1 Wayside Presbyterian Church Newsletter OCTOBER 2018 Wayside puts on a great fall event for the community every year, and many hands make light work. Our Grace Notes worship band will be providing seasonal live music while guests move from trunk to trunk, and from fun 'n games to food and face painting. Our pavilion and outdoor spaces will be full of families with young children, and our own youth and adults will be receiving them with or without costumes. Trunk 'n Treaters will receive wrapped candies and small prizes throughout the 1 1/2 hour event, which begins for the community at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, October 24. Decorated vehicle trunks, support volunteers, and clean up help are needed. Please sign up on the bulletin board in the Administrative hallway to lend a hand to this important outreach effort. Thank you! Call of Congregational Meeting The Ruling Elders of Session have called a Special Meeting of the Congregation for October 14, 2018 immediately following the single combined 10:00 a.m. worship service. The purpose of the meeting is to receive and act on the report of the Nominating Committee for election of officers, review the adequacy of the Pastor's Compensation, and conduct any other business of the corporation that should come before the congregation (none expected). CELEBRATION SUNDAY / CHILI COOK-OFF - OCT 14 Wayside members and friends will be dedicating our 2019 pledge cards during a single combined service at 10:00 a.m. After the service we will hold our annual Chili Cook-Off in the atrium over lunch, in conjunction with the Special Meeting of the Congregation. Thanks in advance to the Membership Committee for hosting the taste challenge! 2 A handyman in a small church was asked by the pastor to make a Christmas announcement for the front lawn of the church. "How big, and what do you want on the sign?" he asked. The pastor quoted Isaiah 9:6, and said it should be the size of a sheet of plywood. The congregation was shocked when they arrived for Christmas Eve services to the following message: "For unto us a Child is born, a big one, 4 by 8 feet!" Wayside's new digital sign is up and running! It has many more capabilities than you can see right now, but we are limited by current township rules as to animations and changes that might distract the drivers and passengers we are trying to reach (think commuters and school buses). So, we are starting out with just three messages that remain static for one or more days a week, rotating them in and out to promote Sunday service times and midweek youth programming, and to leverage our contemporary service in particular in our congregation's mission "to know Christ and make Christ known." While messaging will arise through the Pastor and church office, our Technology Chair, Andrew Fritz is responsible for final sign displays. There's a science to it actually -- the colors and numbers of characters manageable by the human eye while doing the speed limit (35 mph) on Stony Battery Road. We expect the new sign will make a major contribution to our community presence and ministry advertising, and we hope never to make the kind of sign "bloopers" that end up being passed around the internet! Watch for messages to highlight this month's Trunk 'n Treat community event, November's Grace Notes "God and Country" concert, and December's Celtic Christmas after-dinner music. And remember, the sign may attract interest to neighbors and passers-by, but our program excellence and hospitality will determine whether people stay and grow with us. Always speak to guests and invite them to connect! New Sermon Series for October Pastor Steve will be highlighting Wayside's Four Ws (Welcome, Worship, Wisdom & Witness) in a new series of messages during services in October (in that order). These four Ws represent both a well rounded Christian response to the Gospel and ways people can connect with Wayside's ministry. Sometimes it is a desire to see if God will "show up" in worship that draws a first time guest; sometimes it is a simple invitation by you or me. Each is a portal into the community of faith, and each serves to develop and more holistic faith experience. Pastor Steve and the Membership Committee are offering our next Seekers Class on Sunday October 21 following the second service (12:15 pm). A light lunch will be provided for this one installment overview of the beliefs and practices of Wayside Church. Whether a beginner in the Christian faith, a transfer from another church, or a spiritual seeker considering making a commitment to Christ and His Church "by the Wayside," this 1 1/2 hour class will satisfy expectations for membership if participants choose to officially unite with this congregation. Please inform Pastor Steve or the church office of your intention to attend so enough materials can be prepared. Gab & Grub Meet us at Lombardo s! 3 Wayside s Fall Work Day Saturday, October 13 9am - Noon Come out & lend a hand! Thank you, Jane Kintzi, for creating our newest addition to Wayside's banner collection, "Peace." With open hands lifted high cradling the word "Peace" and lots of "life" springing forth, the banner is more suggestive of springtime than harvest. When asked to summarize the message of the colorful banner, which we dedicated on September 9 during the 9:30 service, Jane answered, "Peace is complicated." The Banner has a number of symbols painted into the design, and the congregation is encouraged to search for them and meditate on them during worship services. Perhaps you'll see a symbol that captures our October sermon theme! Thank you, Roger Cook, for giving us 3 new beautiful plaques! Look for Wayside s 4 W s in the narthex area beside the kitchen window, reminding all who stop for refreshments or pass by in the hallway of the ways our congregation reaches out to members and friends as the Wayside Family. The Ten Commandments hold a place of honor in the conference room, reminding us of God s laws of love for our vertical and horizontal relationships. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God s grace in its various forms. (1 Peter 4:10) 2019 Annual Stewardship Campaign Wayside Church was called into ministry in 1985, and 33 years later we serve a membership of about 180, with another 125+ individuals affiliated via programs and pastoral care. For a medium-sized church we have a lot going on for children, youth and adults. Our message of love and care in Jesus' name extends from birth to death, with outreach and inreach completely funded by the regular and special giving of our ministry partners. Now is the time to look back on how faithful we have been in our financial support to date, and to prayerfully consider our expected level of investment for We understanding personal situations can change over the course of a year, but some indication of our financial intentions is needed to anticipate resources for the year ahead. Pledge cards have been mailed out and are also available on the Information Table in the Administrative hallway. On Sunday October 14 these pledge cards will be received and dedicated during the single combined worship service, and then utilized by the Finance Committee to present a proposed budget to Session for next year. The biblical challenge is giving at least at the 10% level of household income. Some of us can give more, some are struggling to give what we can. For all of us, giving to the church should be a sacrifice of love, and done with a cheerful heart.

4 Join us!! New, beginning October 3! IGNITE Wednesdays 5:00-7:15pm Bible based activities & dinner for elementary, middle, & high school youth. Rotational programming for younger children with various leaders, combined middle/high school youth meeting with George Armold in the Youth Room. Meeting Wednesdays, October 3, 10, & 17 (off for Trunk n Treat 10/24) Sunday mornings CF Opportunities for young children (Higher Ground) led by Sonja Eckert, and middle/high school youth (The Deep) led by Tad Hershey. Younger children will recall themes from IGNITE Wednesdays, while older youth will engage in Bible discussions about everyday questions, challenges, & triumphs. Confirmation classes will be offered during the Winter Break and led by Rev. Larry Moir. Youth (8 th grade through high school) are encouraged to consider stepping up in their commitment to Christ and his church. Blanket & Sheet Sunday Dedication - October 28 Bring your blanket & sheet donations (twin - flat or fitted) to church on October 21st & 28th to be given to Columbia Presbyterian Church s Hands Across the Street program. Blankets & sheets can be packaged or tied up and placed in the basket in front of the Mission Committee bulletin board. Wayside at Hempfield Area Food Pantry On September 24 Pastor Steve presented a $2,000 check from the proceeds of our June 9th Waystock Community Music & Fun Fest to the Hempfield Area Food Pantry. Wayside is one of 18 churches that supplies food & volunteers to serve about 145 families/month through the Food Pantry located at Zion Lutheran Church on Brandt Avenue in Landisville. Wednesday, October 10; 12:00 pm Field Trip to The Burning Bridge Diorama & Historical Museum in Wrightsville Our Program Team has organized a field trip on Wednesday October 10. We will travel to Wrightsville to visit two sites: The Burning Bridge Diorama and the Historical Museum. Both of these provide details of Civil War events in and around Wrightsville at the time Confederate armies were advancing north. Our plan is to gather at Wayside at noon, eat our bag lunches and then car-pool to the venues in Wrightsville. Travel directions will be provided. A sign-up sheet is posted for you to register your interest in joining this trip. There is an entry-fee cost for the diorama and we need a head count to make the arrangements. Please register by no later than September 30. We will meet at 12 noon in the Atrium to enjoy lunch before leaving for Wrightsville. Bring your bag lunches [we provide the beverages] and join us! We invite others in the greater Wayside community, even if you are not senior, to attend this presentation.
