4 A rosebud welcomes Penelope Aleyn Dobson, born May 31. Great-grandmother is Molly Dobson. TODAY S WORSHIP Worship is at 8:00 a.m. in Monteith Hall, and at 9:30 a.m. in the Sanctuary. The worship service is broadcast over the radio at 11:00 a.m., on WAAM (1600 AM), and on the station s website, Sunday School classes are held for crib through fifth graders at 9:30 a.m. Pentecost, a great festival Sunday of the Christian church, is 50 days after Easter. It commemorates the gift of the Holy Spirit, descending upon the disciples gathered in Jerusalem. Red is the color of Pentecost, pointing to the flames, as of fire, described in the second chapter of The Acts of the Apostles. The dove also is a symbol of Pentecost. Empowered by the Spirit, the disciples take the gospel from Jerusalem into all the world, so Pentecost sometimes is referred to as the birthday of the church. The Pentecost Offering is received today. This annual PCUSA offering supports children at risk, youth, and young adult programs. Forty percent of this offering stays here to support First Pres Campus Ministry. Please refer to the insert in today s bulletin for more information. Checks may be made payable to First Pres with a Pentecost Offering notation in the memo line. Special envelopes are available for your use. The geraniums filling the Sanctuary today are a beautiful reminder of the joy and love that flows through the First Pres family. The Deacons ask that members help them spread some of that joy. If you wish, please take a geranium after the service today and share it with someone you know who could use a lift. We hope to reach out to non-members to let them know someone is thinking about them. There will be cards to take with the geraniums to let the recipient know that someone at First Pres thinks they are special. Our high school graduates are recognized during the 9:30 a.m. service. The doors to the Social Hall will open at 11:00 a.m. Food will be served until 12:00 p.m. Our menu is mostly provided by Satchel s BBQ in Ann Arbor, and includes barbecue pork and chicken, buns, coleslaw, macaroni and cheese, baked beans (includes meat), chips, popsicles, and cake. The cost for the meal is $7 per person, or maximum $25 per family. Please make your way into the Social Hall by the designated entrances, and exit from the Social Hall to the narthex. You will find drinks on tables outside in front of the Sanctuary. If you desire assistance getting food and drinks, there will be runners at the food tables ready to help you. (Some tables will be available in the Social Hall.) Please be mindful of the inflatables, and the live animals, and support the volunteers who are directing those areas. The Chief Officers Blues is on the terrace, and will play until 12:15. Have a wonderful time, welcome our guests, and make some new friends! ANNOUNCEMENTS A memorial service for Lorrayne Mulder, was held in the Nave last Thursday, June 5. The 221st General Assembly (2014) convenes with Worship and Communion this Saturday, June 14, at 11:00 a.m., in Detroit at Cobo Hall. Many members from First Pres will sing with the choir. All are welcome to attend. Next Sunday, June 15, the Rev. Neal Presa, Moderator of the 220th General Assembly, will preach at our 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. worship services. We will be joined in our 11:00 a.m. worship by guests attending the General Assembly. Mature Singles meet for dinner this Friday, June 13, at 5:30 p.m., at Panda House, 229 N. Maple Road. Arbor Hospice Tour, sponsored by Stephen Ministry Continuing Education, is tomorrow, June 9, at 7:00 p.m. at Arbor Hospice, 2366 Oak Valley Drive, Ann Arbor. Diane Smith, Chaplain of Arbor Hospice, will be our guide. Come learn about our local hospice program and tour the facility. All are welcome but reservations are required. 6 Volunteer for the 2014 School Supplies for the Philippines Project. Volunteers are needed for June 26, 27, and 28 to sort, inventory, and pack donated school supplies and books for the Philippines. Plan to come one, two, or all three days and for as many hours as you are able between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at the Rezmierskis house, 1050 Elmwood Drive. In addition to the Philippines, books and supplies will be sent to Ghana and to local community centers in Ann Arbor and Detroit. Come for fellowship, work, and snacks. This is fun work and a wonderful way to keep valuable materials out of the landfills and put them into the hands of eager teachers and students. We are in the process of updating our church directory. If your contact information is not correct as currently listed, please the corrections to Linda Robinson, Office Manager, lrobinson@firstpresbyterian. org, by this Friday, June 13. We expect to have the revised directory ready for distribution the first Sunday in July. Light in the darkness. Rev. If you would be willing to serve as an usher for a service this summer (9:30 or 11:00 a.m.), please sign up on our website. Volunteers are needed for outdoor summer worship Sundays. A team of eight volunteers is needed for each of the six outdoor summer worship Sundays to set up and take down chairs and small tables.
