesus said to them, The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared. 41When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. 42 So Jesus called them and said to them, You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. 43 But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many. 12 Together we confess our faith: APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Longing for God s will to be fulfilled among us, we pray persistently for the church, the world, and all people in need. A brief silence. Holy One, open lines of communication within your church, enabling us to listen to each person s voice and to lift up each person s unique gifts for your sake. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Fill creation from mountain peaks to the deepest valleys with your invigorating Spirit. Give strength and provision to animals that prepare for colder weather. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Grant your Spirit of humility to those who hold authority. Direct political leaders to live in service to their citizens, and turn our eyes and our hearts toward our neighbors. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

13 Guard and protect the ones who call to you out of despair, illness, or injury (especially). Deliver them from their struggles into havens where they can find healing and faithful companionship. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Bear the pain of people who are denied justice, especially when it results in violence or death. Bring your peaceful rule into the world for the sake of those who are oppressed. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Here other intercessions may be offered. Prepare a seat for all the saints in your holy realm. Bring us all into a righteous reality where honor is given to the lowly and where we all share in the life that you give. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Enfold all things in your compassion, O God, and bring us into your life through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. 16 OFFERING PRAYER Merciful God, you open wide your hand and satisfy the need of every living thing. You have set this feast before us. Open our hands to receive it. Open our hearts to embrace it. Open our lives to live it. We pray this through Christ our Lord. Amen. GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. PREFACE It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks and praise to you, O Lord, holy Father, through Christ our Lord; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with the Church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

17 HOLY, HOLY, HOLY EUCHARISTIC PRAYER All glory to you, Almighty God, heavenly Father: out of Your great love for us You gave Your only Son Jesus, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. It was your Son Jesus who freely surrendered Himself to suffer death on the cross for us and for our salvation. There, on that cross, He willingly offered Himself up as a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world.

18 By that gift of love and grace we are your people, born of water and word, served, fed, and forgiven at your Holy Table and called together by Your Holy Spirit. Therefore we offer ourselves as disciples who follow as witnesses to the world and as living memory of His gift of grace. Pour out your Holy Spirit on these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be for us the body and blood of your Son our Lord. On the night in which He was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to His disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

19 With this bread and cup we remember our Lord's passover from death to life as we proclaim the mystery of faith: Send your Holy Spirit upon us: as grains scattered on the hillside become one bread, so let your Church be gathered from the ends of the earth, that all may be fed with the Bread of life, your Son our Lord. Through him all glory and honor is yours, Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy Church, both now and forever. Amen. LORD S PRAYER Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Baptized children are also welcome to the Lord s table at St. David s with the guidance and consent of their parents or guardians. This morning we Commune by intinction. The congregation will proceed down the center aisle and receive the host from the pastor. Then, those seated on the right will go right and those seated on the left will go left, receive the chalice from one of the Communion assistants by dipping the host into the chalice. 22 After all have returned to their places, the minister may say these or similar words. The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace. Amen. POST-COMMUNION PRAYER Let us pray. Jesus Christ, host of this meal, you have given us not only this bread and cup, but your very self, that we may feast on your great love. Filled again by these signs of your grace, may we hunger for your reign of justice, may we thirst for your way of peace, for you are Lord forevermore. Amen. Silence for reflection. 24 GOSPEL MESSAGE Choosing to Serve In the moments before today s gospel reading continues the narrative, Jesus has just told his disciples, for the third time and in some detail, that he will be handed over to the religious leaders and the Roman authorities, and that he will be put to death (Mark 10:32-34). Shortly thereafter, James and John decided it was the perfect time to ask Jesus for a reward. Did Jesus sigh when he saw them approach, wondering what these Sons of Thunder were up to now? In response to their bold request he doesn t tell them no, but instead asks something of them. Do they really believe they can follow him on the path he has chosen, to live and die like him? The brothers were confident they could. As astounding as their response may sound to us, are we really any different? Just as small children asserting their autonomy insist, Lemme do it! I can do it, how often do we too take an I-cando-it-all-without-your-help approach to our lives? God shows us that we absolutely cannot do everything on our own. Yet God does not just step in and take over. God fully respects our free will, regardless of how wise or unwise our choices might be. Jesus shows the disciples that his way, God s way, doesn t look like other ways. As followers of Jesus our work is not to seek positions of power and prestige. God is above everything and everyone. Instead, the greatest ones are those who serve. Being a servant, putting others first, is how someone becomes great. Jesus came to serve, not to be served. Jesus demonstrates the way of Christian living and honors us with the hope that we will follow his example. That we too will choose to serve rather than be served, and in doing so, glorify God.
