Come. Stay awhile and eat this bread so you will never hunger. Come. Be strengthened in God to withstand the present night and the spiritual forces of evil. *Prayer of Invocation O God, we have no life apart from you. We do not come here to eat bread that fills us for a day. Rather we come to be nourished by you and that the love you have for us fills us for a lifetime. May this food strengthen our discipleship. Grant that it will renew in us our commitment to proclaiming the gospel of peace through our ministries of peace and justice in the name of Christ Jesus. Amen. Our Mission Statement Shiloh United Church of Christ is called to show Christ s love for all through witness, word, and worship. The principal hindrance to the advancement of the kingdom of God is greed It seems that when the back of greed is broken, the human spirit soars into regions of unselfishness. I believe that it is safe to say there can be no continuous renewal (of faith) without hilarious giving. And I fear no contradiction: wherever there is hilarious giving there will soon be renewal. *Opening Hymn O Mighty God, When I Survey in Wonder No. 35 *Call to Confession This is a time given by God to confess our sins against each other, all that God has created, and God. Let us take this time to account for the ways in which we have not lived what it means to be given abundant life in Jesus Christ. 2 *Prayer of Confession (all uniting) All Uniting: We profess that you are God, O Holy One. We have no other gods, and yet, we do not always serve you with sincerity and faithfulness. Our other gods are not the ones of our ancestors the ones beyond the River, or in Egypt, or of the Amorites. We struggle with other gods here and now who seek to fulfill us by consumerism and with selfimportance. We hear gods who instill in us such fear of our enemies that we seek power from weapons of destruction. Help us, O God, to find fulfillment in you. Forgive us that we are skeptical of love s transforming power. We repent of our sins and turn our hearts again to you. Amen. Silence *Kyrie (All Singing) No. 750 Christ have mercy upon us. And also with you. Let us pray. Gracious God, we pray for your holy universal Church; That we all may be one. Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; Fill it with all truth, in all truth with all peace. Where it is corrupt, purify it; where it is in error, direct it; where in anything it is amiss, reform it. Where it is right, strengthen it; where it is in want, provide for it; where it is divided, reunite it; for the sake of Jesus Christ thy Son our Savior. That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for the Penn Central Conference, the York Association for the mission of the Church, for pastors, lay ministers, and congregants; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight. 4

3 Let us pray for our own needs and those of others; especially we pray for the following persons in our community of faith....have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress. I ask your prayers for all who seek God or a deeper knowledge of the Eternal in our time. Pray that all may find and be found by God. Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we pray, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. Invitation to the Offering Have you ever asked, why the Doxology follows the offering? Doxology comes from the Greek doxologia, meaning words of glory. It follows an ascription of praise. Seen this way, this offering is an act of praise to God. So, it is through this offering that we honor God. Let us be generous in our praise to God. Offering our gifts before God (All persons are requested to sign the red friendship pads. Visitors are invited to include their address and phone number.) All church members and children are welcome who would like to help support singing/playing bells with our choirs for the church services. You do not need to know how to read music, just LOVE to sing!! We need YOU!! Come for good food and meet and greet your choirs. We invite all ages from 4yrs and up to join in our singing groups. A Sign-up sheet for the picnic is in the Gallery so we know how many people are planning to attend. 5 Prayers for the Week Morning: God of grace, clear our sleepy heads and fill our minds with expectation. Awake our slow bodies and energize our hearts with love in action. Ignite our spirits and set this day on fire with promise. Make the ordinary extraordinary. Engage us, show us your kingdom alive. Help us to see that every waking moment is full of promise because of you. Amen. Evening: O God, who is the life of we mortals, the light of the faithful, the strength of those who labor, and the repose of the dead; we thank you for the timely blessings of the day, and humbly beg for your merciful protection all this night. Bring us and our loved ones, we beseech you, in safety to the morning hours; through him who died for us and rose again, your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen. PRAYER SHAWLS NEEDED. The Sewing Circle keeps a supply of Prayer Shawls to give as needed, and we can use some help making them. If you would like to knit or crochet a Prayer Shawl for this ministry, please contact Karen Bupp at for a pattern. The SEWING CIRCLE will meet Thursday, September 13, at 9:30 a.m. THE STEWARDSHIP CHALLENGE runs until October 14. Our goal is to raise $5000 for a new boiler. Please put your contribution in your regular church envelope and mark the Other Line as Stewardship Challenge. Thanks for your support! GUEST PREACHER THIS MORNING Rev. Tom Kiepert I have been a member of the UCC church for about 35 years. The last 2 years I have been a Field Education Student at Faith UCC under the leadership of Pastor Ron Oelrich. I have been a student of the Pennsylvania Academy of Ministry for just about 5 years and will be attending my final classes the beginning of September. I am looking forward to obtaining my Pastor s license within the United Church of Christ. I have followed this direction while working full time in Retail Management at 50+ hours per week. I am anxious to have God lead me in my ministry and use me where he feels necessary. I have been married to my wife Brenda for 43 years and together we have raised 2 wonderful children. Our daughter Jennifer and her husband Michael Spangler have 2 children Mckenna 12 and Ethan 10 years of age. Our son Travis and his wife Laura have a 4 year old boy named Lincoln. We feel very blessed to have both our children and grandchildren within a 10 minute drive from our home in Jacobus. Rev. Tom Kiepert WEDNESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY - Please consider participating when Bible Study reconvenes at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 5, with the study of the 28 chapters of Matthew in room 202. All you need is your Bible and a desire to learn by participating in this study of the informative Gospel of Matthew. The Women s Guild will not meet in September but will meet August 27 in room 202. We will be studying Session 7 Priscilla: Living a Life of Blessed Ordinary. We will also have our planning meeting on this date for next years meetings. All women of the church are invited to attend at any time. SALLY JANE JOHNSON TO VISIT! Our Missionary from Costa Rica will be visiting from September 13 through October 25. Sally Jane hopes to attend as many of our church activities as possible during that time. She will also be available to spend some time with individual families.
