2 Whole School News Celebrating Our Heritage It has been great over this term to re-tell (and remember) part of Chairo s story our heritage. We started by saying how important it is to remember to not forget our past, our story, our beginnings. These roots are an important way in which we can ensure that we stay the course and continue to be the community that we have desired to be from the beginning. In the previous newsletter, we reflected on forty years of Christian education in South Gippsland through Leongatha Christian School, South Coast Christian College and now Chairo Leongatha. This year also marks twenty years since our wonderful Pakenham Campus (originally known as the Cardinia Campus) commenced. It was wonderful to hear more about this part of the Chairo community when Steve McAllister spoke at last month s AGM about the founding and growing of this campus. Our founding families had established the school at the Drouin East site on Lardners Track in 1983, and Chairo had then expanded to the Balfour Road site a bit closer to Drouin in A good number of families were travelling to Chairo from west of the school including from Pakenham and some were expressing a desire to see a campus of Chairo established closer to where they lived. In October 1996, a small group of parents gathered at the home of Tony and Lisa Finlay to discuss the possibility of starting a new campus. A public meeting was held in Pakenham in December and, after much searching, forty acres of land was purchased on Bald Hill Road between Pakenham and Nar Nar Goon in May Much preparation work was done, including by families whose children were attending Chairo Drouin, to establish a campus in the middle of paddocks, with no real services or amenities at their disposal. It literally was a greenfield site, with a driveway and two small buildings being established. Slabs for the first stage of building were poured in early October of 1997 and to cut a long story short the campus opened with two teachers and twenty students on 2 February Again, families were seeing the fulfilment of a wonderful and over-reaching dream the establishment of a Christian school in an area where there had not previously been ready access to Christian education. The campus grew rapidly and is now the largest Chairo campus, with close to 800 students from Kindergarten to Year 12. It really is a living example of how God s goodness realised through uncompromising vision, sacrifice and hard work can be seen in such a tangible manner. The campus is also a wonderful testimony to the generosity of the Chairo community. By God s goodness, and with recognition to the spirit with which our founders established the school, there is a generosity within our community that is quick to look outward for the good of others. The establishment of a campus near Pakenham is a wonderful example of this, as is the willingness to embrace our campuses at Leongatha and Traralgon at particular times when this support was so needed. I trust that you, as a valued member of our school community, have also experienced this generosity in some way. I hope this is the case, not because it glorifies Chairo, but because it points to someone far bigger than Chairo to our loving and generous Father in heaven, who, because of His initial generosity to us in Jesus, enables us to show and share that generosity with others. Simon Matthews, Executive Principal From the Finance Office Tax Deductible Building Fund As the end of the financial year fast approaches, we wish to remind all Chairo parents and supporters that we have a tax deductible building fund. Building development plans around Chairo remain very high, as we continue to develop the Pakenham Campus and construct the Chairo Cultural Centre at Drouin in particular. Funds can also be directed to capital projects at the Drouin East and Leongatha campuses. Your donation would be a great assistance and encouragement to the school community. For more information, or to make a donation, please contact Tammy Williamson in the finance office ( or twilliamson@chairo.vic.edu.au). Performing Arts Support In addition to seeking donations for the building fund, sponsorship and donations are also encouraged for the purpose of assisting with the fit out of the Chairo Cultural Centre (musical instruments, lighting and stage effects, etc.) at the Drouin Campus. For more information, or to make a donation of any size, please contact Tammy Williamson in the finance office ( or twilliamson@chairo.vic.edu.au).

3 Have You Considered Joining the Board? Even though Chairo is a large, multi-campus school with assets of $65 million, we are nevertheless a not-forprofit incorporated association just like so many sporting clubs and other organisations that are governed by a committee of volunteers. As vitally important as our Executive Principal, Business Manager and more than 250 other staff members are to the ongoing success of Chairo, nothing would be possible without our dedicated, hardworking Board members. Jeff Calway (Board Chairman) explained: God has certainly blessed us over the past 35 years or more with wonderful, godly men and women who have been passionate about Christian education and prepared to serve for a season as Board members. Many of those currently serving on the Board have been doing so for a good number of years and/or their children are nearing the end of their school years. As always, we are trusting that God will raise up Christian men and women who will progressively replace those who conclude their time on the Board. Have you considered joining the Board? Can you think of other Chairo parents who might be suitable? Are you able to bring this need before the Lord in prayer? Would you like more information about Board responsibilities and time commitment? A good place to start is by reading the Governance at Chairo booklet (available at chairo.vic.edu.au/pdf/ Enrolment/Governance at Chairo Booklet.pdf) and/or talking to a current Board member. There is no doubt that serving on the Chairo Board requires a significant commitment of time and energy. However, there are also immeasurable benefits. Many of these benefits are for current and future members of the school community, and for the wider cause of Christian education, but there are also benefits personally for Board members. Kerrie Jackson joined the Board at the start of 2017 and believes that serving as a Board member is a great privilege, and an excellent way of supporting and partnering with staff members in their roles. I now understand so much more of what happens to enable the school to run so well, explained Kerrie, and I have learned (and am still learning) about good governance. Because of my Board involvement, I am realising more deeply how blessed we are in this country to have the freedoms that we do to have a school like Chairo, and how careful we need to be to keep and defend those freedoms, said Kerrie. Kerrie also commented that it has been wonderful to learn more about the other campuses, and to witness the way they are so valued by their families and communities. In addition, she has appreciated hearing about why families choose Christian education, and this has helped further develop her appreciation for what Chairo provides. Those interested in finding out more about joining the Board, and perhaps being put in contact with a Board member, are invited to the Board Support Officer, Darryl Martin, at dmartin@chairo.vic.edu.au in order to commence the process. From the Senior Chaplain Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Psalm 51:12 Psalm 51 is the famous Psalm that David wrote after he had committed adultery and murder (see 2 Samuel 10 11). It is a deeply profound and moving Psalm of confession and repentance, and a plea to God for renewal and restoration. In his plea to God for restoration, David asks for joy. Not once, but three times: Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice (verse 8) Restore to me the joy of your salvation (verse 12). Why does David, in the midst of his confession of horrible sin, ask God three times for joy? Surely it is because David knows something that it is easy for us to overlook: joy is a powerful vaccine against sin. So often, we yield to temptation because of our lack of joy. Without joy, it s easier to think that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. Without joy, temptation becomes more powerful and more enticing. Without joy, we are less likely to be content and satisfied and at peace in Christ. It is good and right for us to pray for joy, as David did. It is good and right for us to teach our children and our students to seek joy in God. It is good and right for our school to be named Chairo, which means rejoice. Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! (Philippians 4:4). May the Lord restore and sustain in us the joy of His salvation, to His glory. Medon Loupis, Senior Chaplain

5 Campus News Traralgon Office Holiday Hours The office at the Traralgon Campus will be closed for the first week on the holidays (Monday 2 to Friday 6 July). It will be open during the second week (Monday 9 to Friday 13 July) of the holidays but will then be closed on Monday 16 July due to a whole-school staff professional development day. Box Club Mrs French has been busy collecting boxes and other recyclables to be used at our Wednesday lunchtime Box Club. The students have enjoyed being creative and helping each other with their recycled inventions, and have come up with some very detailed creations. Thank you, Mrs French, for spending your lunch time with the students each Wednesday. Box Club will continue next term and we are always on the lookout for more items to use. If you have any of the following items at home, we would love to have them: Small boxes Egg cartons Milk container lids Paper towel or glad wrap rolls Take away coffee cup holders Kitchen Garden Years 3 4 students used fresh vegetables from our school garden to make a simple lettuce and radish salad with a creamy dressing. This was a great opportunity for some of our students to try radish for the first time. Students have enjoyed preparing their own food from seed to plate, and were willing taste-testers.

6 Thank You Mr Spink The Prep class would like to thank Mr Spink for cleaning up the dry creek bed in the junior playground. Preps have been doing their investigations outside each Friday and trying to get the water flowing freely in the creek bed. Mr Spink cleared it up and then showed the Preps how they can keep it clean. Preps also washed and cleaned their dinosaurs and made sure everything was clean ready for the school holidays. Kinder Face Painting Fun! Miss Versteden brought lots of smiles to the faces of our Kinder kids today by painting their faces. There were lots of different designs, from Spider-Man to princesses, mermaids to rainbows. The teachers then helped the Kinder children make costumes out of paper to go with their face paint. I m sure you will agree that the kids looked amazing! Thank you, Miss Versteden, for sharing your creative talents. Land was purchased in 1977 but the school commenced in a Brownie hut in 1978, with the first buildings not ready on the Horn Street property until early Enrolments grew steadily and had passed one-hundred by Johanna reflected on some of the challenges that were faced as the school grew, and also on the many positives to the local community including the way in which barriers between local churches were broken down as parents worked together to establish and operate the school. After an exhaustive search for suitable land in the Pakenham area, part of what was referred to as Old McDonald s Farm was purchased. Steve spoke of the significant effort to have the property purchased and rezoned, and the necessary permits in place, for the initial buildings to be constructed in just a few short months. The commitment and hard work of parents and other volunteers was vital, especially in the early years, and growth at the campus each year has been amazing. 10.
