1 SUNDAY, APRIL 7, 2013 COME DRAW WITH US! Join us next Sunday at 3 pm in Hoffman Hall for the first session of Art and Soul drawing series. It s a class for those of us who don t draw or perhaps think we can t, based on the work of Betty Edwards, who wrote Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. As Edwards sees it, we need to turn down our logical left brain and nurture our creative side so we can develop our ability to see-edges, spaces, relationships, light and shadow, and finally the whole. Once we ve done that, drawing becomes automatic, like riding a bike. We ll do lots of exercises to help us put down on paper what we really see. It won t be like third grade--no praise for the best or humiliation for the worst. Please sign up on the side porch, so we ll know how many budding artists to expect. Questions? Contact Elizabeth Evans at eevans@westwoodpres.org Wilshire Blvd. Los Angeles westwoodpres.org
2 CHECK OUT A NEW MEMBER SEMINAR Twice each year WPC presents an informational series to answer two basic questions about our church--what it means to be a Presbyterian and the benefits and obligations of WPC membership. Your next opportunity to attend a new member seminar is Sunday, April 21, continuing on April 28 and May 5. We meet in Hoffman Hall from 10:15 am to noon. During the three sessions, we explore each person s experience with church and faith, as well as the history of the Christian Church and its traditions. Our pastor and staff also explore the history and basic theology of the Presbyterian Church and specifically the ministry structure of WPC. While there is no obligation to join, those who wish to do so will be welcomed into the congregation, May 19, the day of our annual Congregational Meeting. A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR Following worship this morning, we will be sharing the Lord's Supper with those who are unable to come to church services. Teams of deacons, elders and pastors will be visiting the homebound and taking communion to them. May the love of God and the love of our faith community be present as the supper is shared in homes and at bedsides this afternoon. THANK YOU, CHURCH! I made it to the finish feeling like I knew I would. You all came through like champs with your generous donations to Child Share. My time was 5 hours 11 minutes not too bad, but not as good as I d like. I was 50th out of a hundred fifty-three 65 to 69- year-olds and 10,680th overall. I only had muscle pain for two days after, so I guess I trained properly. I raised nearly $7,000, with plenty of room for more donations. Child Share is going strong, having placed nearly 3000 foster kids in over 900 safe, loving homes. Twenty-six kids that were adopted by Child Share families each ran a mile of the marathon with founder Brian Buchanan. KTLA prominently featured Brian and the kids throughout their coverage. They ran a little slower than I did. I may run with them next year. THANK YOU AGAIN, CHURCH!
3 ANNUAL WPC BLOOD DRIVE RETURNS Life-giving blood is always needed but especially during spring and summer-peak vacation travel times. The blood collected at WPC will be available to local hospitals. So the blood you give on Sunday, April 28, could save the life of someone you know or love. The blood bank will be open in Hoffman Hall from 9 am to 3 pm. Thanks to all who have donated in the past. We hope to see you and a lot of others on April 28! Sign-ups start Sunday, April 7, after each service on the side porch. Sharon Vairo will be available to answer any questions you may have about your eligibility to donate or other concerns. FAMILY RETREAT RESERVATIONS DEADLINE You must sign up by next Sunday to guarantee your spot at the 2013 family retreat at the beautiful Mandalay Beach resort, May 3-5, in Oxnard. Do come to our Hawaiian Luau with all the trimmings including dancing lessons and long days at the beach. There will also be separate adult and children s education classes and a worship service on Sunday. The price is $533 for a family of four, which includes two nights in a garden-view king suite, free breakfast, parking and a pristine beach just over the dunes. Added to that is $39 per adult and $20 per child for the Saturday night banquet. Fliers are available in the narthex, and a member of the children s ministry committee will be on the side porch with more details about the retreat or you can contact ghalterman@westwoodpres.org. EASTER CROSS Caryl Carothers sends a big THANK YOU to all the women who helped decorate our stunning Easter Cross-- Kathryn Ballsun, Bernadette Fields, Meg Gaekle, Mae McAuley, Joyce Bulifant Perry and Claudia Carver Samuels. And a BIG thank you to you, Caryl, floral artist extraordinaire.
4 DANCE AWAY THOSE TAXES BLUES The Congregational Life Committee is happy to host the After-Tax Square Dance on April 20, from 5-8 pm in Hoffman Hall. All are welcome. Wear comfy shoes and clothes and join in the fun! Dinner will be pulled pork sandwiches and a vegetarian option. Sign up on the side porch after services to bring a side dish or soft drink. Line and square dancing will chase away those April 15 blues. See you on the dance floor. MANNA BAG ASSEMBLY UPDATE Next Sunday everyone is invited to help the children assemble the next round of Manna Bags. Our goal is 150 bags which should last us until late summer. Along with all of the other necessities for one day on the streets of Los Angeles, this round of Manna bags will include a card with the addresses and phone numbers of local shelters and rehabilitation centers. On the other side of the card will be a devotional letting the recipients know they have not been forgotten. The children will be most grateful for everyone s help. REMINDERS This Sunday the Flame of Unity will be at St. Andrew s Presbyterian Church, and we will pray for that congregation as others pray for us when the Flame is here. Student Lock-In next Friday in Hoffman Hall at 8 pm. Cost is $10; with a friend, $5 each. Contact travis@westwoodpres.org. This year s VBS will run from 9 am to12 noon beginning June 10 through June 14. The fee is $50.00 per child age 4 to 11 and younger children who have completed one year of preschool. Space is limited to 50. Register at westwoodpres.
