2 Page 2 From The Pastor s Desk Now Known as Chardonnay W(h)ines! The month of October is Respect Life Month. The following reflection is from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. PARISH PRIESTS Fr. Don McLaughlin, Pastor , Ext. 228 frdon@olmercy.com Fr. Mark Bernhard, Parochial Vicar , Ext. 226 frmark@olmercy.com In 1531, when the indigenous peoples of Mexico were subjugated and the practice of human sacrifice was still a recent memory, the Mother of God appeared to St. Juan Diego as a pregnant native woman, now known as Our Lady of Guadalupe. She sent him with miraculous flowers in his cloak to tell the bishop to build a church where people could receive her Son and her loving, tender care. When St. Juan Diego opened the cloak before the bishop, an image of Our Lady was revealed that remains to this day. The chapel was quickly built, millions embraced Christianity, and the Church increased its protection of the indigenous peoples. By embracing the mission entrusted to him, St. Juan Diego helped bring Christ s transforming love to cultures gripped by oppression and death. Today, we again see the dignity of human life disregarded. Unborn children are destroyed through abortion, and ill people are encouraged and assisted to take their own lives. How do we respond? The essence of our identity is that we are created in God s image and likeness and loved by Him. Nothing can diminish the priceless worth of any human life. Every person is cherished. God creates every person for eternal union with Himself and continually invites us to embrace aloving relationship with Him. Every person is chosen. We are called to be messengers of God s love, treating one another as cherished and chosen by Him. In doing so, we help build a culture that respects all human life. Every person is sent. Like St. Juan Diego, let us embrace our daily mission to help others encounter God s transforming, life-giving love. 5 Liturgy Page 5 WORDS OF WISDOM The spirit of wisdom, as we discover in today s first reading, comes to those who pray for her. Wisdom, like the word of God, carries a message of consolation as well as of great challenge. The Letter to the Hebrews tells us that the word of God, infused with the wisdom of God, is sharper than any two-edged sword. We cannot shrink from the wisdom of God, or from the word that has the power to penetrate our hearts and minds. Jesus, the living word of God, the embodiment of wisdom, has strong, deeply penetrating words for the rich young man who comes to him seeking answers to his most profound questions. Just when the young man thought he had done enough to fulfill God s commands, more was asked of him. This is no less true for us. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION They say that it is not so much that Columbus discovered America, but rather that after he arrived, the new world stayed discovered. The sponsorship of Ferdinand and Isabella assured that the news would flash around Europe with an air of authority that other discoverers lacked. One of the oft-mentioned early visitors is Saint Brendan the Navigator, a sixth-century Irish monk who had trouble staying at home. He is said to have sailed to the Isle of the Blessed in a leather-bound boat, and to have been away from his monastery for seven years. Upon his return, the stories of adventures to a new land attracted pilgrims to his monastery in the Blasket Islands, off the west coast of Ireland. Columbus is said to have referred to The Voyage of Saint Brendan, a very popular adventure in those days. Only after his American journey is Brendan said to have gone to tamer lands to the east, England and Scotland. In 1976, Tim Severin set out on a two-year voyage to America from Ireland in a leather-bound boat, traveling in summer and hopscotching from the Faroes to Iceland to Newfoundland, and encountering along the way exactly what Saint Brendan describes: icebergs, whales, and porpoises. Scholars warn not to dismiss this too quickly: just as the ancient Egyptian monks sought to live in the desert, for the Celtic monks exile in a boat was the Irish equivalent. Five centuries after Brendan, other Irish monks may have visited here as a refuge from Viking terror. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 6 Page 6 RELIGIOUS EDUCATON (Grades K-5) Two Special Prayers in the Month of October When teachers and parents lead by example, we enlighten children s minds and form hearts of love. With the Feast of the Guardian Angels celebrated yearly on October 2 and Our Lady of the Rosary on October 7, we see we have an opportunity to give our children a special gift by teaching and praying two prayers with them every day: The Hail Mary and The Guardian Angel prayers. Praying The Hail Mary gradually gives our children the insight that Mary, the first Christian disciple and most powerful Saint, wants nothing more than to help us be united us with her son, Jesus. Praying The Guardian Angel prayer acknowledges the awesome wonder of this God-given gift, and over time, makes the presence of their protection and guidance strongly felt. What parent or teacher would not want these gifts for our children??? Look for copies of these prayers in your children s RE folders or browse prayers by alphabetical order at EDGE (Grades 6-8) SENIOR HIGH YOUTH MINISTRY NEWS (Grades 9-12) L.I.G.H.T. 7 Pastoral Care Page 7 Caring for the Mind, Body and Spirit National Breast Cancer Awareness Month The month of October is an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of detecting breast cancer early. Statistics reflect that about one in eight women born today in the United States will get breast cancer which is the second most common kind of cancer in women. The good news is that most women can survive breast cancer if it is found and treated early. Be aware that breast cancer also occurs in men as over 2,000 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. The best way to know when to begin screening for mammograms and how often to get screenings is to talk to your medical provider. Begin talking to your medical provider about screenings for breast cancer by age forty. To determine whether you are at average risk or higher risk for breast cancer, share your family history and personal history with your doctor. A woman age 50 to 74 is recommended to get a mammogram at least every two years and may choose to get one more often. If you have questions about breast cancer screening, call the American Cancer Society at or visit cancer.org/breastcancer. One can reduce the risk of breast cancer through lifestyle changes that have been shown in studies to decrease breast cancer risk even in high-risk women. Steps to take to lower risk are as follows. Limit alcohol. Studies show that the more alcohol you drink, the greater the risk of developing breast cancer. The recommendation is less than one drink per day. Don t smoke. Evidence is suggesting a link between smoking and breast cancer risk. Control your weight. The risk of breast cancer increases with being overweight or obese. Be physically active. Physical activity helps maintain a healthy weight which helps prevent breast cancer. The Department of Health & Human Services suggests for most healthy adults at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity weekly, plus strength training at least twice a week. Breast-feeding may have a protective effect against breast cancer. Limit the dose and duration of hormone therapy. Avoid exposure to radiation and environmental pollution. ( It is important to be vigilant about breast cancer detection. Consult with your doctor if you notice any changes in the breast such as a lump or skin changes. Ask your doctor when to begin mammograms and other screenings based on personal history. If you have any questions about breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, please contact Jolene LeRoy RN for assistance to navigate the health care system and for support from the Our Lady of Mercy Cancer Care Ministry at or at jolenel@olmercy.com.
