Please sign the Friendship Register at the end of your pew so that we have a record of your visit. And please come and worship with us again. Please also introduce yourself to Pastor Maglietto. He would love to meet you and to serve you in whatever way he can. OUR FACILITIES Our restrooms are located to the right as you leave the sanctuary in the Mother s Room and downstairs next to the exit. The members of St. John s believe that families should be encouraged to worship together. (Church, like much of life, needs to be taught to young children.) If your young one needs some time out, we have an audio-equipped Mother s Room just outside the sanctuary to your right. If you need anything during the service, please feel free to ask an usher. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY America's moral decay is perhaps not so surprising in a world dominated by sin. We are tempted to become discouraged and to seek solutions in mere human beings. Yet the one true God is still the Lord of all. His Word still works on sin-hardened hearts. His church will endure. We have his promise! PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP Lord, keep this nation under your care. Bless the leaders of our land that we may be a people at peace among ourselves and a blessing to other nations of the earth. Help us elect trustworthy leaders, contribute to wise decisions for the general welfare, and serve you faithfully in our generation to the honor of your holy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. 1

C: It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. M: Yet, we have not always lived in the freedom that Christ gives us. We have too often remained slaves to sin. Let us confess our sins to the Lord. 7 NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. 9 SERMON 1 Peter 2:13-17 Good Christians are Good Citizens 13 Submit yourselves for the Lord s sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, 14 or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. 15 For it is God s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men. 16 Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God. 17 Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king. 10 PRAYER OF THE CHURCH M: Almighty God, we acknowledge with thanks that all we have and enjoy is a gift from your gracious hand. We come before you today in heartfelt appreciation for our nation and its people. C: We thank you for enabling us to worship you in freedom and to serve you without fear. M: You have enriched us with the bounties of farm and factory, the beauty of forest and mountain, and the marvels of medicine and science. C: For all these blessings, we praise and glorify you. M: Look with favor upon our nation, and preserve our cherished liberties. Enable our leaders to govern with wisdom, honesty, courage, and justice. Protect those who serve in the armed forces and those who maintain peace and safety in our communities. C: Give us willingness to obey our nation s laws and to work for the common good. M: Keep our financial institutions secure and our economy strong. Bless our fields that they may produce abundant harvests. Guard us from calamities of nature and accident, and spare our land from the ravages of disease and epidemic. C: Teach us not to worry but to cast all our cares on you. 11 Our Congregation practices the biblical practice of Close Communion. The Bible teaches that communing together signifies a oneness in faith, life, and worship. Reception of the Lord s Supper by Christians not fully united with us would imply a oneness that does not exist. Therefore, we kindly ask that if you are not a member of St. John s or a sister WELS or ELS congregation, that you do not commune with us today. 19 ANNOUNCEMENTS Divine Call: On June 25, 2017, the voters of our congregation who were in attendance, called Pastor Todd Engel to serve as our Associate Pastor. Pastor Engel currently serves at St. John Lutheran Church in Red Wing, MN. Please keep Pastor Engel, his wife Michelle, and his children (Samuel, Katie and Joseph) in your prayers as he deliberates where he can best serve in God s kingdom at this time.
