Every year Interfaith Outreach conducts its annual Sleep Out during the months of November and December, and every fall St. Bart s reserves a weekend for a second collecon to support its mission and outreach. This year the collecon for Interfaith Outreach is set for the weekend of November 24 and 25. Giving by Check, the Normal Procedure. When a second collecon is conducted for a foreign or domesc missionary, as we do each summer for the Archdiocesan Missionary Cooperave, or an emergency collecon is taken up for disaster relief for a hurricane, tsunami, tornado, earthquake, or a famine, if the donaon is made by check, the normal procedure is to make the check payable to St. Bartholomew and put missions or disaster relief on the memo line. This protects the identy of the donor and it allows the donor s check to clear the bank promptly. Some charitable agencies have conducted unauthorized followup solicitations with the names on checks, or held checks for a long time before depositing them. Aer the collecon, the parish keeps the donaons separate and makes a lump sum payment to the charity or relief agency. Giving by Check, an Excepon. If you would like to donate to the Sleep Out by check, it should be made payable to Interfaith Outreach. The organizaon is local, wellknown, and extremely reputable. Checks are always deposited promptly. The parish encourages members to have an ongoing relaonship with Interfaith Outreach, and to support its efforts throughout the year. In addion, cash donaons are greatly appreciated, and envelopes will be in the pews for those who would like to donate with their credit cards. A Special and Privileged Relaonship. Interfaith Outreach was founded by a St. Bartholomew parishioner, LaDonna Hoy, and it all began in our church basement. As Interfaith has expanded over the years, St. Bart s has been a loyal partner and supporter every step of the way. Today when a person or family comes to the parish requesng help, they are referred to Interfaith Outreach, and it serves as our agent in providing assistance to the poor and needy in our area. God has a special love for the poor, God is pleased when we share his concern, and our support of Interfaith Outreach is an effecve and reliable way to do so. A Wide Range of Crical Services. It all started with a food shelf, but it quickly expanded to clothing, ulity bills, child care, and transportaon to medical appointments and job interviews. Assistance for a crisis situaon does not address the longterm need. Now a case manager assists each client and provides comprehensive support with informaon, advocacy, counseling, and problemsolving, as well as referrals to other community resources. Interfaith has employment services, computer classes, parenng classes, and early childhood educaon opportunies. An Emerging Urgent Need. Last year 1 in 5 families that worked with Interfaith Outreach experienced homelessness. There is a severe shortage of affordable housing units for low income families. Rents are increasing. For those who make $15.00 an hour or less, housing, if available, takes a disproporonate share of the family s income. Previous donaons to Interfaith Outreach have helped to prevent homelessness for 32,098 families, and the goal in 2019 is to help 2000 families stabilize their living situaons. A generous donaon will be a great help.

2 2 I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do. John 13:15 FR. MIKE VAN SLOUNAO PrayerThanksgiving St. Raphael the Archangel, Milwaukee, WI THANKSGIVING: YESTERDAY AND TODAY A HARVEST FESTIVAL AND A FAMILY CELEBRATION Thanksgiving was declared a naonal holiday in the United States by President Abraham Lincoln in Lincoln said it was to be a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. Thanksgiving began as a harvest fesval someme between September and November in It was one year after the Mayflower had arrived. 102 pilgrims had landed on the coast of Massachuses. Aer a brutal winter of cold, disease, and starvaon, only 53 colonists survived to the next fall. The local Wampanoag tribe of Nave Americans came to the aid of the colonists, taught them how to plant corn and ferlize their fields with fish, and with a bounful harvest and good hunng, both had plenty of food in reserve to survive the upcoming winter. In gratude for the harvest, 90 of the Wampanoag tribe and the 53 remaining colonists joined together for three days of celebraon. They feasted on five deer, a variety of birds, corn, grapes, plums, mussels, lobsters, and herbs. Thanksgiving is sll about thanks for the harvest, and agriculture has come a long way since Tractors with cultivators and planters and huge combines make it possible to use large tracts of land. New seed hybrids are constantly being developed. The use of ferlizers, herbicides, and pescides has improved yields. Producon, harvesng, transportaon, processing, packaging, and distribuon have become extremely efficient. The shelves in grocery stores are well stocked. Foods are affordable. Most Americans have full refrigerators and cupboards, and most do not go to bed at night on an empty stomach. Now fewer Americans work on the farm, the food supply is reliable, and there is lile worry about having enough food to get through the winter. As a result, while the focus of the holiday is sll on thanksgiving for the harvest, it has been generalized as a me of thanksgiving for all of our blessings: the land, our country, our freedoms, our safety and security, the quality of educaon and health care, employment, income, savings, homes, possessions, cultural and recreaonal opportunies, and the countless other good things that we enjoy. Filled with a tremendous sense of gratude for all of this, we thank God and gather with our families to celebrate. Our families are such a gi. Our parents and grandparents, brothers and sisters, children and grandchildren, aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews rank as some of the greatest blessings that God has given to us. The love and care given and received, the sacrifices made, meals together, family conversaons, vacaons and holidays, ups and downs, fights and makeups, suffering through illness and hardship, promises made and kept, traveling the journey of life hand in hand, and the common bond shared family is a gi beyond all measure. On Thanksgiving we ought to praise and thank God for the gi of our families. For those who have gone ahead of us, we can send a prayer of thanks to them in heaven. For the members of our immediate families, we can thank God for each one of them, menon them individually, and ask God to shower them with his special graces and divine protecon. Thanksgiving, or a day near it, is a wonderful occasion to get together with our immediate family, and relaves, too, to eat and drink, rejoice and celebrate, and deepen and renew the bonds of love. PrayerPraise St. Raphael the Archangel, Milwaukee, WI Finally, Thanksgiving is an ideal occasion to thank our family members, to express our thanks to them personally, to speak it out loud, to idenfy specific instances when they have said or done something that we appreciate or affected our life in a posive way. We should not leave important things unsaid. If we are grateful, we should say so. To thank a family member who is near and dear to our heart is a beauful way to express our love for them.
