Two Steps Forward... Why did Jesus walk on water to the disciples in the boat? Did he want to scare them? No, his first words to them were Do not be afraid. While they were being tossed by wind and waves, he showed them that he was not affected by the storm. If they had had faith, they might have realized that if Jesus was safe, they would be, too. We too must make that leap of faith, especially when we are afraid. Peter seemed to be willing to take the leap as he stepped into the water. But when his attention was distracted by the strong winds, he began to falter. This is where we can apply the story to ourselves. Our growth in faith is not a steady progression. For every two steps forward, we may take one step back. For example, we receive God s forgiveness in the sacrament of reconciliation and rejoice in God s loving mercy, but later we fall back into sin. We ask God s help in prayer and when our prayer is answered, our faith in God grows. Then we become ill or wreck the car, and think that God has abandoned us. But isn t that a natural reaction? It is natural to doubt God in times of trouble, but we are choosing to live in the supernatural when we become followers of Christ. Like Peter, we need to keep our attention on the Lord. As long as Peter looked to Jesus, he could walk on water. Only when he focused on the wind did he loose his nerve and begin to sink. In a similar way, we can lose our focus on the Lord. We see someone we love who is gravely sick. We make a serious mistake that gets us in trouble. We lose our job and have no leads to a new one. We are frightened by news of terrorist activity. These seem more real than faith in an invisible God. That is when we must remember that true faith allows us to believe when it doesn t seem to make sense. Faith tells us that though apparently invisible, God is more real than anything we can see. Remember Jesus on the cross saying, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Por cierto, ni judíos ni cristianos creen que el Todopoderoso hace este tipo de jugadas antojadizas con ellos, pero tiene algo de verdad la afirmación de que no acudimos a Dios pidiendo que nos salve sino cuando estamos en un apuro. Hoy el papel de Pedro, como aparece en todo el Nuevo Testamento, es ser un signo o representación de cada miembro de la Iglesia y de toda la Iglesia. Nuestra historia es el relato que se narra hoy sobre la fe de Pedro. Lo que puede aumentar nuestra fe es que aunque Cristo nos llama a encarar con valentía las tormentas de la vida, si las atravesamos con los ojos de la fe fijos en él, nada hemos de temer. Aunque demos un traspié o nos hundamos, basta gritar Señor, sálvame! para conocer la firmeza con la que Dios nos toma de la mano. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS I hope you all had a good week, as we get ready to begin a new week with the grace of God. I want to thank all the parishioners who attended the Knight s appreciation dinner on July 15 th. I am sure you will agree that you were treated to a wonderful dinner and an absolutely great comedic show. As we move forward with events, we thank you in advance for your continued support. I would like to extend my personal invitation to anyone who has not yet attended a Knights event to do so in the future. I am sure you'll have a great time! We do raise money for different causes, and it is also a great way to get to know our fellow parish members. If you are curious as to who we are, please approach any gentleman you see with a Knights badge and feel free to ask a question or two. They will be happy to answer any questions you have. We are only successful because of the volunteers who worked day after day collecting, sorting and placing items where they need to be. There were also the cashiers, Youth Group, and the men who helped (we always need you). I would also like to thank those who kept the ladies nourished by bringing in snacks and lunches. A lot of the success for this event is due to the donations and those who purchased items from the Rummage Sale. News from Faith Formation Announcing our new Coordinator of Faith Formation, Jeannine Delgado WELCOME! BIENVENIDA! Jeannine will be joining our parish team on Monday, August 14th. A graduate of UCSD, she has been volunteering with the Confirmation program for the last 2 years. Many of you may recognize her for her work with the students at the Youth Masses. She brings with her a wealth of knowledge and creativity as well as a desire to live her faith in this new position. Please welcome and support Jeannine s efforts with the families & youth of our parish. We are blessed to have her!
