MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF THE OHIO STATE COUNCIL KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS DECEMBER 2017 State Deputy News and Notes Kevin Miller With the arrival of Advent and the coming of the Christmas season, we are all looking forward to spending time with our families and friends as we celebrate this very special time in the life of our Church the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ, our longawaited Savior. It is also a time when those less fortunate than ourselves are foremost in our minds; when, as Christians, we try to find ways to answer indifference and selfishness with caring and charity. For Knights, this is an especially important season, for it affords us the best opportunity to live out the lives of charity and service we dedicated ourselves to when we joined the Order. As I write these words, councils and Knights across Ohio and around the world are engaged in projects and activates that demonstrate the very best of what the Knights are and what we always aspire to be. Supremesupported events such as Coats for Kids and Food for Families are just a small example of how we as Knights are showing our support for our parishes, our faith, and those less fortunate than ourselves. Though our efforts, we inspire others, both within and outside of our Order, to give greater consideration to the importance of true charity and its tremendous impact on the lives of others. This is a time that every Knight should take great pride in their membership; it is also a important time for us to show gratitude to every Knight for their important contribution to our mission. Whether as an officer, a director, or just a member who due to outside commitments have little time to do more than just pay their annual dues, all are good Catholic gentleman who enrich and contribute to our ranks -- and strongly believe in what Knights do and what we represent. (Continued on page 2) CHARITY UNITY FRATERNITY PATRIOTISM
(Continued from page 1) I thank each and every one of you for your dedication and passion in the cause of Columbianism and all it has come to represent On behalf of the officers, directors and staff of the Ohio State Council, I extend to all of you and your families the best wishes for this Advent and Christmas Season, and my hope that all of us will enjoy and happy, fulfilling, and productive New Year! With fraternity, in unity, and for charity, in His honor, Vivat Jesus! Kevin Miller State Deputy Chad Osterholt, General Agent Are you interested in a career of service and unrestricted earning potential? What if you could enjoy professional independence without the risk of going it alone? Can you see yourself working for a mission-oriented organization that you already belong to and which is fiercely loyal to its principles and members? Then consider a career as a Knights of Columbus field agent. Being an agent for the Knights of Columbus is not like being a typical salesman. On your very first day as an agent, you will be assigned an exclusive territory of hundreds of Knights of Columbus families. You won t need to start from scratch. And since all of your clients will be Knights or their family members, you will be welcomed as a brother, not as a stranger. Knights of Columbus agents use proven techniques to grow their business and be successful. As a new agent, you will learn those techniques through an extensive training and support system that includes agent mentoring, classroom learning and the Knights of Columbus Online University. Our pre-contract program allows you to engage in real sales situations with veteran agents, helping you to understand an agent s day-to-day work and determine if it is the right career for you. Knights of Columbus field agents are in business for themselves but not by themselves. Agents love the flexibility that allows them to plan their time to be there for family events. They also love working in regional teams and learning from their fellow agents. As a Knights of Columbus agent, you will have all of the perks of independence without having to go it alone. The Knights of Columbus is unique. It s not your typical life insurance company. It is both one of the largest life insurers in North America and one of the largest donors to charitable causes. It is a proud Catholic company that puts values above profit, earning the respect of its members as well as the insurance industry. When you work for the Knights of Columbus, you won t need to check your principles at the door you can carry them with you. Our field agents not only help safeguard the financial futures of Catholic families in their communities, they also work closely with their councils to help them increase their charitable impact. This is a unique opportunity. It combines service, professionalism, independence and brotherhood in ways that no other opportunity can. Its potential is limitless and so is its promise. To learn more about a career opportunity with the Knights of Columbus, contact your local General Agent, Chad Osterholt (419) Jeff Hearty (216) Patrick Murphy (513) James Valent (740) Dave Roberts (330)
State Membership Frank Iannaggi On November 28, 2017 we extended the promissory note membership incentive to December and January. Bring in 4 new members during the months of December and January and collect $100 for your council. (numbers verified March 1 Supreme report). Supreme Council has implemented incentives for all council active directive for both Councils and District Deputies Here is how it works: The grand knight of every council who recruits one or more new members between December 1 and February 28, 2018 will receive a portrait of the Holy Family. If the council did not recruit any new members during the fraternal year, and/or the council has not recruited any new members as of December 1, 2017, the grand knight, deputy grand knight, financial secretary, chancellor, treasurer and warden will each receive the Holy Family portrait.: District deputies, whose districts contain 75% active councils or greater recruiting at least one new member by February 28, 2018, will receive a portrait of the Holy Family. Growing the order begins with strong faith filled families, to illustrate this our Supreme Knight announced at the Mid- Year Meeting of State Deputies lottery incentive for 10 couples to attend the World Meeting of Families in Dublin, Ireland with all expenses paid. Here s how it works: beginning December 1st, 2017, every time that you recruit a member into the Order through June 30th, 2018, your name will go into a drawing and on July 1st, 2018, ten names will be drawn at random. If you are a winner, we will notify you and your wife immediately, so you can plan this once in a lifetime opportunity to interact with families from all over the world. When you return, you can become a beacon of light for other families in your council, community, and state. The more men that you recruit, the greater the probability you will have to win this trip. So please communicate this incentive to all your council members so that they can have the chance to win this experience of a lifetime. For more information on the World meeting of Families 2018, please visit: Our intake of new members as been slowly climbing through the efforts of many knights sharing their love of our Order. During this Advent season let us all make the effort of asking our brothers in the faith to join our Order and share in the many great works that are the highlight of this season of waiting for our Savior s birth. Please take advantage of the incentives outlined above and both State and Supreme and revel in the achievement of 100% active council statewide participation. Please review the statistics below and note that we are nearly 500 members short of our midyear goal of We can and will achieve our goals if will all share in the labor of the harvest IN HIS HONOR. A very blessed Christmas to all our Brother Knights and your Families.
General Programs Rod Anderson HALF WAY POINT! December, last month of the year, marks the half way point of the fraternal year for the Knights of Columbus. What a good time to enjoy friends, family, and Brothers at Christmas parties, gatherings, social and religious events of every kind. But it is also time to reflect on where we have been and what we have accomplished over the past 6 months, and what remains to be done this fraternal year. After all, you have only until April 15 to wrap up your Council s participation in the IN HIS HONOR State Program and until June 30 to complete the requirements for Star Council. So it is a good time to do the next step in your Council Program Planning for this year. Plan to have a meeting of your key Council Officers and Program Chairmen shortly after the first of the year to review and evaluate your Council Program Activities conducted so far. Evaluate what worked and what didn t, what went according to plan, and what went according to plan, and what needs improvements. As you review all the Council activities of the last 6 months, include an honest evaluation of them, and what needs to be done to insure the success of future activities. As you go through this review and evaluation, discuss and finalize the plans for the Council s programs and activities over the next 3 and 6 months. With the State Program rapidly coming to a close after the first of the year, it is critical that your Council make sure it is doing everything it can to meet its goals. Deadlines for submission of Supreme and State forms and reports loom large in the first 3 and a half months of 2018, and are key to a successful year IN HIS HONOR. And as always, the State Program Directors and Staff are here to do anything we can to assist your Council to be as successful as it can be in charity, unity and fraternity for your Brother Knights, parishes, communities and the Catholic Church. Please let us know how we can help! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all! And always remember If you build it, they will come! Church Mike Nau The Church program consists of two mandatory programs. They are: 1-Chaplain of the Year or Religious of the Year, 2-SOS with final turn-in post marked not later than April 15. Then the Council can submit 3 choices. These 3 choices are any program that helps the priest or the Church community. We are coming to the end of the first six months of the fraternal year. I have seen a lot of great programs throughout the great State Of Ohio. Many councils are doing great things helping their Priest and Church community. The SOS program is gaining speed, as many councils have submitted reports that show several dollars going to help our seminarians. During this Holiday season please remember to help the seminarians with prayers as well as financial help. What better way to show that the Knights care than to help these young men with expenses. Please make sure that you take the time to report the great work that your council does to help our future priests. As we get closer to the Holiday season let s not forget to Keep Christ in Christmas. Christ is the reason for the season. We as Knights must not be afraid to tell and show others that Christ is the reason to celebrate. And as we approach Christmas let s not forget to help those in need. God Bless you all and I hope you all have A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Let s do great things In His Honor. Community Robert Walsh With just a little over three months left in the fraternal year, how is your Community program doing? Do you have the three council choice programs? Are you gearing up for the Super Cash Bonanza Charity Raffle Tickets sale, or do you have a Volunteer and or Blue Coat of the Year in mind? Have you considered the Wheelchair Mission from Supreme? This program is easy to do, just check out the requirements from Supreme. There is still plenty of opportunities to help out our active and nonactive military. And do not forget the veterans in the hospital. There is always a need for food, remember to continue your donations to your local pantries. As it gets colder maybe set a call list to check on those in need. From my Family to Yours, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Family Tom Buehner The mandatory Family Activity State Matching Funds participation with on-time turn-in was due November 15. If you sent your Matching Funds in to our State Advocate, Larry Droesch, please don t forget to also submit your activity report to me on the State Website to get credit for it toward the State Program. Please continue to think about your Family of the Year and get the nominations in to me by April 1, This is a mandatory activity for the State Program, and I want you to be able to max out the State Program! Please remember to take the time to submit your activities on the State website and reach out to me with any questions! Have a Merry Christmas! 4
Council Tim Mangan Brother Knights, as you know, it is better to give than to receive. We as Knights of Columbus are constantly giving both our time and talents to make a difference, especially during this time of year. Whether your council is hosting a Christmas party, lighting up a Christmas Tree, putting up a nativity scene or doing their part to Keep Christ in Christmas, it all matters! As we say good bye to 2017, we finish the year off strong! Speaking of making a difference, one of Culture of Life Brett Gissel As Catholic men we have a great role model St. Joseph. Although it is the yes of Mary that allows Our Lord to come into this world as a human, Joseph played a part too. Without Joseph, Mary would have had a difficult time, if not impossible considering the laws of the time, raising Jesus. Joseph, as foster father of Jesus, eased the burden of Mary as Mother Of God. I ask that you and your councils look for the face of Jesus in your charitable work and especially consider the sacrifice of Joseph in helping ease the burden of women that choose life as he saw the face of Jesus in every sacrifice he made as foster father. Have a Happy Christmas and a Blessed New Year! the most special program activities your council can do is get involved with the Special Olympics. The Special Olympics is a unique way for you as a Knight to help and enjoy a very rewarding and satisfying experience. If your council was involved with the Special Olympics, your work is not done yet! As a reminder, if your council has raised at least $2,000 and contributed at least 200 man hours for Special Olympics, then your council qualifies for the Supreme Special Olympics Program! However, you must report it by filling out and submitting the Partnership Profile Report with Special Olympics Form #4584. This form can be found online at Youth Stewart Vetter Last month I wrote about what you could do in January. I hope you have all planned your Free Throw Championships by now and I wish you luck. The best advice I can offer is keep it professional and make it fun. kofc.org/forms and it is due at Supreme not later than January 31st! After you have filled out this form, save a copy of it! Then when you are doing your online report on the state website, attached a copy of it so I can view it and give you credit. Remember, this activity will fulfill all four Activities requirements for the Columbian Award in the Council Program category and max out your council choice activities for your State Program Council Activities as well! In closing, I want to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! God Bless! I should write about things you can do and try to motivate you to be active with youth in your parish and community. Instead, I d like to encourage you to spend Advent and Christmas with the youth in your life and make some memories. We all get SO wrapped up every year in parties, shopping, planning, wrapping, and the things we are told are important. Make this year different. I d like to encourage you to concentrate on spending time with your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and any other children in your life. Have REAL conversations with them. Tell them what Christmas was like when you were a kid. Google with them a toy that you wanted back then. When they give you their 30-volume wish list, pick an item and ask them why they want it and what makes it cool. Hug them often. I d also like to encourage you to take a moment, step back and think remember this moment. If you literally think it, it will impress it that much more into your mind. Close your eyes and remember the sounds and the smells. The best time to do this is when everything is hectic and you are about to get frustrated. Take that moment, right then, and make a memory. When your eyes open, you will appreciate the people around you SO much. This is your mission, brothers. Love the youth in your life. Spend time appreciating them and teaching them to appreciate the TRUE meaning of Christmas. Make memories with the youth you love. Happy advent and Merry Christmas!! 5
