1 NOVEMBER 23, 2014 CHRIST THE KING SUNDAY THE CHURCH AT WORSHIP 8:00, 9:30, and 11:00 a.m. Gathering VOLUNTARY Eine Kleine Nachtmusik: Allegro W. A. Mozart arr. Merle Isaac LIFE IN THE CHURCH Rev. Dr. Monnett (8:00) Rev. Rogers (9:30) Rev. Conrad (11:00) FAITH IN ACTION Gift of the Magi and the Christmas Dinner Diane Hockett (8:00) Nancy Oliver (9:30) Holly Majorprice (11:00) CALL TO WORSHIP One: The Lord is a great God who says, I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. All: The Lord is God. We are God s people and the sheep of God s pasture. One: Let us come into God s presence singing, Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty! All: We praise the One who was, who is, and who is to come. * HYMN 144 Alleluia! Sing to Jesus! hyfrydol PRAYER OF CONFESSION Righteous God, you have crowned Jesus Christ as Lord of all. We confess that we have not bowed before him, and are slow to acknowledge his rule. We give allegiance to the powers of this world, and fail to be governed by justice and love. In your mercy, forgive us. Raise us to acclaim him as ruler of all, that we may be loyal ambassadors, obeying the commands of our Lord Jesus Christ. SILENT CONFESSION ASSURANCE OF GOD S FORGIVENESS
2 * PASSING OF THE PEACE You are invited to share signs with one another of the peace we experience as forgiven people. Greet one another saying, The peace of Christ be with you, and respond, And also with you. * GLORIA PATRI Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen. Proclaiming PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Rudi Ansbacher (8:00) Harry Bowen (9:30) Jan Leckrone (11:00) NEW TESTAMENT READING Matthew 25:31-46 This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. ANTHEM (9:30/11:00) Consider the Lilies A. Laurence Lyon Consider the lilies of the field; how they grow, how they grow. Consider the birds in the sky; how they fly, how they fly. He clothes the lilies of the field, He feeds the birds in the sky, And He will feed those who trust Him and guide them with His eye. Consider the sheep of His fold, how they follow where He leads. Tho the path may wind across the mountains, He knows the meadows where they feed. He clothes the lilies of the field, He feeds the birds in the sky, And He will feed those who love Him, and guide them with His eye. Consider the sweet tender children who must suffer on this earth; The pains of all of them He carried from the day of His birth. He clothes the lilies of the field, He feeds the lambs of His fold. And He will heal those who trust Him, and make their hearts as gold. A CONVERSATION WITH YOUNG DISCIPLES (9:30/11:00) Rev. Rodawla (11:00) Children through grade five are invited forward. OLD TESTAMENT READING Ezekiel 34:11-16 This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SERMON Rev. Riegel (8:00) What Kind of King? Rev. Dr. Fair (9:30/11:00)
3 Responding * AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from A Declaration of Faith The coming of Jesus was itself the coming of God s promised rule. Through his birth, life, death, and resurrection, he brings about the relationship between God and humanity that God always intended. Jesus was God in the flesh. Jesus Christ overthrew evil powers that enslaved and degraded people, yet he made no use of power to protect himself. Jesus taught with authority, challenging many time-honored customs and ideas, yet he submitted to humiliation and death without a word on his own behalf. We recognize the work of God in Jesus power and authority. We also recognize the work of God in Jesus lowliness. In both his majesty and lowliness Jesus is the eternal Son of God, God himself with us. * HYMN 171 The King of Love My Shepherd Is st. columba WELCOME Rev. Sanderford (9:30) Rev. Roederer (11:00) Please sign the Friendship Pad and pass it to others sitting nearby. OFFERING OF TITHES AND GIFTS Offertory (9:30/11:00) Rejoice, the Lord Is King Malcolm Archer Rejoice, the Lord is King: Your Lord and King adore! Mortals, give thanks and sing, and triumph evermore. Lift up your heart, lift up your voice! Rejoice, again I say, rejoice! Jesus, the Savior, reigns, the God of truth and love; When He had purged our stains, he took his seat above; Lift up your heart, lift up your voice! Rejoice, again I say, rejoice! His kingdom cannot fail, he rules o er earth and heaven; The keys to death and hell are to our Jesus giv n: Lift up your heart, lift up your voice! Rejoice, again I say, rejoice! Text by Charles Wesley * Doxology Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. * Prayer of Dedication SACRAMENT OF COMMUNION (8:00) See Communion Liturgy Card
4 PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. * HYMN 142 All Hail the Power of Jesus Name! coronation * CHARGE AND BENEDICTION Sending * CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE O that with yonder sacred throng we at His feet may fall!
