2 Rural Dean s Letter A Blessed and Happy New Year In the extracts which follow from the Vicar s Letter for January in the Spilsby magazine 140 years ago he is satisfied with the ordinary congregation! I am more than satisfied, I am truly blessed with so much work, prayer and love. However, Fr Layng was I think talking about numbers in that the bulk of the letter which we have not produced is giving numbers of baptisms, weddings and funerals etc. My Dear Parishioners, We have rapidly passed by another milestone in the journey of life, and by the commencement of another year, I am reminded, that in accordance with my usual custom, I have again the pleasure of wishing all a happy and prosperous new year, and of making a few observations on what has taken place during the past twelve months. There were 23 celebrations of the Holy Communion, and 218 services, at which sermons were preached at 166. I notice, with thankfulness, that the number of communicants still gradually continues to increase, the average number at the mid-day monthly celebrations being 45 as compared with 40 last year. The greatest number was 70, on Easter Day. The ordinary congregations are satisfactory, but I should be glad to see more in the morning: the evening congregation is usually very large and is a source of much thankfulness, more seats and better accommodation being greatly needed. I consider that our congregation is especially a devotional one, people seem as if they came to the public services of the Church for the purposes of Prayer and Praise, but I will take this opportunity of saying that I wish the congregation would make the responses somewhat louder than they do. In olden times a Parish Clerk was supposed to read the responses for the people, because so few were able to read for themselves, but of course, in these days, this reason does not apply. Personally speaking I much prefer to hear the responses audibly read by the people to having them intoned or sung by the choir, but if they are not read sufficiently lour for all to hear, it is then better that they should be intoned or sung. I hope we may improve in this respect. The services on Wednesday evenings are generally well attended, better on the whole than are those during the seasons of Advent and Lent. 2
3 In 2017 we have the task of continuing to take part in God s mission and although at present we may not need too much more seating in Church we do need to Invite more, welcome more and serve more. 6 Light Shining Out of Darkness God moves in a mysterious way, His wonders to perform; He plants his footsteps in the sea, And rides upon the storm. Deep in unfathomable mines Of never-failing skill, He treasures up his bright designs, And works his sov reign will. Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take, The clouds ye so much dread Are big with mercy, and shall break In blessings on your head. Judge not the Lord by feeble sense, But trust him for his grace; Behind a frowning providence He hides a smiling face. His purposes will ripen fast, Unfolding ev ry hour; The bud may have a bitter taste, But sweet will be the flow r. Blind unbelief is sure to err, And scan his work in vain; God is his own interpreter, And he will make it plain. William Cowper ( ) New Leake News This year I had my first experience of a Christingle service; I found it charmingly engaging. Rev. Fran explained the meaning of the decorated orange and candle whilst encircling our congregation of 12 with a very, very long red ribbon. Our candles were lit and St. Jude's felt a truly magical place. Two days later three of us drove perilously through thick fog to meet for our first Advent session this year. We listened to some calming Celtic music as we first prepared the church for the New Leake school children to visit the next day. Each year they decorate our eight Christmas trees prior to their carol service, amidst much laughter and enjoyment by all those present. Once settled, our discussions around hope found us thinking about our village community and feelings of loss as shops, pubs and post office have closed over recent years. It is, of course, a problem for many rural areas nowadays and isolation becomes inevitable as the elderly become housebound. Sadly, we had few solutions in our hope talks but agreed there is great benefit in visiting individuals to offer encouragement and practical support. We also considered thoughtful prayer whilst asking our Lord for guidance as an essential beginning. As the saying goes from little acorns grow big oak trees. As Christians we can all share in the hope of the new life which Jesus promised us. Hope helps people survive the hardships of life. Together, we can help ourselves and others to draw closer to God and each other. I.G. 6
7 Family Service The Family Service on December 4 th was entitled Holy Days and Holidays and was led by Jane Parker. The children were given various activities to do during the service but joined in with hymns and prayers at the beginning and end of the service. Reverend Joan Thornett talked about her Holiday in Greece when one of the days became a Holy Day as the people were celebrating the feast of St Basil, placing flowers at a shrine and singing hymns. The atmosphere changed from a Holiday atmosphere to a Holy atmosphere and showed that everyday can have a moment of being a Holy Day. Jane Parker and Margaret Cook looked at different words with the children such as bough and bow and though and cough and dough and rough (read these aloud and see the differences) and how the word Holy Day and Holiday are similar with just one letter change. The children were looking forward to that special Holy Holiday on December 25 th. Father Peter joined the congregation at the end of the service to dedicate a votive candle stand in remembrance of David James, Lay Reader, who had been a great supporter of the Family Service. David's wife and daughter and four of his grandchildren were at the service. Josh, Rachel and Matthew, David's grandchildren, had acted as crucifer and acolytes at the start of the service. 7
8 The next Family service will be on New Year's Day, January 1 st when the theme will be The Journey of Life. The organ, which has been renovated, will be played for the first time during a service since September. Grateful thanks goes to Chris Hind of Aistrup and Hind, and his work force, for all their hard work in bringing the organ back to its former glory. St James church welcomed Spilsby Primary Academy and parents into church for their Carol Service. Fr Terry Steele and Headteacher Mr Clarke led the service which included some fantastic performances by each class. Even Archie, the dog, was impressed! 8
9 Hareby Advent Service On December 3 rd a group of us from all over the Deanery gathered to celebrate the season of advent at the little church at Hareby. These tiny churches on an almost domestic scale nurture their congregations. We were reminded that for thousands of years people have gathered by the hearth for comfort and sustenance, so we gather at the altar. These little places of worship embody the Church as Mother. They speak to us of hearth and home, of loving kindness, of family. In the Bolingbroke Deanery we were blessed with a number of these tiny churches. We must not see them as a burden nor must we forget them, for their message is needed more than ever. Do go out and experience them, here are a few: New Leake with its pretty Chancel screen and interior wood cladding. It s warm friendly atmosphere that feels like visiting a much loved family friend. Elegant Georgian Ulceby nestled amongst the trees. Dalby with its lively Victorian brick work and surprising connection to Australia. Saxo-Norman Lusby, a fascinating little church that stands witness to a thousand years of prayer. Let s use them in imaginative ways and contact the Deanery Office to talk over your ideas. Our tiny churches are waiting for you 9
10 Rev d Fran s Words of Wisdom What are your hopes and dreams for the year ahead? In many ways 2016 was a time of turmoil and at times it was difficult to feel confident of the future. But now we are ready to begin again. This is certainly a different world from the one in which we grew up, but different does not necessarily mean more difficult or more dangerous. Sometimes we need to take off our rose-tinted spectacles and look as the world (and history) through God s eyes. We have just celebrated Christmas, and in the Advent preparation season, we acknowledge that the Christ Child comes to earth bringing Hope, Peace, Joy and Love. These are both gifts from God to us, and fruits of the lives we live with him and they don t stop on Christmas Day! As we enter a new Calendar year let us look at the year ahead with Christian hope and let us be that hope to others around us. Let us pray for Christ s peace to bring solutions to conflict situations and let us be the outworking of that peace where we can. Let us celebrate all the good things that God has done, and is doing, in the world around us and let us communicate that joy to others. And let us love our neighbours as Christ loves them and ourselves too. Last year I wrote about how I choose a motto for each coming year and seek to live it and learn from it stars with uncertainty on a global stage the Presidential Inauguration and the ongoing Brexit negotiations mean that the way ahead is not clear. Conflict situations are escalating abroad and industrial action at home create a spirit of disunity. Last month I led some worship for the Discipleship Team meeting based on the words of Jeremiah 29:11. For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. This is a promise fit for the start of a new year. Let s see where they take us! Raithby Village Hall Tuesday Coffee Morning 3 rd January am 12noon 10
11 PLOUGH SUNDAY Deanery Service 8 th January 2017 St Andrew s, Halton Holegate 10.00am Second Sunday at 6 Little Steeping Village Hall Sunday 8 th January Partney The 67 th Annual Partney Christmas Fair was held on Saturday 3 rd December in the Victory Hall. Mr John Hudson welcomed the visitors and thanked all the helpers for all their hard work in preparing for the Fair. He paid tribute to all the customers who had turned out on such a busy fund raising day when similar events were taking place all over the district. He was assisted by all the children who did a count down and declared the Fair open. It was very good to see some new blood joining the team of volunteer helpers. Thanks to all the Mums for bringing the children along in what is a very busy time of year. Thanks also to Father Christmas who not only made time to call in during the afternoon, but he also stayed on for some time in his Grotto finding gifts for the children and receiving instructions for Christmas Day! His visit was much appreciated by everyone. The Tills were ringing at top speed and an excellent sum of 1255 was raised in two hours which equates to just over 10 per minute, just slightly up on last year. Mr Hudson summed up at the end of the afternoon by saying that the Fair was a triumph for the community spirit which is still alive and well in the countryside. The proceeds will be divided between the Church, the School and the Victory Hall. As the home will have a mini bus for a week visits have been arranged for residents to go to the Trust Carol service at the Church of Our Lady in Lincoln; to Springfields and Woodthorpe Garden Centre for Christmas shopping; to the pantomime in Skegness to see Peter Pan. Spilsby Primary school choir will also make a visit. Ten volunteers helped Iwona, the activities coordinator, to decorate Christmas trees on December 7 th and were then given lunch. A volunteers meeting was also held in order to update volunteers of the various activities. They were invited to the Eresby Christmas Party on December 19 th when a singer will be entertaining the residents. The residents will welcome in the New Year with a karaoke evening. The Christmas Fair held on December 10 th was a great success and raised 406. The night before, the Christmas Bingo had been held in the Franklin Hall and over 600 was raised which was an excellent result considering there were so many other things on in the town and surrounding villages. Thank you to all the people who organised the events and supported them in any way. It is very much appreciated. The residents, staff and volunteers would like to wish everyone A HAPPY NEW YEAR. 13

15 Light was the theme for this year s Christmas HOP event and the day was full of beautiful autumn sunshine. After meeting at St Mary's church in Hundleby we walked to the parish rooms where children of all ages and adults made some lovely craft items, including Christingle candles, which they were able to take home and share. At the end of our afternoon together, and after eating the first mince pies of the season, we returned to St Mary s church to sing songs and light our candles before saying our goodbyes. A big thank you to all who came and to the wonderful helpers who help make the day so enjoyable. Look out for our next event on Saturday 25 th February; a Fairtrade Tea Party. All ages are very welcome and we have plenty of room for those who would like to come along to watch the activities while enjoying a nice cup of tea and biscuits RAITHBY VILLAGE HALL The Village Hall Committee has secured Lottery Funding under the Awards for All scheme to undertake major works at the Village Hall. This money, together with an additional sum from the County Council and our own fund raising has enabled us to repair the wall behind the hall and add railings to raise it to the required height for current health and safety standards. In addition a new tarmac surface has been laid giving improved access to the patio area and the gate and railings giving access to the churchyard have also been refurbished. Thanks are due to Bill Aaron, our local Lincolnshire County Councillor, for his assistance and advice in securing these awards. We would also like to mention the local tradespeople who have done such an excellent job in carrying our these works: Nigel Spring who rebuilt the wall, Paul Chafer from Alford who made and erected the new railings and refurbished the existing ones, and John Baggot of J.B. Groundworks who laid the new tarmac. All did an excellent job with minimum disruption to events at the Village Hall. This work will enable us to continue to improve and expand the variety of events that we offer and the facilities available to residents of Raithby and the surrounding villages. 15

22 More Newhome thoughts on Computers. Last time I spoke about encryption so that you can keep all of those pesky passwords all in one safe place. This time I want to tell you some tricks about how to make and remember secure passwords. We are told that you must not use the same password for more than one thing. Passwords must use upper and lower case letters, numbers, special characters such as &, be a least 8 characters long. Then us poor humans are supposed to remember them. Right; this is where I perform a feet of magic and explain how you do this. What you need is information that you already know and will not forget. Then you apply a method of combining that information just like making a cake. Here is an example of a password 01nEt04oHn that is easy to remember. You don't believe me! This method is taking a date that you can remember. 1 st of April some year. Then two names from your history, best not obvious names like son and daughter. Here I picked Janet and John from the books I learnt to read with. Oh, you remember them too. From each name I have taken the last 3 letters. Notice I have been consistent and taken the same letters from each, the last 3. It is your choice which you choose, but if you try to mix it you will forget how you did it, so don't. Then I have capitalised the middle letter of each, remember be consistent. Do not capitalise the first letter as this is a predictable thing to do and the bad guys are using fast computers to brute force brake these. That is it; a 10 character password. Now prove you can remember it. Without looking write it on a piece of paper. Humans are good at method, bad at stupid strings of letters and numbers. Rules. Never use a complete date or word in any language. Whatever method you make up be consistent. Avoid things that can be looked up about you, like family, date of birth, etc. The internet is full of information about you. Try searching for your name in Lincolnshire or your name in Facebook. Try to add extra characters into the password, like %. These add complications. Don't think word1234 is a good method. This type takes less than 5 seconds and the longer the word the faster since there are less long words than short ones. Lastly don't let this frighten you. With a method you have the power to make strong locks and these can be kept in an encrypted spreadsheet. Scams. If anyone phones and says they are from a big company and you have a problem that they can help with. They are liars. Big companies have millions of customers and so will wait for you to contact them about your 22
23 problem; they have enough to worry about. Remember to send any general questions to for us to answer in next month s edition.
