Baptists poised to pick.. i4 new leader Fundamentalists select Gastonia minister to head unexpected opposition By Tricia Robertson Gazette Slaff Reporter 1really do believe the great majority of Southern Baptists in North Carolina are theologically conservative, and for that reason, they ought to be represented by a theological conservative.. The Rev..Ned Mathews Park wood Baptist Church pastor CHARLOTTE- A Gastonia minister was to find out today whether he would be the new president of the N.C. Baptist State Convention. The Rev. Ned Mathews, pastor of Parkwood Baptist Church, is one of two candidates running for the office. Charlotte lawyer Bill Poe, the convention's second vice president and former chairman of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education, is the other. Voting was to take place late this morning. Both Poe and Mathews view themselves as conservative and until recently Poe was expected to be unopposed for the presidency. However, some fundamentalists said Poe was too liberal and nominated Mathews to replace two-term president Norman Wiggins. If elected, Mathews said, he would emphasize growth in the church through evangelical programs - something Parkwood, with 1,350 members, is noted for. "The Baptist Convention is the largest Protestant group in the counp try and it got there through strong local evangelism," he said. The state convention has about 3,500 churches and membership in many of those has reached a plateau or is declining. Mathews said he wants to stimulate growth and "to get these churches really moving. " He would place more emphasis on Sunday school. Mathews said he believes the key to growth lies in Sunday school programs. I i "Mainly, it's a leadership attitude," Mathews said. He believes his conservative philosophy is consistent with that of most Southern Baptists. "I really do believe the great majority of Southern Baptists in North. Carolina are theologically conservative, and for that reason, they ought' to be represented by a theological conservative," said Mathews. Poe said that while he is not a fundamentalist, he considers himself on the conservative side of the moderate faction. "I believe the Bible from cover to cover," he said. "I believe in the inerrancy of the original revelation of God to man. I do not believe in the inerrancy of every word and punctuation mark in the King James version. " The state convention began its annual three-day meeting Monday amid fears it would-erupt into the fundamentalist-moderate infighting that has troubled Southern Baptists nationwide. More than 4,000delegates, 'called "messengers," were expected for the meeting of the 1.2million-member state convention, which is part of the 14.3million-member Southern Baptist Convention, the largest Protestant denomination in the country. For seven years, the denomination has been the target of an organized takeover attempt by conservatives who want to put its control "firmly. in the hands of fundamentalists with strong links to the new Christian Right," said Nancy Ammerman, a Southern Baptist and prof.essor of sociology of religion at Emory University in Atlanta. Mathews' expected running mates are the Rev. Ken Ridings of Asheville for first vice president and Sam Currin, U.S. attorney for the eastern district of North Carolina and an ally of Sen. Jesse HeIms, for second vice president. Running with Poe are the Rev. Leon Smith, pastor of Goldsboro's First Baptist Church, as first vice president and Beth Gilreath, a lay member of Charlotte's Providence Baptist Church, as second vice president.

Nothing is given so profusely as advice. - Francois, THE GASTONIA GAZE'ITE Duc De La Rochefoucauld Hometown Established 1880 Wednesday, Nov. 13, c B Gastonia minister says Baptists alie united By Tricia Robertson Gazette Staff Reporter The Rev. Ned Mathews says he doesn't see any split in the North Carolina Baptist State Convention, even though some members see the new president as a liberal. Mathews, pastor of Gastonia's Parkwood Baptist Church, lost the presidency of the convention to Charlotte lawyer Bill Poe Tuesday. The minister was nominated by conservatives who felt Poe was too liberal. Mathews, who received 1,530 votes to Poe's 1,878,disagrees. Poe replaces Norman Wiggins, president of Campbell University in Buies Creek. "It looks like they made a choice between two conservatives," Mathews said. "Mr. Poe won and I lost, and it's as simple as that." He noted that Poe was nominated by oneof the most conservative members of the convention. Poe, who was second vice president of the convention, also Mathews Poe bills himself as a conservative. But he was the favored candidate of moderates, and some observers have predicted a rift between fundamentalists and moderate-to-liberal Baptists. Fundamentalists believe the Bible is inerrant, while more moderate Baptists do not. Poe said he plans no radical changes and "trying to bring people together will be one of my No. priorities. " "If there are splits between conservatives and moderates, I'd like to get them together to hash them put," he said. Tuesday's session of the threeday convention attracted 3,763 delegates, or messengers. Besides the election of officers, those in attendance also participated in worship services and adopted resolutions opposing pornography and favoring separation of church and state. Although it was a meeting of a religious body, delegates were as concerned with parliamentary procedure as with the Bible. Some motions declared to be out of order had to be made and voted on twice. The messengers, who filled half of Ovens Auditorium, represented 1.2 million Southern Baptists in 3,466 North Carolina churches. The North Carolina Baptist group is affiliated with the 14.3 millionmember Southern Baptist Convention, the largest Protestant denomination in the United States. Among the nominees for the office of first vice president was Cline Borders, director of missions for the Kings Mountain Baptist Association. He came in third.

But that's what the people wanted him to preach on, Mathews said. The congregation was polled in May on what they wanted to hear from their preacher this summer. People wer asked to drop anonymously into the offering plate slips of paper with s ggested sermon topics. Some of Ute 15 topics submitted were familiar religious subjects like the second coming and eternal security. But given a chance to let their imaginations run free, people also asked about angels, working women, divorce, fasting and spiritual warfare. Mathews took them all on, extending his Asked For Sermon Series into the fall. "I enjoy the challenge of it," he said. "It is fun." The minister began preaching, one topic per Sunday, last month. On Sunday, he compared Bible teachings to the modern feminist movement, the fourth sermon in the series. "I don't know if I am bold, courageous or crazy," he said. The idea for taking sermon requests came from Mathews' wife. It is designed to stimulate interest during a season when church attendance drops because of summer travel. The minister said he wasn't surprised by the requests, even the unusual ones. "Most of the things are topics people are interested in," he said. "I think people are aware of what is going on. They read the papers and see things on TV. Their questions are pretty normal." He said he prepared for the sercraig Bell/The Gazette The Rev. For a pre-fourth sermon on America's future, he read colonial and Revolutionary War history. Mathews called the sermon outer space on June 26 one of the most difficult sermons he ever has delivered. The pastor quoted modern astronomers as much as from the Bible. 01). "There has been a mega cosmic shift in the thinking of astronomers in the last three to five years," Mathews said. "Since 1985 the evidences for a divinely caused and designed niverse have been accumulatdramatically. " A tape of the sermon has been one of the church's most requested reprints, Parkwood officials said.
