1 Twenty-second Sunday After Pentecost BRINGING IN THE LIGHT OF CHRIST PRELUDE Highland Cathedral - Charles Callahn * HYMN O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing No Azmon * CALL TO WORSHIP Come, people of God. Come together in the presence of our Creator. We come, hungry for the new covenant God promises to write on our hearts. Come, people of faith. God is here to fill us with wisdom and patience. We come, yearning for God s justice and faithful presence in our world. * OPENING PRAYER: (in unison Holy God of all creation, we gather once again to celebrate our commitment to be your church in this time and place. As the prophet Jeremiah reminds us, the days are surely coming, when you will make a new covenant with us: you will be our God and we shall be your people. God of the open future, write your law within our hearts this morning, and in the days to come, that we may be a people committed to the way of Christ, who is our Savior. Amen. PROCLAMATION AND RESPONSE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Malachi 3: 6-12 Page 830 PSALTER * GLORIA #90 vs. 4 O Friends, in Gladness Let Us Sing No. 90 O friends, in gladness let us sing, supernal anthems echoing, Alleluia! Alleluia! To God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit, Three in One: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! EPISTLE LESSON II Corinthians 6: 1-12 Page 1006 ANTHEM (8:30 am) Thanks Be to God - Stephen Dean Sarah Charlock, soprano (10:45 am) Make My Life A Living Prayer -Aaron David Miller Chancel Choir * GOSPEL Luke 20: So they watched him, and sent spies, who pretended to be sincere, that they might take hold of what he said, so as to deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of the governor. 21 They asked him Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and show no partiality, but truly teach the way of God. 22 It is lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not? 23 But he perceived their craftiness, and said to them, 24 Show me a coin. Whose likeness and inscription has it? They said, Caesar s. 25 He said to them, Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar s and to God the things that are God s. 26 And they were not able in the presence of the people to catch him by what he said; but marveling at his answer they were silent. The Word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. SERMON Open Wide Your Hearts Rev. John C. 4 The FUMW Fall Bazaar is right around the corner and my "Botanical Missionaries" are getting in tip top shape and will look fabulous for the October 22 nd Event! As always, it is a honor, as well as a pleasure to bring all of this together and for a wonderful cause. Donations are always appreciated, here's a list of items most appreciated for the Booth: Plants, of course! Indoor, outdoor, anything goes! If you don't have anything to put them up on, not a problem, bring them bare rooted and I'll repot them. Pots, preferably ceramic or terrecotta AND with a drainage hole. Potting soil (at this writing I've already received a donation of bagged soil-thank you!) Plant stands, garden tools, etc. No plastic pots please! Thanks to all of you for the donations thus far, its going to be another successful Event! If you have any questions about a donation, feel free to call me at (my work number, ask for Cathy in Optical), , ghcagape@aol.com. Fun Fact about the Plant Booth: this years "crop" of Spider Plants were actually donated 2 years ago, it can take this long to get a donation of plants to look "just right", AND, I am already starting on cuttings for the 2017 Event! It's a year round labor of LOVE! In Service to our Christ, Cathy Nocon Co m in g So o n! Yes it is that time of the year again. The Merry Christmas Shoe Boxes will be available soon to send to children all over the world. Pick up one or more from the Narthex and return them filled on the first Sunday in November. If you have questions contact Jerry or Martha at ** We reserve the right to edit any information that is to be included in our Sunday Bulletin.** Lay Reader Workshop Today, Sunday, October 16, 2:00 4:00 p.m in the Fellowship Hall! Nonie Gilbert, a licensed lay reader trainer will be leading a lay reader workshop in our sanctuary. Nonie has been teaching church lay readers for more than 30 years. Participants have said her workshops have helped them to be confident, prepared and insightful. She is also an actress in New York City and New Jersey who has also written three plays. In her workshop, Nonie will be teach readers how to deliver God s word so that the congregation has better comprehension of the text and experiences the meaning of the text to full effect. By providing step-by-step tools, including a reader s preparation guide, this workshop will benefit all lay readers, as well as our congregation. If you are a lay reader, or would like to consider it, please come. There is no charge. You ll enjoy your time with Nonie. Acolyte/Crucifer Training - On Saturday, October 29, at 9:30 am, Acolyte/Crucifer Training will be held in the Sanctuary. All who are interested are asked to attend this very important session.
5 The Flowers on the Altar are given to the Glory of God by Ray and Deedra Hussein in celebration of their wedding anniversary. Welcome Visitors to this service of worship! Thanks be to God our rock and strength ever sustaining: Thanks be to God who never turns his face away; Thanks be to God who heals and pardons all who stray. 6 PSALTER Psalm 119 verses Lord, I love your law! I meditate on it all day long. Your commandments are always with me; they make me wiser than my enemies. I avoid walking the path of the evil in order to keep your word. Because you have taught me, I do not turn away from your truth. Lord, because I meditate on your decrees, I have gained more understanding than my own teachers. Because I keep your commandments, I understand more than those of old age. Your words are sweet to my taste. My wisdom comes from your precepts; therefore, I despise the way of the evil. (10:45 am) Peace Before Us Text: Navaho Indians Cherub Choir Music: David Haas Peace before us, peace behind us, peace under our feet. Peace within us, peace over us, let all around us be peace. Love before us, love behind us, love under our feet. Love within us, love over us, let all around us be love. Light before us, light behind us, light under our feet. Light within us, light over us, let all around us be light. Christ before us, Christ behind us, Christ under our feet. Christ within us, Christ over us, let all around us be Christ. (10:45 am) Make My Life A Living Prayer -Aaron David Miller Chancel Choir Make my life a living prayer. May I flourish in your sight. Make my life a living prayer. Where there is truth and wisdom, there is love. I am known to you in times of sickness. I am known to you in times of feebleness. I am known to you in times of darkness. I am known to you in times of loneliness. You are endless truth, endless wisdom, Love beyond all fear. Make my life a living prayer. May I flourish in your sight. Make my life a living prayer. Where there is truth and wisdom. Where there is truth and wisdom, there is love.
