Reilly Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 20, 2017 The foreigners who join themselves to the Lord, ministering to him, loving the name of the Lord and becoming his servants, all who keep the Sabbath free from profanation and hold to my covenant, them I will bring to my holy mountain and make joyful in my house of prayer for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples. In this age of xenophobia, anti -Semitism and racial tensions in the world in which we live, Isaiah summons us to think, ask for forgiveness and discover the Christ in the vulnerable, the hurting, the poor. Pope Francis calls us to discover the Christ and also reflect the love and compassion of the Lord for others. The words of scripture and the teaching of the Holy Father, are directed to every catholic, every catholic community of faith. The rich history of Catholicism in the United States reflects growth through the gifts brought by every immigrant group. The gospel of Jesus Christ accompanied those who migrated, bringing rich traditions, deep faith and a desire to build the kingdom of God. All couples contemplating marriage are asked to give the priests one year prior notice in order that all the requirements for marriage can be satisfied. CARE OF THE SICK AND HOMEBOUND: We will gladly bring Holy Communion to anyone who is ill or otherwise unable to get to Mass. Please call the rectory to make arrangements. The priests and deacon make regular visits to the local hospitals. Please call the rectory if any loved one is hospitalized. RITE OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: At such times of deep pain and loss, we seek to offer our bereaved families comfort and hope as they commend their loved ones to God. THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED MOTHER We continue our on-line retreats with our parish stained glass windows with a reflection on the Assumption of the Blessed Mother, the Feast Day of which is August 15th. THANK YOU The Knights of Columbus #3231 thank all St. Denis parishioners and visitors who contributed to their annual Handicapped Citizens Drive during the weekend of July 29th & 30th. The amount collected at all weekend Masses at St. Denis amounted to $2, This was added to $1,384.91collected at St. Mark s Parish and $4, collected at local stores to total $8, Thank you for being so generous to a worthy cause. A major portion will be distributed to the Holy Innocents Society of St. Mark s Parish. The remainder will be divided between the Friends of Special Children and the ARC of Monmouth County. All money is distributed to the handicapped. For the Love of God Praise & Sing Come, Praise our Lord with Contemporary Christian Music. 30 minutes of prerecorded music with lyric sheets provided. Every First Friday at 7:00 pm For info call Allison Penkethman I thank all involved in our second annual Recovery Awareness Weekend. As you may have seen, our approach to recovery is broadening to a recovery of whole health of the person. A new initiative that you will be reading about in upcoming bulletins is the Daniel Plan which involves a healthy approach to eating as a person of faith. Whatever the addiction, we are loved by God and St. Denis Parish is here to offer prayerful support and information for help in recovery. Please call Eileen Ziesmer in the office for any information you may have missed if you were unable to be there last weekend. I ask that you join me in praying for all our collegebound students. May God bless them with a great semester. I also ask you to join me in praying for all the seminarians from our diocese, including Kevin Ludwig, from our parish. May God bless Kevin and all the seminarians, and may many more men respond to a life of service in the Church as priests and deacons. I asked Kevin to share his recent retreat experience with us, and so I invite you to read his View from the Pew in this bulletin. View from the Pew - Retreat Back to God No matter where each one of us is on our spiritual journey, it is helpful to reflect on the past, enjoy the present, and have hope for the future. The seminarians of our own Trenton Diocese, myself included, went on a retreat the other week. We retreated from the everyday busy work, school, internet, cell phones, TV, family joys and arguments, and all the other worldly distractions that occupy our time. We took a time out for one week to recall that God and our relationship with Jesus is the source and reason for our lives, and our number one priority. At the Loyola Center in Morristown, NJ, we got to meet the new seminarians, prayed together, shared meals, and played music together. It was fun and peaceful! Not only seminarians, but all of us could use a retreat back to God. It doesn t happen unless we take the time to do it though. Treat yourself by Retreating yourself! Our retreat speaker, Fr. Pablo Gadenz, who is from our diocese and teaches at the Immaculate Conception Seminary in South Orange, spoke of two things that especially caught my attention: Prayer and the Cross. We were reminded that prayer (communication) is our relationship with our Lord. Here s a comparison. How does a married couple do if they are not communicating? Right. Next is the Cross. Jesus had a large wooden one, but each one of us has different small crosses and at times large ones. Ideally we could embrace our crosses as Jesus did. Short of that, we surely must accept our crosses. In the words of Thomas A. Kempis, in the Cross is salvation, life, protection from enemies, infusion of heavenly sweetness, strength of mind, joy of spirit, highest virtue, and perfect holiness. There is no salvation of soul nor hope of everlasting life but in the Cross! If you share in His suffering, you shall share in His glory. If you die with Him, you shall also live with Him. Take up your cross, therefore, and follow Jesus, and you shall enter eternal life. (Imitation of Christ) It has been good to be here with you all at St. Denis this summer. As I begin the new academic year at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, I will be praying for you all. Please continue to pray for and encourage current and future seminarians of the Diocese of Trenton. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Ocean County is a non-profit that works with the most vulnerable members of our community, abused and neglected children who reside in foster care. VINCENT DEPAUL The Gospel today announces that the kingdom and salvation are for all people. It is our persistent calling out to Jesus and our faith that count, for Jesus always responds. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul responds with love with Jesus for your neighbors who have nothing. It has been over 800 years that women have had a public role in the Church. Just like the Canaanite woman of great faith, the Lord has blessed the St. Denis Conference of SVDP with women volunteers of great faith. Thank you Jesus for blessing us with these wonderful women. In our day, Divine Providence has called these women to take up the crucial work of caring for the poor. God has called upon them to dispense many alms and be like mothers to the poor children. By the grace of God, these good women have responded to these needs with great warmth and steadiness Our next scheduled general meeting will be Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at 7:00 pm in Msgr.
