1 WELCOME TO WORSHIP AT CHAPEL LANE! Growing a Faith That Must Be Shared April 17, 2016 Fourth Sunday of Easter/Children s Sunday WE GATHER TO WORSHIP * indicates when those who are able may stand 10:00 AM Welcome! We are glad you are here. As we gather for worship let us keep our conversations to a minimum and then use the time of the Prelude to prepare our hearts and minds for worship. Following worship there will be time for conversation and fellowship. Prelude Ode To Joy C. Maggs (Children s Chimes) Welcome and Announcements We welcome all friends and neighbors into worship today. Our faith tradition invites us to honor God s creation, this day as every day. And, for Christians, in this season of Easter, Jesus resurrection reminds us that the universe is infused with the Spirit of the cosmic and eternal Christ. Hallelujah! Amen! (Please sign the Fellowship Pad and use the prayer request cards for your joys or concerns.) Presentation of Sacred Symbols Here is the cross, a sign of God s love. Jesus is our Savior and Lord, who lived and died and rose again for us. Here is the Bible, the book of faith. Jesus is the Word of God made flesh who came to live among us. Here is the water, a sign of God s grace. Jesus gives us living water so that we may never again be thirsty. Here is the cup, a sign of God s promise. Jesus is the vine and we are the branches, growing together in faith, hope, and love. And here is the candle, the light of Christ. Jesus is the light of the world, showing us God s holy way. Jesus said that he gives eternal life to those who follow him. As we worship God today, let us trust in the Lord, that we too might enjoy the Life that Christ offers. Gathering Prayer Good Shepherd, who leads us beside the still waters and into green pastures, be close to us in our gathering today. Help us to feed on your word, know your protection and be sustained by your Holy Spirit, this day and all days. Amen. * Gathering Song For the Beauty of the Earth #14 Call to Confession God is present to guide us on our journey and eager to forgive us when we get lost. Trusting in that love, let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Please join with me in praying, Prayer of Confession Lord Jesus, sometimes we leave you out of our lives. And sometimes we are disappointed because you don't answer prayers in the way that we wish or as quickly as we would like. We also sometimes refuse to believe that you still act in our lives today, bringing good things to life. Lord, have mercy on us and forgive us, we pray. Amen. (Silent Prayer of Confession) Prayer Response Surely, It Is God Who Saves Me #71 Surely, it is God who saves me; I will trust and not be afraid. For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense, and God will be my Savior. Assurance of Pardon God s mercy is overflowing in our lives. Therefore, know that you are forgiven and that you receive new life in Christ. Amen. * Response of Praise Amazing Grace #649 Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found, was blind, but now I see. WE OPEN OUR HEARTS TO GOD S WORD Prayer for Illumination God of love, You care for us as a Shepherd cares for sheep, leading us to fresh pastures and living waters. You care for us as a Caring Parent, drawing those you love close into your warm embrace. You care for us as a Savior, forgiving all who draw near to you in faith. And you care for us as a Lord and King, bringing us into the heart of your kingdom. God of love, as we hear your Word to us today, open our eyes to your sacrifice of love and
2 open our hearts and minds to hear your wisdom as it tells us of your mercy and goodness. Amen. First Lesson Acts 9:36-43 NRSV pg Response: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Responsive Reading Psalm 23 The Message Translation GOD, my shepherd! I don t need a thing. You have bedded me down in lush meadows, You find me quiet pools to drink from. True to your word, you let me catch my breath and send me in the right direction. Even when the way goes through Death Valley, I m not afraid when you walk at my side. Your trusty shepherd s crook makes me feel secure. You serve me a six-course dinner right in front of my enemies. You revive my drooping head; my cup brims with blessing. Your beauty and love chase after me every day of my life. I m back home in the house of GOD for the rest of my life. Amen. Second Lesson John 10:22-30 NRSV pg. 978 Response: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Children s Sermon The Bucket Brigade Message They ll Know Us By Our Love WE RESPOND TO GOD WITH JOY * Song of Response We Are One In the Spirit #300 * Affirmation of Faith Excerpt from the Declaration of Faith We are certain that Jesus lives. He lives as God with us, touching all of human life with the presence of God. He lives as one of us with God. Because he shares our humanity and has bound us to himself in love, we have an advocate in the innermost life of God. Amen. Morning Prayers, including the Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Offering of our Gifts Offertory I Am His Lamb L. Larson (Children s Choir) The Lord is my shepherd and I am His Lamb. He Leads me and keeps me wherever I am. Through valleys of darkness, to green meadowland; The Lord is my shepherd and I am His lamb. The Lord is my shepherd and I am His Lamb. His rod and His staff are wherever I am. Surrounded by enemies, I m held by His hand; The Lord is my shepherd and I am His lamb. * Offertory Response Awesome God #616 Our God is an awesome God who reigns from heaven above With wisdom, power and love; our God is an awesome God! * Prayer of Dedication of our Offerings Holy God, Divine Shepherd, you offer us green pasture and living water, and your love for us overflows within our hearts. Accept our offerings for the good of the world as we joyfully give thanks for our life in you. In Jesus name, we pray. Amen. WE GO OUT AS GOD S PEOPLE * Sending Song Guide My Feet #741 * Charge and Benediction * Benediction Response May the Love of the Lord #549 May the love of the Lord rest upon your soul. May God s love dwell in you, throughout every day. May God s countenance shine upon you and be gracious to you. May God s Spirit be upon you as you leave this place. * Sharing the Peace of Christ Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with us! May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. (Please greet one another with the peace of Christ.) * Postlude
3 OUR WORSHIP IS ENDED, OUR SERVICE BEGINS! Questions for Reflection What does it mean for you that God has given you life? What does it mean that Christ has given you eternal life? The Call to Confession and Prayer of Dedication are adapted and used by permission of Westminster John Knox Press from Feasting on the Word: Worship Companion The Gathering Prayer and Prayer for Illumination are adapted from one on the Faith & Worship website; used by permission. The Affirmation of Faith is reprinted from the PC(USA) s Book of Confessions; used by permission. ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR THE WEEK OF April 17, 2016 Welcome Friends!
