1 HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 7, 2018 It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a suitable partner for him.... That is why a man leaves father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one flesh whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it. Then he embraced them and blessed them placing his hands on them. The Genesis creation story is the first sign of God s loving concern for His creation. The history of human kind repeats the account as efforts are made for suitable partners. Jesus care was of such great importance that He made Holy Matrimony one of the grace giving Sacraments of the church. Pope Francis in his wonderful exhortation The Joy of Love, describes marriage as a lifelong project to be undertaken, a work in progress on a daily basis. Encouraging couples to overlook the deficiencies which are part of everyday life, he asks us to build our relationship on four pillars patience, understanding, tolerance and generosity. All couples contemplating marriage are asked to give the priests one year prior notice in order that all the requirements for marriage can be satisfied. CARE OF THE SICK AND HOMEBOUND: We will gladly bring Holy Communion to anyone who is ill or otherwise unable to get to Mass. Please call the rectory to make arrangements. The priests and deacon make regular visits to the local hospitals. Please call the rectory if any loved one is hospitalized. RITE OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: At such times of deep pain and loss, we seek to offer our bereaved families comfort and hope as they commend their loved ones to God. Please note that, in accordance with Church regulations, eulogies are not permitted during Funeral Masses. RECTORY OFFICE HOURS: Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM. A NIGHT OF PRAYER-There will be a night of Taize Prayer in reparation for the healing of all victims of abuse and the sanctification and renewal of bishops and priests sponsored by the Trenton Chapter of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians. This prayer will happen simultaneously in each of the four counties of our diocese on Monday, October 15th at 7:30 pm. Our parish musicians and choir are participating in our Cohort 20 hosted event for Ocean County at St. Martha s Church, 3800 Herbertsville Rd, Pt. Pleasant. SENIOR CITIZENS (55 & OLDER)- The Manasquan Senior Citizens thank all who attended our September meeting and a special thanks to all who joined our organization. We had a great time. Our meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month in the cafeteria of the St. Denis School building at 12:00 noon, so our October meeting is coming up on the 9th of this month. PRAYING WITH THE PSALMS- The Christian Communities of Holy Trinity Lutheran, St. Mark and St. Denis Catholic parishes will gather for three meetings centering on unique psalm types. Each gathering will include chances to pray and reflect together (bring your own Bible!) and share the important ways in which the psalms can deepen our relationship with God. Meetings will take place from 11 am-12 noon and again from 7-8 pm as follows: October 16: St. Denis Church School Cafeteria (Fr. Bill Lago gives overview and introduces psalms of wisdom and praise.) Interested in learning more? Please visit BLAZE is the Walking With Purpose ministry developed for middle school aged girls. Our mission with Blaze is to use scripture to speak truth into the hearts of young girls who are bombarded by lies about their true worth and beauty. Our Blaze ministry offers resources to help you reach the hearts of middle school girls with the love of Christ and the truths of our Catholic faith. Two years of curriculum, a kit full of take home gifts and ice breakers, a mother/daughter devotional, retreat guides, Bible studies, and prayer journals give you all you need to communicate with middle school girls as they navigate truth and lies in their everyday life. Meetings take place on Tuesday, 6:30-7:30 pm and will continue 2-3 times per month until May. Registration forms can be found on the information table in the gathering space of the church. OUR LADY OF FATIMA ROSARY RALLY Our country needs our prayers. On the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima, October 13th, join us in front of the rectory at 12:00 noon as we respond to our Lady s call to pray the rosary for the defeat of evil and the promotion of the truths of our faith. Chairs will be provided if needed. We will pray for the respect of human life and for the end of abortion and assisted suicide. We will pray for the protection of the definition of marriage as between a man and a woman, and we will pray for the strength for our Catholic families in spite of anti-catholic sentiment and misunderstanding the truths of the faith. As we recall Our Lady s words on July 13, 1917 Finally my Immaculate Heart will triumph. THE SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL Last week s Gospel recounted how John said to Jesus, Teacher, we saw a man using your name to expel demons and we tried to stop him because he is not of our company. Jesus said in reply, Do not try to stop him. No man who performs a miracle using my name can (at the same time) speak ill of me. Anyone who is not against us is with us. Anyone who gives you a drink of water because you belong to Christ will not go without his reward. In this Gospel, the apostle John is bringing it to Jesus attention that someone who doesn't belong was doing what Jesus did. Jesus lays down a simple, clear rule: anyone who is doing good in His name cannot also speak ill of Jesus. And so, we may not exactly perform miracles but we can do good works in His name. This is especially true when we see Christ in the poor whom we serve - whether we serve them as volunteers of SVdP or in some other way. If you would like to help the poor in His name as part of SVdP or in some other way, please come to one of our general meetings, which are held the first and third Tuesdays of the month at 7:00 pm in Msgr. 5 Novena in Honor of St. Denis October 1-9 PREPARATORY PRAYER Almighty and eternal God! With trust, I beseech You to graciously grant me, through the merits and intercession of St. Denis, our Patron Saint, the petition which through him I humbly place before You, devoutly saying, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Vouchsafe graciously to hear it, if it is to Your greater glory and the salvation of my soul. Amen PRAYER IN HONOR OF ST. DENIS O God, Who conferred Your saving faith on the people of France through Your holy bishop and martyr Denis, and did glorify him before and after his martyrdom by many miracles. Grant us, through his intercession, that the faith practiced and preached by him may be our light on the way of life, so that we may be preserved from all anxieties of conscience, and if by human frailty we have sinned, we may return to You speedily by true penance. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. INVOCATION OF ST. DENIS Glorious servant of God, St. Denis, with intense love did you devote yourself to Christ after learning to know Him through the apostle St. Paul. Preaching His saving name to the nations, and bringing the knowledge and love of God, for Who s sake you did not shrink from martyrdom. Implore for me a continual growth in the knowledge and love of Jesus, so that my restless heart may experience that peace which He alone can give. Help me by thy powerful intercession with God to serve Him with a willing heart, to devote myself with steadfast love to His service, and thereby to attain the eternal bliss of heaven. Amen. PRAYER My Lord and my God! I offer up to You my petition in union with the bitter passion and death of Jesus Christ, Your Son, together with the merits of His Immaculate and Blessed Mother, Mary Ever Virgin, and of all the Saints, particularly with those of the Holy Helper, St. Denis, in whose honor I make this novena. Look down upon me, merciful Lord! Grant me Your Grace and Your Love, and graciously hear my prayer. Amen. Bill Happy Feast of St. Denis, as we celebrate our patron saint this weekend and next. Although his Feast Day is October 9th, we are able to celebrate our patron saint on a Sunday close to the Feast, and I chose this weekend, during our parish novena, which leads up to his feast day. It is important for us to reflect on his life and this year, we offer a reflection on the stained glass window depicting St. Denis, on our parish website, to help in that endeavor. We will also use the Feast of St. Denis as a time to pray in thanksgiving for all the volunteers of our parish and ask God s blessings on all the ministries that we have here in addition to our prayers for God s blessings upon our parish and all parishioners. With all that is happening at the parish, there is something for everyone to be involved in and I hope that you take part in some aspect of our parish life so that we can all exercise our gifts for the good of the parish and building up the Kingdom here in our area. And our parish continues to build the Kingdom working alongside other parishes in our area, particularly in our southern Monmouth coastal parishes (the deanery we belong to) and the parishes of our cohort. On the Feast of St. Denis, we begin another phase of our cohort collaboration as the priests of St. Denis, St. Martha, St. Peter, and Epiphany parishes meet with our new coordinator and continue our plans to work together. We pray for God s blessings, for unless the Lord build the house, they labor in vain who build. GRANDPARENT GUILD-This Tuesday at 6:30pm in the rectory, we will have our first interest meeting for our newly forming Grandparent Guild. Take a survey from the back of the church/chapel and bring it to the meeting, during which we will introduce ourselves and the materials we have at hand for helping us in the vocation of grandparenting. Help to shape the guild by your thoughts and input. May Sts. Joachim and Anne pray for all grandparents. BUS TRIP TO MOUNT ST. MARY SEMINARY Father Dan Swift, Assistant Director of Vocations and Pastor of St. Mary of the Lakes Church in Medford, is sponsoring a bus trip to Emmitsburg, MD on Thursday, October 18th. The bus will leave St. Mary of the Lakes at 7:30 am and will arrive in Emmitsburg approximately at 11:00 am. We will enjoy a buffet lunch at The Mountain Gate Restaurant, and have time to visit the Basilica of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, the motherhouse of the Daughters of Charity, and Mt. St. Mary's Seminary where Mass will be offered, and the Grotto of Lourdes. Autumn is a beautiful time of year at the seminary, as it resides at the foot of St. Mary s Mountain. The bus will return to Medford by approximately 9:00 pm. Any young man who is interested is asked to Father Dan at father_dan@smlparish.org.
