1 STGMA GOSPEL NOTES The Bi-Monthly Newsletter for South Texas Gospel Music Association Vol. 16, Issue 3 - July - August STGMA founded 1999 by Janet & Billy Miller WELCOME NEW STGMA MEMBER Birthright Ministries Dallas, TX John Barber was born in Mineola, TX, but raised in Southern Louisiana about 30 miles west of Baton Rouge. He began his musical career playing trombone in the school band at the age of 12 and started playing piano at the age of 16. John sings & plays keyboard, as well as writing and arranging music. Birthright was formed in the early 1990s. Rita Barber was born in Terrell, TX and is the daughter of a Baptist preacher. Through the years, she has sung as a soloist, with a female trio and in a quartet with her brothers. She has a low harmony style of singing--developed through singing with a long line of alto singers. As a result, Rita can sing low harmony to high tenor. In addition to singing in the trio, she also writes & arranges music. John Graves sang lead and baritone with the Graves Gospel Singers and performed in the Southern U.S. for ten years. While in college, John was a member of the Shreveport Chamber Singers and the Marshall Symphony Chorus. Afterewards, he spent 10 years with Southern Harmony of Tyler and another 8 years with Of One Accord of Frisco. In 2013, he joined Birthright Ministries and now sings, writes and arranges music. Thanks to Megan & the City of Luling for creating a new gospel music event which will take place annually in June. ROBERT LANNING Cibolo, Texas Robert Lanning brought stability and direction to the STGMA Leadership Team. He recently resigned from the position of Vice President to devote more time to his duties as part of the staff of Community Bible Church in San Antonio. Robert created the on-line balloting system which we uses for the STGMA Gospel Music Awards. As Music Minister at Immanuel Baptist Church in Kyle, STGMA gained a new concert venue that has hosted numerous STGMA events.. Robert also conceived and launched STGMA 2.0 which assists youth who wish to improve their singing and performance skills. He and his family will continue singing at future STGMA concert events.
