MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF THE OHIO STATE COUNCIL KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS OCTOBER 2017 State Deputy News and Notes The Rules of Engagement Kevin Miller Brother Knights: We have reached the point in our fraternal year where all of us are working hard to make the Knights of Columbus successful here in the Great State of Ohio -- your state officers and directors, District Deputies, Grand Knights and councils officers should all be working on the many activities and projects that make the Knights an important part of our communities of faith. While we re off to bit of a slow start toward our membership goals for the year, we remain confident that though our collective efforts we can obtain the good Catholic men we need to continue to advance the cause of Columbianism and provide our clergy and parishes with the support the so greatly need. In my past columns, I ve talked about the critical importance of fostering a culture of engagement, of inclusion within the Knights, within our councils. It is my strong belief that by doing the good work we are already doing with this in mind, that success is virtually assured. To further illustrate and drive home this important point, I thought I would give you my Rules of Engagement not in the military context with many of you may be familiar with, but as a simple formula that, if you follow it, good things will come: 1. Programing, Programing, Programming Remember, programming is at the very essence of what the Knights are all about; it not only fulfills our charge of charity and service, but it demonstrates to the communities we serve who we are, what we believe in, and how we act upon those beliefs. We should always be looking for new programs, new ways to serve. If you haven t taken the opportunity to explore Supremes Building the Domestic Church initiative, please do so it offers a great blueprint of how Knights councils should consistently be working to make themselves more vital, more integrated to the faith communities they serve; and by doing so, evangelizing the Knights and our cause. 2. A Culture of Growth Every council, at every meeting, at every evert, wherever Brother Knights join together in service, should be talking and thinking membership not just in terms of quota and awards, but how increasing involvement by men in your parish benefits both them AND us. Do you any of you reading these words believe that the Knights have played a (Continued on page 2) CHARITY UNITY FRATERNITY PATRIOTISM

(Continued from page 1) pivotal role in your life as a Catholic man? Has it helped deepen your faith and commitment to our Church and all it stands for? If this is all true, then each of us as Knights have an obligation to share this life-changing experience with as many men as we can for their benefit and growth as Catholic men as well as growing and supporting our activities and causes. When Father McGiveny first conceived of our Order, it was truly a MOVEMENT of Catholic men; and it remains so today, waiting only for us to take our Order to new heights. 3. Inclusion Is the Key When councils are truly successful, they are successful together working together as a single unit, forging teams of men dedicated to important causes. We must always remember that no great achievements are achieved alone, and that while much of the work we participate in can at times be challenging, these task are made easier, even fun, if we always work together. Continue without fail to challenge your Brother Knights to serve; be tireless in asking for their assistance. Together we can all achieve greatness. Three simple rules strong and relevant programming; a dedication to bring Columbianism to the heart of every Catholic man, in every Catholic family; and making sure that we not only succeed, but succeed together in a common cause is the path to engagement, a path to assured success -- regardless of the activities you choose, the size of your parish, or how many Knights are members of your council. Choose to fully engage all, choose to work for success, and see what you can achieve! Again, thanks to all of you for continued efforts on behalf of the Knights of Columbus. May we all continue to strive to be the Knights that Father McGivney envisioned us to be strong in faith, dedicated to service, ever mindful of our families and may we do our upmost to make sure that our great movement continues to grow and offer its support to our Church, its teachings and precepts. In His Honor, Vivat Jesus! Think Your Too Old for Coverage? Maybe Not James Valent, FICF You are never too young or too old to consider purchasing life insurance. If you have a financial need for coverage, or will in the future, a permanent life Measure Up Larry Droesch, State Advocate HELP our friends with developmental disabilities We are closing in on the end of the 2017 Measure Up Campaign. There are many councils who have not sent in their donations, and several that gave last year but have not given this year. Our campaign can use a boost, so please check with your Grand Knight, Treasurer, and Measure Up Chairman to see if they sent in your insurance policy can be just the thing you need. When you are young and presumably healthy, coverage will be very inexpensive when compared to purchasing the same policies when you are older. If you ve put off purchasing coverage, or you realize that you may need additional insurance, the Order may still be able to help you, even if other companies cannot. In fact, in 2012, the issue age of our permanent life insurance products was extended to age 80, and in 2014, the issue age of our term insurance was extended to age 70. Naturally, your health, and whether or not you smoke, will be council's donation. ALL the proceeds go to organizations that help our friends with developmental disabilities - eighty percent goes to your local organization of choice and twenty percent goes to the State ARC and Special Olympics. They all need our HELP. We are extending the deadline a bit longer, so take action now. You can find the form on the State Website Measure_Up/2017_MU_FORM.pdf. taken into consideration, so underwriting standards for risk and age apply. But, the extensions are a great blessing for me and it could be for you too. Now I can help members that I couldn t help before. Are you or one of your brother knights one of those members? Whether you re 18 or 80, the Knights of Columbus has products that will work for you and your family. I look forward to discussing coverage with you. Vivat Jesus, James Valent, FICF

We pay homage to that beauty that surrounds us and marvel in Gods handiwork. We now realize that it s October and once again councils everywhere are executing their Blitz plan. The question that now must be asked is, is your council in solidarity with its sister council? Membership in the order is an honor that we bestow on members of our family, friends and brothers in the faith by invitation only. Has we execute our October blitz plan we must remember that it is our obligation to send out that invitation. My brother knights, Grand Knights, District Deputies, invite all to ask that simple question at every mass, program function, open house and chance encounter would like to join the Knights of Columbus? Many of you have done so in the previous months but your work is not done yet, I m asking you to continue grow the Order, document your progress and report your success. You can do this by providing counts of form 100 passed out and returned, and the same with prospect cards. (A form for documenting the above was ed to all Grand Knight on Sept ). Make sure that once you have the prospect cards in your possession that you follow up as soon as possible and invite them to an Admission degree. Post all admission degrees on the state website kofcohio.org whether it s DVD or team execution. After the admission degree has been executed submit your form 100 immediately and that it includes your council number and degree date. Remember that our new member is not fully enrolled unless recorded with Supreme Office. I must remind you, at this point that we have provided financial incentives to the individual proposer as well as the Grand Knight, council, and District Deputies. These incentives can be found in the In His Honor Program book given to Grand Knight on tour during the summer tour. %Gain Toward Ohio Goal (2250) % 90.00% 80.00% 70.00% 60.00% 50.00% 40.00% 30.00% 20.00% 10.00% 0.00% Cincinnati Cleveland Columbus Steubenville Toledo Youngstown Grand Total % YTD Gain % YTD Need Membership Numbers As of 10/5/2017

State General Programs Rod Anderson At the State Tour meetings in July, as we talked about the State General Program for this year, I discussed the famous line from the book made into the film, FIELD OF DREAMS: If you build it, they will come. This line highlights the importance of building Council Programs and Activities that are attractive to prosepective new Knights, as well as the current members. A good, active Council Youth Programs Stewart Vetter Many times we don t consider it a youth event unless it directly involves youth. Though I am a HUGE fan of Knights and councils being personally active with our youth, youth activities need only serve our youth to qualify. To highlight this point, I d like to tell you about a report I received and graded recently the involves serving our youth indirectly. Earlier this year, Brother Mark Hoffman of Saint Joseph of the Three Rivers council in the archdiocese of Cincinnati was called to service by FEMA to help flood victims in Texas. Soon after arriving in Texas, he remembered he was scheduled use council donated funds, in addition to his own money, to purchase and cook a meal at the Cincinnati Children s Hospital Ronald McDonald House. Ronald McDonald House provides a low-cost/no cost home away from home for parents and families of children undergoing medical treatment. Every evening individuals or organizations prepare a hot home-cooked meal for the guests at the house and often provide a caring ear and shoulder to parents in need. Brother Mark called on his Knights of Columbus brothers to fill in for him and serve the families at Ronald McDonald House. Eleven knights and 2 wives came together three days later with everything they needed to cook dinner and clean up afterwards. Sick children want their parents. They want to be comforted and protected especially when they are so young they don t understand what is causing their pain. What more could the Knights do for with activities in which men in the parish want to participate is bound to be successful in this October Membership Blitz month! To help promote really good, successful Program activities for your Council s membership recruiting efforts, the State Program Directors this month are providing articles in this issue of Voice of the Spirit highlighting some Program Activities they believe provide examples your Council can consider to help you attract and recruit new members. So take a look and consider how you may be able to adapt some of these activities to your Council and parish programs. these children than care for their parents so the parents can focus on their sick child? Easing the load on the parents by cooking and cleaning up, served and comforted the children. SQUIRES September 9 10, Danville St. Luke s circle 3676 hosted a 3-on-3 basketball tournament and leadership seminar. The three teams played round-robin style while State Chief Squire Seth Hinerman kept score and time. After the tournament, the squires and counselors On played a couple rounds of knock-out. After another fine meal by Jim Orecchio (thank you Jimmy!!), the state squires officers, with a small assist from the state director, taught the squires about planning And be sure to promote all that your Council s members do in the parish and community in furtherance of our ideals and goals, all in support of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. Your programs and activities are central to reaching those goals In HIS Honor. And remember, If you build it, they will come! an activity, properly presenting that activity at a meeting, and Robert s Rules of Order to control to operations of a meeting. We closed Sunday with mass. It s football time!!! Squires from all over Ohio will converge on Canton for the 4- on-4 flag football tournament at the Football Hall of Fame. The tournament will start after a tour of the Hall of Fame. There will also be an investiture Saturday afternoon/evening. Come on out and support our future brother Knights as they learn through competition. The first weekend in November, the squires take aim and fire as they play capture the flag with airsoft guns in Massillon. Counselors and chief squires need to get reservations in soon to ensure their spot. Observers are welcome. Watch next month s VOS or check out for more information. For December, we are encouraging circles to get involved with their sponsoring council to Keep Christ in Christmas or bring the joy of Christmas to those in need through a joint service project. The Lenten retreat has been scheduled for March 3-4 in Logan, Ohio. As such, I d like to see a HUGE turnout. Counselors and chief squires need to get this on the calendar NOW. Start advertising the retreat and planning attendance so we get as many squires there as possible. The largest retreat I ve ever seen or heard of was about 50 squires and counselors. I have faith we can beat that number with your help!! 6

Council Tim Mangan Brother Knights, at the tour meeting back in July one of the things I said was Keep doing the activities that are successful. What do I mean by successful? I am talking about the activities that are well attended and they help recruit new members into your council. A perfect example of this was done by Doug Jones from St. Jude Council Brother Doug recently submitted a report to me he called a Meet and Greet at Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH). This Council could provide food not only to a potential new member but also to some Culture of Life Brett Gissel members they have not seen in a while. Basically, they severed a meal and afterwards the grand knight spoked about how their council supports their parishes in the many ministries at Mass. This was followed by the deputy grand knight who spoked about the different service programs their council does to support the community, church, family and culture of life. Because of these presentations, the potential new member signed a Form 100 and will be (if he hasn t already) taking his Admission Degree real soon. This activity not only counts as a recruitment activity but also a retention activity as well. Whenever a council can reach out to members they have not heard from in a while and get them to show up and participate in an event or activity, that s retention! Kudos to Doug Jones and Council 3904 for doing just that! This activity may not have been anything unique or special but it was effective and successful! They just did it! That is why I encourage other councils to do the same thing. Remember, when your council is having an event, invite potential new members to it. You just may sign up a new member! Vivat Jesus! Tim Mangan State Council Director October is Respect Life Month. There are many things that we can do throughout the month that defend the right to life of every human being, from the moment of conception to natural death. Aside from the prayer services in front of abortion clinics that many groups do and are cited as a reason why many abortion clinics are closing, we can setup booths to inform and to show our support for those that choose life. In the early parts of the fraternal year, many parishes and counties hold festivals or fairs. While these are a great time to have fun, it is also an opportunity to show that we support life. There were six councils (968, 4168, 5286, 10820, 11355, and 16137) that reported having some sort of display at one of these events. The displays showing the development of a human being are powerful reminders that the child in the womb is alive. Whether your council staffs such a display or supports those doing the display, it is a worthwhile activity. You could also combine that with holding a collection for needed items of families choosing life. The display of the items collected would not only benefit those choosing life, but be an example of how we support families after they choose life. During the July/August reporting period, one council (14502) held a diaper drive. This is not a terribly difficult activity to do. It takes a few members to collect diapers from parishioners on their way into church. Then someone needs to take the diapers over to a pregnancy center (make sure to discuss with them in advance of the collection). Council collected 1,500 diapers, which is enough to help one family get through about 6 months without having to buy diapers. I know other councils hold drives during other parts of the year and have varying amounts collected. No matter the amount collected, you are helping support families that chose life with financial needs directly associated with their choice of life. Keep up the good work! Community Robert Walsh With three months into the fraternal year, how is your Community Program coming along? After the last reporting period only 71 councils have reported at least one program. Has your council reported yet? Council 505 Monsignor Linus J. Drury, found a need in the Zanesville area and has helped the Eastside Community Ministry with Lace-Up for Kids. This is a program that give shoes for kids that need them. With the help from area business and other help over the past 28 years 25,000 pairs of shoes have been distributed. Council 505 has been able to donate 36 pairs of shoes and a monetary donation to help the center reach their goal of 1,000 pairs of shoes. Council 505 found a need in the Zanesville area. These same needs are in your Community all it takes is to go out and find a program in need. 7

Family Tom Buehner Reminder: The mandatory Family Activity State Matching Funds participation with on-time turn-in report is due November 15! Please get the Matching Funds submitted to our State Advocate, Larry Droesch and submit your activity report to me on the State Website as soon as possible! Council #9788, St. Anthony of Padua, submitted a fantastic Family Activity called Dads Going the Distance. For this activity, the Knights of Council #9788 recognized the men who ran the 5K race with their school-aged children during their annual parish festival. The council felt these men are representing to their children and the community a great example of health and fitness balanced with their fatherly support of their families. These men were awarded with a certificate and a rosary pouch. Personally, I feel this is a great way to recognize fathers and their commitment to their family! Great job, Council #9788! Keep up the great work and recognition of fathers committed to their families! Please remember to take the time to submit your activities on the State website and reach out to me with any questions! Vivat Jesus! Tom Buehner State Family Director Matching Funds Larry Droesch, State Advocate Be Accountable and make a difference for Religious Education for our youth and parishes. YES! YOU can be accountable for helping donate funds for your local parish and dioceses religious education materials. YES! Your council or assembly's donation can provide books, AV, Social Media, brochures, teaching supplies, teaching materials, and many other things that will help promote and educate our youth and adults about our Catholic Faith! Just ask your brothers in your council if they want to make a difference in the lives of the parishioners and youth by educating them on the Catholic Religion and our belief in Jesus Christ our Savior? I am sure the answer will be a resounding YES! I WANT TO BE ACCOUNTABLE AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE. There is still time brothers. So the matching point of $25,000 has not been met as of now, so that means if you get your donation in now you can DOUBLE that amount. One hundred turns into 200, fifty turns into 100, twenty five turns into 50...and so on. The only thing standing in the way of making a difference for Religious Education is YOU and your accountability. I recommend you call your diocese Director of Religious Education (each diocese may use a different title) and ask them what they use your donation for. They will gladly tell you because they want you to know and share in the important job of educating and promoting our Faith in our Catholic Parishes and Dioceses. Duties of the District Deputy Tom Mathes As District Deputy you have all kinds of job duties. You are the one who drives membership in your district. The District Deputy is the one who makes sure First Degrees are held and on the web site and the 450 turned in. You are the person who works with the State Officer and Membership Director in you Diocese to make membership happen. You make sure all council forms are turned in and help the councils in any way you can. Also you help start new councils. As a District Deputy you are very important to Supreme and the State Council. We started out slow on membership but I know by working as a family and team we can get the job done. Thank You All For All You For the IHH Program. 8
