1 KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS JULY Monthly Publication of the Ohio State Council Brother Knights, Our theme, Through Him, With Him, In Him, is taken from the Ordinary of the Mass. It is that time of the mass when we give everything back to God the Father through His Son Jesus Christ. A firm commitment to these six simple words will set the tone for a new found faith, a stronger catholic family and an unshakeable church. We do realize that simple words alone do not make a program successful. It will be the love of God on fire within our hearts and souls that will make this theme take life. It will start with the performance of every act of charity uniting ourselves as a single brotherhood across this great State of Ohio, all for the honor and glory of God. We cannot afford to take a single moment or opportunity for granted. The focus must be a renewed effort dedicating our lives and actions to the Almighty Father. Our theme, our mission statement, our state program are all faith based and focused on our efforts as Knights of Columbus to work through our parishes and reach out to the community, our families and our youth. It will take a supreme effort of dedication from everyone working to give everything back to God and truly become successful as a Knight, a Council, and a Brotherhood. We must continue to remain the visible leadership within the Catholic Community. Through Him, With Him, In Him, we hear it every time when we attend the sacrifice of the mass.

2 ABOUT OHIO STATE COUNCIL (Continued from page 1) Take every opportunity to say this simple phrase with the celebrant and confirm your undying dedication as a catholic gentleman and a Knight of Columbus to give back all we have, all we are, and all we can be for the honor and glory of God. 3 SILVER ROSE 2015 Rev. Edward J. Janoch, State Chaplain STATE CHAPLAIN An early Pro-Life advertisement stated: LIFE: What a beautiful gift. This truth is still valid today for it is an objective moral truth. Human life is a gift; a gift from God. The Knights of Columbus has always been a defender of all human life from its beginning at the time of conception to its ending at the time of a natural death. It is no surprise that the Knights of Columbus would have an important role to play in the conception of the Silver Rose Program. The Ohio State Council has made this year s running of the Silver Rose a priority. It is only fitting that one of the first projects for the new Ohio State Council is to involve the promotion of LIFE. It is one of my priorities as the State Chaplain to promote all issues pertaining to LIFE. I am asking that the Knights of Columbus in each of the six dioceses to hold daily some type of liturgical service with the Silver Rose whether presented in the diocesan cathedral, parish church, Eucharistic Chapel or in some place in which the faithful can have to opportunity to have some time for private prayer and for a public liturgical activity. This could be a Mass, Eucharistic Adoration with Benediction, the Knights of Columbus prayer service or any other liturgically approved and worthy expression for the Sanctity of LIFE. The following is from the Supreme Knights of Columbus website explaining the History and the 2015 Silver Rose Program. I have also provided information on the 2015 Silver Rose Route 4 which will include the State of Ohio and our schedule for the Silver Rose in Ohio. The History of the Silver Rose Our Lady of Guadalupe had done so much for her people in Mexico that, in 1960, the Columbian Squires, the official youth organization of the Knights of Columbus, wanted to give something back to her. The group, headed by Brother Miguel Martinez Estrada, Grand Knight Andreas Saucedo and Fray Margil De Jesus of Knights of Columbus Nuestra Senora de Monterrey Council 2312 in Monterrey, Mexico, came up with the idea of running a rose to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey, Mexico. The Squires were so enthused that they wanted to invite other Squires from two other countries on the North American Continent to participate. They called on Squires from Laredo, Texas, and London, Ontario. The Canadian Squires asked to start the relay running of the Rose from there through the United States and finishing up in Mexico. Bishop John C. Cody of London blessed the first rose. It was then flown to New York where it was received by Grand Knight Joseph Thomasen, who in turn took it to Supreme Knight Luke E. Hart. Mr. Hart then took the Rose to Dallas, Texas, and delivered it to district officers of the state of Texas. Texas State Deputy Jack Collerin received the Rose and took it to Laredo, Texas, where it was given to the Squires from Monterrey, Mexico, at the International Bridge in Laredo. They ran the Rose from the International Bridge to Monterrey through Sabinas Hidalgo N.L. Mexico to Cienega de Flores and on to the Basilica in Monterrey, Mexico on December 12, The first rose was a natural rose, and after a year it had decomposed. The Squires were so full of inspiration they decided to make yet another relay run in 1961, but due to the condition of the Rose it could not be used again. After contacting Grand Knight Arthur Mount at Council 1134, Reverend Edward Gatfield (FatherTed) and Bishop John C. Cody decided to make a bronze rose and sent it to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in (Continued on page 4) 3 VOICE OF THE SPIRIT JULY

4 STATE CHAPLAIN (Continued from page 3) Monterrey, Mexico. When Fray Antonio de Jesus Sacedon and the Squires of Circle 660 in Monterrey heard of the bronze rose, they decided to call upon Brother Miguel Martinez Montoya (owner of Joyeria Rosine) in Monterrey to make them a similar rose. The idea was to make a silver rose because silver is one of Mexico s precious metals. The jeweler saw a beautiful bed of roses in a garden owned by Mrs. Shirla Ostwowk. He asked if he could have a rose as a model for the making of the Silver Rose. Mr. Montoya explained what had happened to the original rose in 1960 and what Canada was doing for Our Lady in Monterrey. Once she heard about the making of the Silver Rose she gladly gave him a rose and the stem to which it was attached. The rose bush from which the rose was removed was called Rose of Peace. The first Silver Rose was blessed by Bishop Alfonso Espino Silva. It was sent to New Haven to William L. Piedmont, Director of Fraternal Services at the Supreme Council Office. The Bronze Rose was blessed by Bishop Cody. It was received by Supreme Knight Luke E. Hart. Archbishop Francis J. Spellman of New York so admired both roses he kept them for a special Mass before they were flown to Texas. Texas State Deputy Jack Collerin, State Secretary Ed Gunter and Grand Knight Scott Grant of Fort Worth sent the roses on to Laredo. Laredo Council 2304 received the roses and turned them over to brother Knights from at the midpoint of the International Bridge. Brothers Louis G. Alanis received the Silver Rose and Brother Enrique Garcia received the Bronze Rose. Again the roses were taken to Sabinas Hidago and Cienega de Flores and on to Monterrey. This tradition symbolizes unity and especially the international brotherhood that has been jointly nurtured three countries. After 1961, the program was conducted by the Knights of Texas and Mexico and the Our Lady of Guadalupe Province of the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus until the mid-1990s, when it was adopted as a Supreme Council program which grew to encompass three Silver Rose Routes Today four roses are run along different North American routes from Canada to México through 38 U.S. states and five Canadian provinces before meeting in Laredo, Texas. In 2013, there are five roses traveling simultaneously. The fifth rose travels through New England and ends its journey on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Dec. 12 at St. Mary s Church in New Haven, the birth place of the Knights of Columbus. A sixth route was added in 2014 and is part of the 2015 program. The 2015 Silver Rose Program Beginning in April 2015, six Silver Roses will begin their journey across North America, from Canada to the United States to Mexico. The 2015 Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose - One Life, One Rose Program will conclude on December 12, 2015 on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas, at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey, Mexico marks the 55th year of the program which began in 1960 as a project of the Columbian Squires of North America to honor the Blessed Virgin under her title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the (Continued on page 5) 4 VOICE OF THE SPIRIT JULY

5 STATE CHAPLAIN (Continued from page 4) Americas. The program has continued since then as a project of Columbian Squires circles, councils and Fourth Degree assemblies in several jurisdictions. In 2001 Supreme Knight Carl Anderson expanded the program by beginning the "Running of the Rose" from the 119th Annual Meeting of the Supreme Council in Toronto. This is "a perfect program for the Knights of Columbus," said Supreme Knight Anderson. "Through it we honor not only Our Lady of Guadalupe and express the unity of the Order, but we also reaffirm the Order's dedication to the sanctity of human life. It is to the Blessed Mother that we turn in prayer as we work to end the Culture of Death that grips our society. As we think in terms of 'One Life, One Rose,' it is most appropriate that we turn to Our Lady of Guadalupe who made known her will through Juan Diego and the miracle of the roses." Today six Silver Roses travel through North America exemplifying Knights of Columbus devotion to Our Lady and commitment to the Culture of Life. In 2015, one Rose begins in British Columbia and heads south along the Pacific coast before turning east on a winding path through the southwest and mountain states before reaching Texas. A second Rose starts in Alberta and heads east to Saskatchewan before entering the United States in North Dakota and travelling through the northern US Rockies and the Great Plains on its way toward Texas. A third Rose starts its run in Manitoba, moving south through the central United States and along the Mississippi before turning to Texas. A fourth Rose begins its journey in Ontario moving through the Midwest [including Ohio] and some of the Mid- Atlantic States before ending in Washington, D.C. A fifth Rose begins in Virginia and journeys throughout the south on its way to Texas. A sixth Rose starts in New Brunswick and travels throughout the northeast, completing its journey in Connecticut. The program ends on December 12, 2015, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. 7 SERVICE PROGRAMS GENERAL PROGRAM DIRECTOR Robert Walsh Greetings Brother Knights from this great State of Ohio, and welcome to this new Fraternal Year, with our State Deputy Robert Collins. Our program Through Him, With Him, In Him is designed to help your Council to participate and excel. We have made some updates to the program, and have kept some programs that everyone enjoys doing. To begin the year please get your Council officers form #185 into Supreme, the State Deputy, and your District Deputy. Also, make sure to turn in your form #365, for your Activity Directors, this helps Supreme send information to them that can help run their programs. Remember that your semi-annual audit #1295 is soon due. All these forms are part of the Administration portion of the State Program. On page 29 of the program book is the matrix for all the programs, please look over these activities and then have your Program Director read the description of the activity. This would be a good time to plan out your year so that you can keep track of all your activities. Once again the Supreme programs are being highlighted and will max out the program if you complete the Supreme requirements. We encourage your Council to work toward achieving the Star Council Award. This will help bring in new members and encourage the Council members to participate in the programs. I would like to see every Council make Star Council this fraternal year. The Through Him, With Him, In Him program will strengthen your Council members in their Faith, and in working with other Council members. Remember to have fun with the activities and report what you do. CULTURE OF LIFE Gary Anderson It is with great pleasure that we unveil the new, updated Culture of Life Activities Program in our great state of Ohio, as an integral part of State Deputy Bob Collins' "Through Him, With Him, In Him" general program. As our Lord admonished us to be that shining light upon the hill, this is once again our opportunity to shine a light upon the sanctity of human life across its entire spectrum-from conception to natural death-and to defend the most innocent and defenseless of our brothers and sisters. The Culture of Life program is being expanded to include such critically important areas of focus as Religious Freedom, Marriage, and Teen Chastity, all now under savage attack. 8 SERVICE PROGRAMS (Continued from page 7) up for our religious liberties, or safe guarding the purity and innocence of our youth. As St. John Paul II declared, we brother knights continue to wield the power of our strong right arm of the Church in defending these most cherished ideals. Your newly revised, expanded, and topical State Culture of Life Activities program will provide the framework to guide you and your council in doing just that. Looking ahead on the calendar, now would be a great time for your council to begin planning for the National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children (Activity #50) on September 12 and the fall 40 Days for Life campaign (Activity #47), which runs from September 23 to November 1. And let's not forget the critically important Ultrasound Initiative campaign (Activity #45) through which we supply free, life-saving ultrasound machines to qualified pregnancy care centers. Please keep your eyes and ears constantly on watch for such centers in need of a machine. CHURCH Jeff Kiliany As we begin this new Fraternal Year, it is always a good practice to look forward and tentatively plan your council s activities for the upcoming year. As part of the Through Him, With Him, In Him State Program, the Church Program offers numerous suggestions to help tend to the Spiritual needs of you council s membership. As are part of a CATHOLIC men s organization, we should plan activities that stress and nurture our Faith as Catholic gentlemen. Activity # 2, Religious Devotions, and Activity #5, Deepen Our Faith have several suggested activities that do just that. Please call or with any questions. I will be happy to assist you and your council. VOCATIONS Joe Mackos We mas men of faith are called through Baptism to grow and increase in faith. We are thereby summoned to serve as witnesses to that faith in our daily lives, in the lives of our families, and in the lives of others throughout our communities. A Vocation is a calling from God. We as brother knights have always been supportive of our programs for vocations. Council will have options to do a variety of programs to support vocations. RSVP (Financial Assistance to Seminarians and Religious) a council donations $ then after the check is cashed copy it and along with form 2863 send it to supreme. For each $ you donate supreme will reimburse your council $ up to a total of $ per year. Support our Sisters and Nuns this is a new program for this year. These ladies have taken a vow to serve God, lets look back to Mother Teresa, she never asked for herself, but for others. It s time we start taking care of the Sisters and Nuns within our areas. Last the Round Table at the District Deputy meeting in Columbus this weekend June 27 th & 28 th. FAMILY Stewart Vetter Venerable Fr. Michael J. McGivney saw families torn apart by the dangers of the industrial revolution and founded the Knights of Columbus to protect those families. Thankfully few of us can expect to have our lives cut short through dangers at work but that doesn t mean families don t still need protected. Social media is the collective of online communications channels dedicated to community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration. Websites and applications dedicated to forums, social networking, social bookmarking, and wikis are among the different types of social media. So, why does the Ohio State Council want to use social media? Basically, social media is a way to connect on a different level with our current and potential members. Building relationships are super important and bring us an edge when it comes to showing all the good things that we do in the name of Jesus Christ.
