Summer is full of gi s from God. A couple years ago, we read a very good book exploring why having a day of rest, or Sabbath, each week is so wonderful and important. *Sabbath rest is a gi God has created for us; it s wrapped and ready to be given to us only, many of us choose not to accept this gi. Why is that? Why would we not want the freedom God offers through a weekly Sabbath rest? I think it is because we find it so hard to believe our lives will really be OK if we stop being produc ve one day a week. Maybe we grew up with Sabbath-keeping prac ces that drew us away from enjoying God and into joyless legalism, and we want to leave that behind. Whatever the reason, if you are not enjoying God s gi of day of Sabbath rest every week, this summer is a perfect me to start. Here are some thoughts to help you find freedom in a weekly day of Sabbath rest: Put away the to-do list. This is a day to be free from those things we are always feeling pressure to get done, like yard work, paying bills, and cleaning the house. Rules for the sake of rules are not helpful. A legalis c mindset can lead to a feeling of impending doom on the Sabbath: If I do this, lightning will strike me! On the contrary, Jesus Bill & Kristen J U L Y reminds us The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath (Mark 2:27 NLT). Make me on the Sabbath to do things that connect you with God, others, and yourself. Normally that involves worship with other Chris- ans. Even if your Sabbath has to be a different day of the week, you can spend some extra me with your Bible or in prayer. Be gentle with yourself if this is a new habit for you. You may find pu ng away the to-do list causes you anxiety or boredom. Don t feel bad; new habits always take a while to establish. There is a Jewish saying that goes, More than we keep the Sabbath, the Sabbath keeps us. I think that s true! Why not try and accept the gi of rest more fully this summer? Joy in the Journey, *Babb, Lynn. Sabbath Keeping: Finding Freedom in the Rhythms of Rest. Downer s Grove: InterVarsity, 2005.
2 P A G E 2 4 LEADERSHIP RUTS AND HOW TO GET OUT By Craig Ju la "Remember, ruts are worn over me not overnight." Craig Ju la Ruts on the road of our leadership lives are worn into place over me by driving in the comfortable grooves of complacency. What may have started out as a priority for each of us can erode into a road of indifference. If we aren t careful our ruts get deeper and turn into graves with the ends knocked out. I have listed a few poten al ruts that we can all get stuck in from me to me. Rut Number 1: The En tlement Rut This is a mindset rut that is akin to the Emperor s a tude toward his new clothes. We are no longer aware of what we are wearing and no one wants to tell us we re exposed. The rut of en tlement can permeate all areas of our leadership life. We can move out of this rut by being thankful, grateful for what we have and doing random acts of kindness for others. Rut Number 2: The Busyness Rut The me we used to spend on our physical, emo onal, mental and spiritual health is not what it used to be. We have to much to do and we can t, don t or won t get to the things that ma er most. We get so busy doing we forget being. We are indifferent about our soul care yet passionate about our endeavors. Get out of the busyness rut by taking me each day to pause, read a joke, laugh and enjoy life. Rut Number 3: The Educa on Rut We have been in our chosen profession long enough to be considered an authority or an expert. We have wri en ar cles, books or both. Complacency sets in and over me we find ourselves in an educa on rut. We must con nually feed our minds with new informa on and wisdom. It s what you learn a er you know it all that counts. Pick up a new book or magazine that has nothing to do with your profession and give it a read. Rut Number 4: The Accountability Rut Not having a peer or friend you can talk to somehow gets pushed down the to do list the longer we stay in leadership. More responsibility may come our way so we need to automate our lives. One of the first things to go is rela onal connec on. We no longer take the me to build healthy rela- onships that keep us from complacency. Move out of this rut by picking up the phone and calling a good friend. Take them to lunch or for a grande non-fat caramel macchiato. It s a great first step in reconnec ng accountability. Remember, ruts are worn over me not overnight. Doing the same thing, the same way expec ng the same results will deepen the groove. The deeper the rut, the harder it is to get out. What rut are you in right now? What have you done in the past to get out of a leadership rut? Craig s Blog reprinted with permission from Empoweredliving. whowillyouempower.com P U L S E B E A T J U L Y
