2 Page 2 From The Pastor s Desk I find myself saying on every Labor Day weekend Can you believe that summer is over already! While summer is over in the sense of outdoor swimming pools and beaches we know summer doesn t officially end until September 22 this year, so we still have time to enjoy God s gift of the beauty of summer. Don t put those BBQ grills and patio deck chairs away just yet! And one of the great things I enjoy about Labor Day weekend, it kicks off the college football season. Go Irish! But just as on Memorial Day weekend that unofficially starts the summer season, we don t want to forget there is a reason for this holiday. On Memorial Day, we remember those who have died defending the ideas and principals of our nations. Labor Day, started in the 19 th century honors the American labor movement and the contribution that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, laws and well-being of our country. Our Church, through the teachings and proclamations of several popes and American bishops promote the dignity and rights of workers, as well as fair and just salaries. So on this holiday weekend, let us not forget those who are un-employed, under-employed, and all who struggle to make ends meet. As I did last year on the weekend after Labor Day, I will be speaking at all the Masses next weekend to share with you the annual fiscal report for the fiscal year July 1, 2017 through June 30, I will share with you some of the highlights and good news for the past fiscal year as well as some of the budgetary needs for the current fiscal year that just started July 1 st. As always I am so very grateful for the sacrificial support you have given to Our Lady of Mercy as well as the sharing of your time and talents in our various ministries and outreach programs. The weekend of September 15 th and 16 th will be our annual stewardship commitment weekend for your financial support of OLM through the Sunday collection. In the week prior to commitment weekend you will receive in the mail your commitment card. As you review the materials and consider the needs I will outline next weekend, I ask you to prayerfully consider your weekly or monthly contribution, and if possible make a small increase to help us reach our goals for the fiscal year. Please bring your completed commitment card to Mass the weekend of September 15/16. We will have cards in the pew in the event you forget your card. Again, Fr. Mark and I are so very grateful for the spiritual support and affirmation you have given us, and we have seen that support by the increase in the Sunday collection for the year. Please be assured that we remember you and thank God for you in our daily prayers! Have a blessed Labor Day weekend! PARISH STAFF Fr. 5 Liturgy Page 5 THE HIGHEST LAW From time to time, newspapers and magazines will offer, as an item of filler, various laws that are still on the books but seem silly to us in our day and age. In one California city, it is illegal to have two indoor bathtubs in one house. Clean water, a precious commodity when the law was written, is now readily available, so the law seems silly. But the human value of protecting and preserving precious resources is still around, evident in many conservation laws that seem sensible to us. So it is with the laws of religious tradition. What Jesus scorns today is others attitude toward ritual laws, an attitude that becomes nearly idolatrous when laws are observed for their own sake. Jesus teaches that observation of external ritual laws is of value only when they are emblems of our internal disposition toward the will of God. Our whole lives must follow the one ultimate law of God: to love God completely and to love neighbor entirely. Roman Catholicism is a tradition rich with customs, traditions, and even laws. As we continue to listen to the voice of Christ, we must always look into our own hearts and underneath our ritual practices to make sure that love of God and love of neighbor are what we prize above all. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. TODAY S READINGS First Reading For what great nation is there that has gods so close to it as the LORD, our God, is to us? (Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8). Psalm The one who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord (Psalm 15). Second Reading Religion that is pure is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction (James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27). Gospel This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me (Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23). THE ORIGINAL CURRENCY Labor was the first price, the original purchasemoney that was paid for all things. It was not by gold or by silver, but by labor, that all wealth of the world was originally purchased. Adam Smith TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Parish Access Code: WKZJPW When an altar is dedicated, the Rite of Dedicaton directs that, if possible, the relics of a martyr be mortared into the church floor under the mensa, or altar table. Up until this revised rite, the general practice was to include small relics of saints in an altar stone, a slab of marble that was normally set in the altar itself. Today s rite states a clear preference for martyr, and for a substantial part of the body, in accord with our tradition s desire for substantial symbols. Martyr, of course, means witness in Greek, and was the title given early on to the people who by their death imaged the death of Christ. From the beginning, there has never been a shortage of such people, although it took a while for the Church to develop a process to declare someone a martyr. Saint Augustine tells how it was done in the fifth century. By then, popular opinion didn t count as much as an official tribunal set up by the bishop of the place where the martyr suffered. After the inquiry established that the person did indeed die for the faith, a metropolitan bishop had to ratify the decision before a shrine could be built or an altar set up over the martyr s tomb. For the most part, the honor paid to a martyr (called a cult ) was restricted to that diocese, although the fame of some heroes spread so much that they were celebrated elsewhere. The age of the martyrs is now, and more people died for the faith in the twentieth century than ever before, witnessing to Christ to the end. Their sacrifice remains the seed of the Church. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

7 Pastoral Care Page 7 Caring for the Mind, Body and Spirit National Preparedness Month September is designated as National Preparedness Month which is an opportunity to prepare ourselves and our families for any disaster that may occur. The theme this year is: Disasters Happen. Prepare Now. Learn How. Each week this month will focus on a different theme to help you be prepared in advance and to know what to do when a disaster strikes. Week One: September 1-9 theme is: Make and Practice Y our Plan. It is important to know which types of disasters could affect the area you live in. There are four steps to consider in this focus area. Step One is to put together a plan by discussing four questions with your family, friends or household to start your emergency plan: How will I receive emergency alerts and warnings. What is my shelter plan? What is my evacuation route? What is my family/household communication plan? NEW DAY Step Two is to consider specific needs in your household: tailor your plans and supplies to your specific daily living needs and responsibilities. Think about how people in your network can assist each other with communication, care of children, business, pets or specific needs like the operation of durable medical equipment. Keep in mind some of these factors when developing your plan: dietary needs, medical needs including medications and equipment, languages spoken and disabilities or functional needs. A journey from grief to hope and healing. For ages 18 and over September 13 through October 25 7:00 pm in the Ministry Room Register at jolenel@olmercy.com Step Three is to fill out a family emergency plan. There is a guide to create your plan at Step Four is to practice your plan with your family/household so that if a disaster occurs, everyone knows what to do and how to communicate with each other if everyone is not together. For additional information, handouts and guides, visit New Day A Journey from Grief to Hope and Healing If you are grieving the loss of a loved one and would like support and resources during this time, please consider participating in the New Day grief support sessions that will occur on Thursdays September 13, 20, 27 and October 4, 11, 18 and 25 at 7:00PM in the Ministry Room located in the church. Facilitators for the sessions are Marissa Happ, DSW, LCSW, C-SWHC, Assistant Professor/Coordinator MSW Health Care/Gerontology Specializations Aurora University and Jolene LeRoy RN BSN Director of Pastoral Care at Our Lady of Mercy. There are several truths that assist with understanding the grieving process. Grief is a normal and natural reaction to the death of a loved one. No two people grieve the same way. In order to move beyond your grief, you must work at it. It is not selfish to be self-caring. Grief work takes much longer than most people expect. If you would like to attend the grief sessions, please contact Jolene LeRoy RN at jolenel@olmercy.com or at (331)
