1 The Progress is published monthly for members and friends of Pilgrim Lutheran Church. It is available in electronic (.pdf) and hardcopy formats. Submissions may be sent to the church via and are due in the office on the 15th of each month. Comments and subscription updates for The Progress may be ed to editor Melody Rath, What s Happening in June in: The Progress The purpose of Pilgrim Lutheran Church is to glorify God by fostering: Vibrant Worship Pilgrim is a prayerful place of vibrant worship where the gospel of Jesus Christ is faithfully proclaimed in a family-oriented, intergenerational atmosphere. Varied worship expressions come together to provide a rich response to the love of Christ in our lives. Bible-centered growth and teaching Pilgrim is purposeful about nurturing faith and spiritual growth in all who enter its doors as well as for those who are not able to enter. Pilgrim is a place where, led by the Holy Spirit, all children, youth, and adults may grow up into the full measure of the stature of Christ. Faith Conversations J u n e Nurturing congregational care Pilgrim members strive to model Christ s love and nurturing care to one another. Pilgrim is a family; care for one another is evidenced in all aspects of congregational life. Pilgrim is a place of health and healing where people of all ages find help for their life journeys. Intentional outreach and evangelism Pilgrims share with others the abundant life that they have received through faith in Christ and intentionally reach out to people of all ages with the love of Christ beginning with South Hill, Washington, and moving outward to the ends of the earth through local, national, and world-wide outreach. Schedule Birthdays & Anniversaries 13 8 Youth 6 Consider Jesus instruction to love your neighbor as yourself. With this in mind, to be a disciple of Jesus means we try to live out that directive. And lest we think this is a difficult and inconvenient task we have been given, Jesus says, in the Gospel of Matthew, My yoke is easy, and My burden is light. This is an invitation to, as you may have heard before, let go, and let God. We are invited to give up our struggles, and fears, and cares, and trade all that in for a life of discipleship, following Jesus Christ. And this necessarily means we do our best to love our neighbor. When we do this, Jesus promises His yoke is easy, the burden of life lived His way is light. But this seems so contrary to what we think. It is hard to trust Jesus on this. If I give to my neighbor, I might not have enough for myself. The weekend after Easter I was involved in a Walk to Emmaus Retreat at the Methodist Church in Silverdale. There are four clergy working on these retreats and they were having trouble finding a fourth to fill out the roster. My friend Stephanie, a Presbyterian minister from Anacortes, and the Spiritual Director for this Walk, asked if I would be willing to join the team. She said, I can t believe nobody wants to take a break and go on this retreat after the rigors of Holy Week and Easter. My response was, I don t really think of working a Walk as taking a break. But I agreed to join the clergy team. A Walk to Emmaus Retreat is designed to shower, even overwhelm, the pilgrims the intended focus of the retreat with messages of God s love in many and sundry ways. Those of us working a Walk are the means by which God s love (Continued on page 2)

Along with us four pastors, there were people cooking, giving presentations on grace and on living the Christian life; there was a lot of singing. All of it is meant to say in a million ways, God loves you, just as you are, before you have done anything to earn his love. In other words, we seek to declare God s love by loving our neighbor. Despite my reluctance to spend the weekend after Easter working a retreat, I ended up benefiting in many ways from all that we did the singing, worship, presentations, good food all that we did contributed to a feeling for me, of walls being broken down, and a sense of renewal and refreshment. For these retreats, there is a cost. We make a commitment of time, of energy; and there is a financial cost we have to pay our own way to work on a Walk. Plus, we can t take a shower for three days. But despite that it was a wonderful experience, as these retreats always are. Each Walk has a theme verse and a theme song for the Retreat. I m still singing the theme song in my head a month and a half later. The reasons for sharing this with you, is to make the point that while the life of discipleship to Jesus Christ is costly, it is not difficult nor inconvenient nor a hassle. To be a disciple there is something asked of us; there is a cost. But, it is not a burdensome life. In fact it is exactly the opposite. A life of discipleship is the source of joy, fulfillment, and satisfaction. It is true what Jesus says, My yoke is easy and My burden is light. This is the opposite of what we naturally think, and how we typically try to live. Thinking only of ourselves, as it turns out, is a heavy burden. It is a joyless existence. We think we will be satisfied and fulfilled, but we will always be disappointed when we only look out for #1, always put ourselves first, and are careless toward others. What is freeing, satisfying, fulfilling, and joy producing is to care for others, and to put others and their well-being first, ahead of our own. This is the life of discipleship. This is where life and joy and peace are found. Matthew 11:28-30 says, Come to Me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light. (NRSV) Rest for our souls, a joy-filled life, rather than a heavy burden these are wrapped up in loving your neighbor. When you finally get tired of carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders, of trying to win, to come out on top; to measure up, to be worthy; Jesus says you can come and give your burdens and your worries to Him. In exchange He will give you rest, peace; His love will breakdown your walls of resistance; will renew and refresh you; will give you life.

3 Pilgrim s Pantry Bob Klavano 3 Our 2015 Budget projects a pattern of building up a reserve with more income than expenses during the first half of the year, and then using that cushion in the second half of the year so that we will return to our January 1 starting balance at the end of the year. Pilgrim is actually building up more of a reserve that we planned for in the budget. Our reserve is expected to increase when we get the May 31 figures and perhaps the increase may even continue during June. So the budget is trending a little better than we had projected. This financial situation allows us to celebrate the good news of the Gospel and look outward at our opportunities for mission and service. Note in the figures below that our reserve (net income, year to date) is $14,000 above our budget figure. Our other income reflects the receipt of a federal rebate for health insurance expenses. Our offering this year has been 98% of what was pledged and our expenses have been 96.7% of the budgeted amount. 4 Bible-Centered Growth and Teaching 4 go & make disciples... Christian Education Update Julie Halpin & Kim Waterstraat, Co-Directors Last Sunday, we wrapped up our official Sunday education (JAM!!!) year here at Pilgrim. What a wonderful year it was, as we explored all the various ways we Love as Jesus Loves! This theme has provided a foundation for how God calls us to live our life. Everything we do and say throughout our days should be focused on this theme but that s not an easy task at times! There is so much to divert our attention in negative ways whiny kids, loud neighbors, traffic, long lines, illness, injury, and this list is never ending. So while I find this theme easy to think about, sometimes it is not so easy to carry out! It requires a daily discipline and awareness for me AND my children! Matthew 28:20 Thank you to all of you who came, even one time, to bless us with your presence this year. Each of our faith journeys are at different stages, and interwoven together we learn and grow with each other in the body of Christ! To all the fantastic teachers and staff who touched us all in so many ways, your heartfelt love and devotion did not go without notice to have taught is to touch a life forever. Over the summer, there will be ample opportunities to come together. Church will be one service every Sunday at 9:30 this is a great chance to come and worship with each other and engage in a little fellowship. VBS is July 13-16, we have plenty of room for kiddos ages four through 5 th grade, and always needing volunteers! Please register online at Pastor Steve will be continuing his Tuesday morning Bible studies. The Women s Bible study on Thursday mornings at 9:15 will continue to meet until mid-july (and newcomers ALWAYS welcome Come when you can is our motto!). We will have youth and adult events, so stay tuned to the announcements, newsletter, website, and Facebook! And more than anything, we welcome back our dearly beloved Jeff Hobson, who will be resuming leading our youth and family activities! I know for my own kids, they are PLENTY done with having their parents overly involved and ready for some Jeff!!! Welcome back Jeff, we love you and are ready for some fun. We will be gearing up for a new education year over the summer. We welcome all suggestions and ideas! If you are interested in helping in any shape or form with children, youth, or adult activities, you will be wellrewarded! Just let us know and we ll find just the spot for you! Have a blessed summer and we look forward to seeing you! Warmly, Kim and Julie

5 Bible-Centered Growth and Teaching 5 go & make disciples... Christian Education Update Julie Halpin & Kim Waterstraat, Co-Directors Thank You for Loving as Jesus Loves! As we wrap up the education year, please join in honoring all of our wonderful, dedicated teachers! Their love and encouragement has continually provided a fruitful environment for all of our kids, age s preschool through adult, to thrive and grow! Their impact contributes to the growth of our entire community, and we simply could not do it without them. Their answer to God's call of "yes!" when asked to step into this extremely important role has simply made this year outstanding! So take a moment to search out these amazing people who have lived out our theme of "Loving as Jesus Loves" and thank them! 7 Nurturing Congregational Care From the Health Ministry Cabinet use the gifts received to serve others 1 Peter 4: June is Men s Health Month! There are many easy things you can do every day to improve your health and stay health! Get Good Sleep Insufficient sleep is associated with a number of chronic diseases and conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and depression. Also, insufficient sleep is responsible for motor vehicle and machinery-related accidents, causing substantial injury and disability each year. Sleep guidelines from the National Sleep Foundation have noted that sleep needs change as we age. In general, adults need between 7-9 hours of sleep. Toss out the Tobacco It s never too late to quit. Quitting smoking has immediate and long-term benefits. It improves your health and lowers your risk of heart disease, cancer, lung disease, and other smoking-related illnesses. Also avoid being around secondhand smoke. Inhaling other people's smoke causes health problems similar to those that smokers have. Babies and kids are still growing, so the poisons in secondhand smoke hurt them more than adults. Move More Adults need at least 2½ hours of moderateintensity aerobic activity (such as brisk walking) every week, and muscle strengthening activities that work all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders, and arms) on two or more days a week. You don't have to do it all at once. Spread your activity out during the week, and break it into smaller chunks of time during the day. Eat Healthy Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables every day. They are sources of many vitamins, minerals, and other natural substances that may help protect you from chronic diseases. Limit foods and drinks high in calories, sugar, salt, fat, and alcohol. Choose healthy snacks. Tame Stress Sometimes stress can be good. However, it can be harmful when it is severe enough to make you feel overwhelmed and out of control. Take care of yourself. Avoid drugs and alcohol. Find support. Connect socially. Stay active. Stay on Top of Your Game See your doctor or nurse for regular checkups. Certain diseases and conditions may not have symptoms, so checkups help diagnose issues early or before they can become a problem. Pay attention to signs and symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, excessive thirst, and problems with urination. If you have any of these symptoms, or symptoms of any kind, be sure to see your doctor right away. Don t wait!

Each Wednesday during the summer (starting July 8 th ), from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM, we will have lunch, games and crafts for kids and youth aged four to 17. Pilgrim Lunch Club is open to everyone in the community, as well as the congregation. This is such a great way to connect with families in our community and it is such a blessing to touch these kids lives, if only for a short period of time! We are looking for volunteers who would be willing to help out by either helping prepare lunch or by helping with a craft or a game. If you have any questions, or would like more information, please contact Rachelle Lessard.

11 Support Our Ministry 11 How Can You Love Pilgrim Lutheran Church? Let Us Count the Ways Help us stay financially strong and grow especially through these summer months. Giving options are listed below Envelope Giving: Weekly, bi-monthly, monthly by check or cash. Just put your offering in the plate or bring to the office. On-Line Banking: Use your individual bank s on-line services, such as Bill Pay, to have your offering sent directly to the church. (No Fees) A great option! Simply Giving: Your offering is withdrawn automatically by EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer) from your bank account and deposited directly into Pilgrim s account. You do NOT need to be a Thrivent member; just sign-up with our Financial Secretary and designate the amount and date of each transfer, (a small fee is paid by the church) or sign up online at NEW!!! Credit/Debit Card Giving: Enter your card information with the amount and date of your offering into the secure web page linked through our website (gold button in the lower left corner of the home page). There are fees associated with this type of giving which will be deducted from the offering when it s deposited. [A small transaction fee PLUS 2.65% for Visa- MasterCard-Discover or 3.5% for American Express.] For example, a VISA contribution of $100 would be reduced by $2.65. A $500 contribution via AMEX would actually be only $ to Pilgrim. So you may want to adjust your donation accordingly. Thank you for your generosity as we continue to support our church community! Your Finance & Stewardship Committees Dear Pilgrim family: It is with very mixed emotions that we write this goodbye; sadness as we leave our Pilgrim family and joy as we move on to new adventures in California. We have been a family for many years- some of us going back to the mid-80 s! However, we rejoice that we will be forever connected as brothers and sisters in Christ! You will be in our thoughts and prayers as we all continue on our faith journey. We were touched with the sendoff last Sunday. Special thanks to Maynard, Lise, the choir and the Yates for the treats and the decorations. It was an honor to be able to sing one more time with the choir. As we begin our final move into our new adventure, we look forward to where God is calling us to serve in our new community. We have already met many new friends and begun to attend a church that reminds us a lot of Pilgrim. There aren t enough words to express our gratitude and love we have for this Pilgrim family. Thanks for being there when we needed you, for challenging our faith, and inspiring our commitment. God be with you til we meet again! Blessings Mike and Cathy Col 1:3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you.
