1 HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time June 17, 2018 Therefore, we aspire to please him, whether we are at home or away. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive recompense, according to what he did in the body, whether good or evil. In recent years we have heard calls for transparency and accountability. Whether in politics, the corporate world or the church, demands are being made on the activities of others. Judgments follow. The television is filled with many court room cases being exposed and decisions made guilty, non guilty, fines and recompense. That is entertainment. St. Paul reminds us that we all will experience the same accountability for reward or punishment. Sometimes we try to avoid finding ourselves as the subject of such scrutiny, yet it is only as a result of our goodness, our prayer life, our service to others, that the reward will come. For many, it is quite convenient to pass over the idea of judgment. Maybe we should spend a moment to judge ourselves, ask forgiveness and reap the reward. All couples contemplating marriage are asked to give the priests one year prior notice in order that all the requirements for marriage can be satisfied. CARE OF THE SICK AND HOMEBOUND: We will gladly bring Holy Communion to anyone who is ill or otherwise unable to get to Mass. Please call the rectory to make arrangements. The priests and deacon make regular visits to the local hospitals. Please call the rectory if any loved one is hospitalized. RITE OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: At such times of deep pain and loss, we seek to offer our bereaved families comfort and hope as they commend their loved ones to God. Last summer was our first-ever super-successful combined Scripture Study with people from Holy Trinity, St. Mark, and St. Denis. Each week we had about 30 people gather at a different church with a different presenter reflecting on the same Readings we would all be using at our upcoming weekend worship services. VINCENT DE PAUL Patience Have you noticed, as in today s Gospel, how often Jesus used the image of the growth of small seeds in His parables? These stories of growth underline for us the point that we should not always look for immediate results from our efforts and that the harvests do not ripen quickly. In this age of instant results, it is difficult for us to be patient with the slow growth resulting from our work with the poor and needy. We often do not quickly see the positive outcomes that we hope forand in some cases we don t see them at all. But Jesus urges patience. Sometimes we must live with the realization that it is one person who sows and another who reaps; and we need to be content to be the person who sows and let God provide the harvest in His own good time. If you are interested in helping sow small seeds with the St. Vincent de Paul Society, our meetings are held on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at 7:00 pm in Msgr. As we celebrate our fathers, we pray that God blesses them in their journey of faith. With this in mind, I want to describe many of the different ways in which the men of our parish can get together for fellowship and development in our Catholic Faith. It is important to take the time to be personally engaged and encouraged in discipleship by taking action in one s church. Knights of Columbus: As a Catholic man, you want to stand up for your values and support what s right. As a member of the Knights of Columbus, you receive the tools you need to stay informed, take action, and support efforts on important issues. Join more than 1.9 million Knights to defend your values. Visit and talk to a Knight at our parish to learn more and be part of this terrific organization that does so much. I m a Knight, you can always talk to me! Catholic Men s Breakfast Meeting: A fellowship of Catholic men sharing the joy of Christian values. This group of local Catholic men meets the first Wednesday of each month at Kelly s Tavern, Highway 35 in Neptune City. There is always an inspirational speaker on tap (pun intended). The meeting begins promptly at 7:30 a.m. with a breakfast of fresh bagels and spreads, hot coffee and tea, orange juice, and bananas and ends at 8:30 a.m. For more information contact: John M. Get together with others to work for the good of the parish on any number of projects, announced from time to time. Get on the contact list and then see if you can help with the individual projects you re invited to. Meet new people from the parish. That Man is You is a group we encourage men to join over at St. Mark s Parish. Although they have entered their summer hiatus, they will start up again in the fall. They meet early Saturday morning (6:00-7:30am) in order to give the men a chance for time for themselves before the day starts. There is a topic with discussion time and breakfast. There will be two new groups starting in the fall here at St. Denis. One group is already occurring at Epiphany parish and will be introduced here. In September, St. Denis men are invited to Epiphany for Mass, followed by a meeting. Then, Saturday, October 13 th we will be hosting a meeting here. There will be a discussion topic and time to talk with others in small groups. Another men s group will also begin with a similar format and meet during the week, so to offer more opportunities for men of faith to get together and benefit from the experience. Stay tuned for more details this August and let s pray for God s blessings on all that is being undertaken to help foster the faith life of the men of our parish/area and promote Catholic fellowship.
