Ancient Israel was a landbased, agrarian society. The staples of their agricultural economy were barley and wheat (bread); grapes (wine); olives (olive oil); figs, dates, and honey; cale, goats, and sheep (beef, milk, muon, and wool). The land itself was Promised, flowing with milk and honey, given to the Chosen People by God aer generaons of forced labor in Egypt and forty years in the desert. Not only did God provide the land; God also made the plants grow, produced an abundant harvest, and gave increase to their herds and flocks. Everything the people had was a gi from God. The harvest itself was regarded as sacred, and to acknowledge God s great goodness the people offered their first fruits back to God. The offering of first fruits was automatic, a normal expectation for faithfilled Jews, and it applied to every form of produce whether in the raw or processed form (Ex 44:30). They were brought to the Temple and laid at the altar or given directly to the priests. These offerings funded Temple programs and supported the Levites who presided over the religious rituals, taught, and managed Temple s affairs. The Levites were the only tribe with no land or income, and they depended upon these offerings to support themselves and their families (Dt 18:15). The amount to be given is not specified; thing is a separate maer. The presentation of first fruits was an act of faith. It was an acknowledgment that God is the giver of all good things, and that everything belongs to God; a declaration that first fruits are holy, and that everything else to be produced is also holy and should be used as God would want; an act of trust that God would connue to provide all that is needed; an expression of thanks for God s gis; a request for God to pour out blessings on one s household; and a way to support the spiritual mission of the Temple. Jesus said nothing about first fruits, nor are there any New Testament wrings on the subject, yet the principles of first fruits lie at the foundaon of our Chrisan stewardship philosophy. We no longer barter or trade in commodies; we trade in money. We have shied from an agrarian culture to an industrialized, hightechnology, informaon age. While a few work in agriculture, most of us work in offices, factories, stores, clinics, or schools that bear lile resemblance to the ancient world. For them, rewards came at harvest me, for us, rewards come on pay day. In olden days first fruits of the field were offered to God, and in modern days first fruits of the paycheck are to be offered to God. It would be unthinkable for a faithful Jew to give God leovers, whatever remained aer one s personal needs were met. God always comes first, a belief that is easily verified by the way one shares off the top rather than off the boom. First Fruitsconnued on page 4 Your generous hands in our future

4 4 First Fruitsconnued from page 1 We Americans live in an insanely materialisc culture. Our standard of living is the highest of any era of history or any place in the world. Adversers have convinced us that many of our modern conveniences are necessies, not luxuries. Our homes grow larger as the number of occupants declines. Instead of one TV, we have three or four; instead of one vehicle, we have cars, pickup trucks, vans, SUVs, RVs, boats, snowmobiles, and lots of other stuff, while we barely have enough money to make ends meet. With all of these blessings, it is not uncommon to hear, There s just not enough le for the church. Two paradigms or ways of thinking are operave here: the typical American opinion that God gets whatever is le aer our personal wants are met, or the biblical concept that God gets first fruits and we get to keep the rest. These paradigms are worlds apart. It s all a maer of priories: does God come first or do we come first? If we come ahead of God it is idolatry, a sin against the First Commandment. When it comes to stewardship, God would have us think first fruits, not leovers. As we tally up the innumerable ways we have been blessed, God deserves to be Number One! 6 6 JUSTICE & SERVICE September Focus: Healthcare For a response to the healthcare crisis that reflects Catholic Social Teaching, we must consider opons that will make healthcare affordable and accessible for all people. In a leer to Congress, the United States Council of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) repeated the call for healthcare that is universal and affordable. In a 2009 leer to Congress, my predecessor as Chairman of the USCCB Commiee on Domesc Jusce and Human Development, Bishop William Murphy, wrote: All people need and should have access to comprehensive, quality health care that they can afford, and it should not depend on their stage of life, where or whether they or their parents work, how much they earn, where they live, or where they were born. The Bishops Conference believes health care reform should be truly universal and it should be genuinely affordable. In this same leer they quote Pope Francis: Health, indeed, is not a consumer good, but a universal right which means that access to healthcare services cannot be a privilege. Catholic Social Teaching does not idenfy a specific heath care plan or payment system but is very clear about outcomes that we have yet to achieve. As Catholics, we must be involved in the discussion. This requires prayer and study. In addion, or maybe beer sll, spend some me with those that are sick, those that do not have health insurance, or those that struggle to pay for health insurance out of their monthly paycheck. These people are closer than you think and might include the person at the grocery checkout, your massage therapist or your yoga instructor, your neighbor. This is a real issue that impacts real lives! STEWARDSHIP Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward. MARK 9:41 Does your life reflect the life of Jesus? Remember, we were made in His image. We tend to forget this. When others see you, do they see the face of Jesus? When you look at others, do you see the face of Jesus in them? From a heart of Gratitude, we give our Treasure.
