3 2018 CELEBRATION OF MISSION EVENT INSTRUCTIONS AND SUGGESTIONS Welcome to the 2018 Celebration of Mission Event. We celebrate the ONE who calls us to mission will be the 21st year of Celebration of Mission Event gatherings to support our Conference Mission Ministries, which include the Conference Mission Projects, the Church and Community Ministries and the Volunteers in Mission. DATES: It is recommended that Celebration of Mission Events be held on or near the last Saturday of April. Some districts may select optional dates. It is also recommended that districts schedule their C.O.M.E. on a day separate from District Conferences, where possible. Celebration of Mission Events that stand alone usually produce greater results with both monetary and tangible gifts. FOR MORE INFORMATION: ØContact your district office. Each local church is requested to complete at least one fundraiser before the date of the Event. 3

4 The Celebration of Mission Event is: An opportunity for all persons and churches to present the fruits of our faith, labors and commitment to the support of our United Methodist Mission Projects, Church and Community Ministries and Volunteers in Mission. Reaching out to help the needs within our annual conference through local fundraising by making and selling crafts, quilts, food items, and by gathering material goods for mission kits and/or other designated needs. Celebrating the empowerment of the Holy Spirit to do good in this world as the Body of Christ. COME join other congregations in supporting conference missions with your presence the day of the event. All sites will have informative project displays and representatives to share up-to-date information. Many sites will have craft and quilt bazaars, bake sales, refreshments, worship services, various forms of entertainment, auctions and much more. DONATIONS OF GOODS Each Celebration site will be accepting goods for specific conference missions. Please consult the rotation for each year to determine which missions have been assigned to your district. Informational pages for each mission can be found on the pages that follow. We urge you to use these pages to target the specific needs of the missions. Matthew 25:35-36 (NIV): I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty an you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me. 4

5 RESPONSE GUIDELINES MONETARY GIFTS Celebration of Mission Gifts of Money for credit: Monetary gifts from the local church may be sent to the Conference Treasurer in Charleston as they are generated throughout the year. Monetary gifts should be checked in at the Celebration of Mission Event site the day of the event. Make checks payable to the West Virginia Conference Treasurer and send to PO Box 2469, Charleston WV For church credit, all contributions must be written on a church check signed by the local church treasurer. To mail checks to the Conference Treasurer, complete the conference remittance form and note the project number and "COME' on the memo line of the check. Send checks or money orders only to the Conference Treasurer. Do not send cash. Please do not send Celebration of Mission Event money directly to the conference mission ministries. All funds should be sent to the Conference Treasurer. Parish Church & Community Ministry Gayle Lesure #892 Volunteers in Mission-David Stilgenbauer Undesignated Gifts will be distributed using the following formula: ü Up to $2000 deducted for administrative costs if needed. ü 10% of the undesignated gifts total deposited with The United Methodist Foundation for the Conference Mission Projects' Trust Fund. ü The remaining 90% will be distributed to provide equal funding for each mission project and Volunteers in Mission. ü Church and Community Ministries will receive ½ the amount given to Conference Mission Projects and VIM. 5

6 GIFTS OF GOODS TO MISSIONS Please donate only new items (check food expiration dates). All undamaged, commercially packaged foods are appropriate. Home-canned foods cannot be accepted. Collect items on the NEEDS LISTS of your district's target missions and bring to your district's sites. No GOODS donation will be given a monetary value or church financial credit. If you wish to prepare an inventory of items donated (item, cost, amount) for your own records or report to your local church, please do so. Please designate the mission ministry for which you are providing donated items. Donated goods are to be specified for one or more of the projects your district is assigned to support. SALES OF ITEMS AT CELEBRATION OF MISSION EVENTS Record all onsite sales on the fundraising report form provided at the site. All onsite sales are undesignated and will be distributed to mission ministries in accordance with the funds distribution formula. 1 John 3:18 NIV: Let us not love with words or tongue, but with actions and in truth. 6

10 Vicki Ballengee, Executive Director 212 D Street South Charleston, WV executivedirector@hhomwv.org Heart + Hand Outreach Ministries is the mission project of the Midland South District. Established over 50 years ago in South Charleston and from that location also serves St. Albans, Tornado, Dunbar, Institute, and Alum Creek. The Putnam County office was opened three years ago in space provided by Winfield United Methodist Church to provide utility assistance, diapers, formula, and emergency food. In October, 2017, another satellite office was established at Chesapeake City Hall to provide utility assistance to low income families in the Riverside High School District every Friday. Programs include: Food Pantry Thrift Store vouchers for clothing, shoes, household items, and furniture Utility or Rent Assistance Vouchers for new work boots or non-skid shoes for employment purposes. Medical and Vision Assistance Baby Diapers and Layettes Christmas Food, Clothing, and Toys Needs list: Toilet Paper Peanut Butter & Jelly Hand Soap & Shampoo Soups & Canned Pasta Deodorant Breakfast Foods Laundry Detergent Dry Pasta & Canned Spaghetti Sauce Garbage Bags Canned Fruit & Canned Meat Size 4 & 5 Diapers, Pull-Ups, & Baby Wipes Adult Back Packs, Duffle Bags, or Reusable Grocery Bags for carrying pantry food on foot or bus. Please consider a mission trip to Heart + Hand. We need volunteers to help us process donations for our food pantry and thrift store. 10

Brenda Hunt, Executive Director PO Box 128 Philippi, WV Heart and Hand House is located in north central West Virginia, where we provide emergency services to low-income families in Barbour County. Our ministry programs include a food pantry; a backpack feeding program; home repair and construction program; assistance with utilities, rent, clothing and certain medical expenses; providing layettes for newborn babies; and a community garden market. We also operate two thrift stores, one in Belington and one in Philippi. Because of this the project will be limited on the amount of donated items that can be transported back to Wheeling. As a result, the HOC is modifying the donation request list. 15 HOUSE OF THE CARPENTER Michael Linger, Executive Director 200 South Front Street Wheeling, WV Facebook: HouseoftheCarpenter01 The House of the Carpenter is located on Wheeling Island. Because of its unique location, it serves people from across the region. The ministries of mercy include a food pantry, thrift store, utility assistance, home repairs and more. The ministries of transformation include cooking classes, money management programs, after school program, mentoring program, mid-week worship service and the Homes of Promise helping to build a new home on Wheeling Island. Volunteers and work teams to work on any of these projects is always a blessing. Need List Food Pantry: non-perishables of cereal, soup, peanut butter, crackers, tuna and complete meal boxes. 17 TYRAND COOPERATIVE MINISTRIES Belinda Toms, Executive Director PO Box 365 Mill Creek, WV Tyrand Cooperative Ministries, Inc. is a mission project located in Randolph County that offers: Emergency Assistance with rent, utilities and prescriptions Food Pantry, Christmas baskets and Thanksgiving meals Thrift Store - provides clothing and household items Christmas Store - provides toys, underwear and other items and school supplies throughout the year Home Repair Program Day Camp Program Bible School for children (K-6) Bunkhouse is available to youth groups and adult groups for spiritual retreats and mission studies Labyrinth available for those wanting to take a spiritual walk. 18 UPSHUR PARISH HOUSE Alicia Rapking, Executive Director 65 Meade Street Buckhannon, WV The Upshur Cooperative Parish House/Crosslines, Inc, is a mission project powered by prayer and volunteers. Growing out of the need from the 1985 flood we offer medical needs assistance, clothing assistance, rent, utilities, transportation vouchers, layettes. We serve community meals twice a week that are free and open to everyone. We operate the Clothes Closet, a store offering gently used clothing and household items. In the summer we operate a home repair program for families in Upshur County. We operate two community gardens that provide fresh produce for our families and provide new fresh produce for our onsite meals. We are a busy place filled with love and laughter and always looking for ways to meet the needs of God s children. NEEDS LIST: General Needs: Work teams, volunteers, groups to cook and provide community meals Layettes: Sleepers, diapers, diaper bags, receiving blankets, sweater sets, hats, hooded bath wipes, powder, baby oil, bottles and nipples Kid s stuff: Baby car seats and beds Personal Care and Household Items: Personal Hygiene supplies, cleaning supplies, food and school supplies 18

19 SOUTHERN DISTRICT CHURCH AND COMMUNITY MINISTRY "Hope in the Mountains" Joanne Davis Church and Community Worker 213 South Heber Street Beckley, WV "Hope in the Mountains" is a brand new Church and Community Ministry in the Southern District that will minister to the entire district. The ministry is in its infancy and more information will be posted as it is available. In the meantime the districts supporting this ministry in the 2017 Celebration of Mission Event are encouraged to contact Joanne Davis to get a list of items that would be helpful for her ministry. 19

20 GREATER CLARKSBURG COOPERATIVE PARISH Gayle Lesure Church and Community Worker PO Box 2043 Clarksburg, WV The Greater Clarksburg Cooperative Parish consists of 20 United Methodist Churches located across Clarksburg and Bridgeport. The parish conducts training/leadership events for laity and clergy, sponsors youth and children's activities and shares worship experiences. There are 3 food pantries serving the physical needs of the poor and low income families. Several congregations are involved in the backpack feeding program Open Heart Ministries began 7 years ago as a shared outreach project of the Greater Clarksburg Cooperative Parish. The ministry is now an ecumenical partnership, consisting of 20 United Methodist congregations and 11 ecumenical partners. Over the last two years Open Heart Ministries has provided over $100,000 to help more than 2,500 persons with rent and utilities. We praise God for this vital ministry and pray for guidance and strength as we continue our journey serving Christ. 21 VOLUNTEERS IN MISSION David W. Stilgenbaur, Coordinator 355 Pocahontas Avenue Ronceverte, WV (H) (W) or The West Virginia Annual Conference has been organizing work teams since the mid 1970s. The first teams traveled to Central America and the Caribbean. More recently the world has been the parish as VIM Work Teams have traveled to Africa, Europe and Asia, as well as sending work teams to various locations in the USA. As the West Virginia Conference UMVIM Coordinator, David Stilgenbaur is mandated to train and mobilize volunteers for mission, and to provide opportunities and resources for training and support for those going out into the mission field. This year there are presently four mission opportunities scheduled. 1. Puerto Rico Date TBD 2.
