7 Prayers For One Another Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplications for all the saints. Pray also for me... 9 Discussion for Adults Reflection & Discussion What Does It Mean to Be Christian? Sundays, 9:30 am in the Library This DVD discussion features Marcus Borg and several friends who ask faith questions about God, Jesus, Salvation, Practice and Community. Their discussion raises questions for us such as: God September 18 What words help you express the reality of God in your life? What riches grow out of your relationship with God at this time in your life? Jesus September 25 Why does Jesus matter to you? What does it mean to whole-heartedly follow Jesus' call to "Follow me"? How has relationship to the post-easter Jesus changed your life? Salvation October 2 What is your current understanding of sin? What has shaped how you see God, salvation today? What has made it possible for you to move beyond the darkest valleys? Telling Church Good News Media Workshops How do outsiders find out about your ministry? Who are you? Find out how to use web sites, facebook, technology to share God's good news. Workshops are being offered Saturday, September 24, 9 am-12:45 pm at Zion United Church of Christ in Tonawanda. Details are in the brochure on the south entry bulletin board. Water Justice Sundays, 9:30 a.m.in the Chapel September 18 The Web of Life in the Great Lakes The Great Lakes contain one-fifth of the world s fresh water. Besides being a major resource for human use they are home to other living beings. What is the current state of fish and other aquatic life in the Lakes? Randy Snyder is an Associate Professor in the Biology Department at Buffalo State College. His current research involves the health and nutrition of alewives, an important fish in the Great Lakes food web. Randy has been a member of North Presbyterian Church since September 25, 2011 Water for Sale: Water as a Commodity Bottling water privatizes water supplies and moves it from one part of the planet to ship it to another. Documentary films such as Flow, Thirst, Tapped, The Corporation, and A World without Water have publicized the difficulties this has caused for poor and vulnerable communities. What is an appropriate role for private companies in distributing water? We will explore Buffalo s unique private-public partnership in water supply as a way of getting a handle on the issue of access to water. Peter Merlo, a licensed New York State professional engineer, joined the City of Buffalo s Division of Water in 2001 as an associate engineer and became principal engineer in 2005, where he served until his appointment as City Engineer in 2008.

10 MEN S GROUP ACTIVITIES Summary of Men s Group breakfast, September 10, 2011 Domestic Violence Approximately 12,000 phone calls; 450,000 reported annually; 1 out of every 4; ages18-44; 15 seconds; no boundaries; responsibility; and October, These data come from the NYS Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (DV) and from a very informative talk to the Men s Group by Mary Travers Murphy, who is Executive Director of the Family Justice Center. In order, the above statistics refer to: the number of phone calls received in Erie County in 2010 related to DV; approximate number of such incidences reported annually to police in NYS (only 48% are reported); ratio of women touched by DV in their lifetime; DV is the leading cause of injury to women in the U.S. between the ages of 18-44; every 15 seconds someone in the U.S. becomes a victim of domestic abuse; DV occurs across all socio-economic strata; the victims often believe that DV is their fault; Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Erie County (sponsored by the Erie County Committee on the Status of Women: A very informative and alarming breakfast meeting!! Sunday, October 9 [Congregation-wide event] A congregational-wide tour of the old Buffalo Central terminal, sponsored by the Men s Group, has been arranged with the Preservation Buffalo-Niagara Group and NYC Terminal volunteers. We have long wished to arrange this tour, and are delighted to have succeeded (this time). The tour begins at 11:00 a.m., is approximately 2 hours in duration, and costs $10.00 /person. Because this is a Sunday event, Pastor Bill has agreed to hold the first church service at 8:30 in the sanctuary to provide for a larger group who may be going on the tour. Coffee and donuts will be available before the tour, carpooling will be encouraged, and directions will be provided. Sign-up times will be following both services on Sunday, September 25 and October 2. [Check out the terminal s website at Saturday, November 12 [Men s breakfast] It is difficult to imagine, but a billion people on our planet do not have adequate and clean drinking water!! Charity: Water, founded by Scott Harrison, in its 5 year history, claims to have brought clear and safe water to 2 million people in developing nations around the world. For example, they are drilling freshwater wells, rainwater catchments, and sand filters for thousands of people in Africa. And they accomplish this with 100 percent of your donations going directly into their projects. Overhead is covered under a separate charity. Come for breakfast at 8:00 a.m. on November 12, and view a video-media presentation, with follow-up discussion, on how this organization is making a significant difference. And, while you are eating breakfast, imagine what would happen if you had to carry 80 pounds of water in yellow fuel cans for miles to your home, or dig with your children in sand for water, or line up at a well and wait 8 hours for a turn. Again: the time/date: Saturday, 8:00 a.m, November 12. Sign up dates are Sunday, October 30 and November 6. Please plan on joining us." Saturday, November 19 [Congregationwide event] A congregation-wide attendance at a UB Bulls football game is planned. The time will be noon, the opponent will be Akron (Ohio), and the cost will be $10/person (a 60% savings). Should be fun!! More details to follow.

12 On Sunday, October 2 nd North Church will join other churches around the globe in celebrating World Communion Sunday. On this same day, we will also be joining with Presbyterian Churches (U.S.A.) in receiving the Peacemaking Offering. The Presbyterian Peacemaking Offering was created in 1980 to support the efforts of our entire denomination to live out a deeper commitment to peacemaking as a part of our faithfulness to God. As Christians we are called to be agents of reconciliation for individuals, families and communities throughout the world, and for the whole of creation working to build a culture of peace. By making a commitment to peacemaking congregations work toward healing the brokenness in the world. The Peacemaking offering supports the work of congregations, presbyteries, synods and the General Assembly as they work for peace by tearing down walls that divide. 25% of this offering is retained by local congregations to support a peacemaking venture of their choice. The Peacemaking Offering bulletin inserts describe some of these projects. This year in conjunction with our study of Water in the World, North Church will donate its 25% share to ECHO (Educational Concerns for Hunger Organization) to support its mission of honoring God through Sustainable Hunger Solutions. ECHO works to help those working with the poor to be more effective in the area of agriculture through the use of education, innovation and networking. Mary Kasbohm, a member of our congregation and an ECHO Ambassador, will talk about the work of ECHO during the Adult Education class on Sunday, September 25. As Christians we long for a more just and peaceful world where the worth of every person is valued, where greed no longer rules and hunger no longer results, where bullets and bombs no longer devastate. God s Word shows us the way that harvest of justice and righteousness will be sown by peacemakers, planted and nurtured in words and deeds of peace. Please support the Peacemaking Offering generously. A harvest of justice is sown in peace James 3:18 "Dress-A-Girl Sewing Event" Summer is over and we are getting back in the sewing swing of things! Come and enjoy the fun and creativity that is part of Dress-A-Girl! We will be meeting in Westminster Hall on September 26 th from 4:00pm - 8:00pm. Come for as long or as short a time as you are able, enjoy a light supper, and be sure to bring your smile - we do quite a bit of laughing as we cut, iron, pin, clip threads, wind yarn, and sew! We welcome anyone who is interested in helping to make a poor, vulnerable child a new dress and doll - you don't need to be able to sew - we have plenty of jobs for non-seamstresses and seamstresses alike! If you have a portable sewing machine and are able to bring it with you, that is great! If you have scissors, bring them! If you plan to stay for our meal, bring a contribution to our build-a-salad meal. Dessert and beverage will be provided!
