ALL THE PEOPLE OF THE LORD When Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp, away from the other prophets, Joshua, Moses beloved aide, urges Moses to stop them. Moses replies Would that all the people of the LORD were prophets! He proclaims that grace abounds for all and that the word of the Lord should be proclaimed by all the people. We see a similar situation in the Gospel of Mark. John tells Jesus that someone who does not follow him with them is driving out demons in Jesus name. Jesus replies Do not prevent him... For whoever is not against us is for us. In other words, Jesus is saying the same thing as Moses: Would that all the people prophesied in God s name! THE DEVASTATION OF SIN Jesus goes on to teach about sin and its consequences. Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were put around his neck and he were thrown into the sea. By little ones, Jesus means the humble followers as well as innocent children who love him. Certainly those who have abused children have not caused the children to sin, but have made them victims of the worst kind of abuse. These people are worthy of condemnation. Jesus next points out something so strong in its condemnation of sin that it alarms us when we hear it, knowing that we all are sinners. But Jesus often speaks in metaphors and parables, and it is not necessary to take his teaching about cutting off hands and feet and gouging out eyes literally. It can be taken to mean that if we are guilty of sin, we should make an immediate break from our sinfulness and return to God. Better to cut sin out of our life than to enter into eternal darkness. There is so much to learn from these readings that we have many things to ponder and to pray about. 2 VIGÉSIMO SEXTO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO 30 DE SEPTIEMBRE DE 2018 TODO EL PUEBLO DEL SEÑOR Cuando Eldad y Medad están profetizando en el campamento, lejos de los otros profetas, Josué, el amado ayudante de Moisés, le sugirió a Moisés que se los prohibiera. Moisés le respondió: Crees que voy a ponerme celoso? Ojalá que todo el pueblo de Dios fuera profeta. Él proclama que la gracia abunda para todos y que la palabra del Señor debe proclamarse para todo el pueblo. Vemos una situación parecida en el Evangelio de Marcos. Juan le dice a Jesús que algunos que no lo siguen están expulsando demonios en su nombre. Jesús les contesta: No se lo prohíban... Todo aquel que no está contra nosotros, está a nuestro favor. En otras palabras, Jesús está diciendo lo mismo que ya Moisés había dicho: Qué todo el pueblo profetizará en nombre del Señor! LA DEVASTACIÓN DEL PECADO Jesús continua enseñando acerca del pecado y sus consecuencias. Al que sea ocasión de pecado para esta gente sencilla que cree en mí, más le valdría que le pusieran al cuello una de esas enormes piedras de molino y lo arrojaran al mar. Por gente sencilla, Jesús quiere decir los seguidores humildes y también los niños inocentes que lo aman. Ciertamente aquellos que han abusado niños no han causado a los niños a pecar, sino que los han hecho victimas del peor tipo de abuso. Esas personas merecen ser condenadas. Luego, Jesús indica algo tan fuerte en su condenación del pecado que nos alarma cuando lo escuchamos, sabiendo que todos somos pecadores. Pero Jesús a menudo habla en metáforas y parábolas, y que no es necesario tomar su enseñanza de cortar la mano o el pie o sacar el ojo literalmente. Se puede entender que si somos culpables del pecado, debemos romper de inmediato nuestra pecaminosidad y regresar a Dios. Mejor romper con el pecado en esta vida que entrar a la oscuridad eterna. Hay tanto por aprender de estas lecturas que tenemos muchas cosas para reflexionar y orar. Aprovecha estas sabias enseñanzas para acercarte a Cristo y tratar a tus prójimos con amor y cuidado. For more information contact Rebecca Bernardino at DIVINE MERCY CONFERENCE The 13th Annual Divine Mercy Conference will be held on Saturday, October 6th at Divine Mercy Parish, 2231 Club Center Drive in Sacramento. The speakers include Father Ed Broom from Los Angeles and Kristine Franklin from Minnesota. Tickets are $20, if purchased in advance, or $25 purchased at the door. For tickets and information, please call MTMH BABY BOTTLE CAMPAIGN As you may know, the Mother Teresa Maternity Home serves women in crisis pregnancies by giving support, counseling, shelter, food, medical care attention, and love during this difficult, yet beautiful, time in these women s lives. All this while in a safe and drug free environment. Once the babies are born, the women who successfully complete the program are invited to stay for up to three months as the home helps them make the transition to motherhood. The home operates under a non-profit 501C-3 status and is fully funded by fundraisers and grants. During these dates in October, empty baby bottles will be distributed for families to fill with spare change, currency, or check donations made out to the home. The bottle distribution will be on Sunday, October 14th at all Masses and collected on Sunday, October 29th. Please be sure to watch for reminder announcements.
