Yes anyone can link a Fry s V.I.P. card to our church, or to any other participating organization. Thanks to Dorothy Young who learned of this opportunity, researched it and brought it to the congregation! organization of laywomen within The United Methodist Church. Using the Internet web site of as a reference we find that the organization is now celebrating 150th years of existence. Commonly known as the UMW, members are committed to growing as children and youth around the world. UMW members try to turn faith, hope and love into through service and advocacy on behalf of women, children, youth and marginalized communities. Locally, at Desert Chapel, they are seen at funeral memorial services, providing food and comfort to those who grieve. They are there at Christmas filing gift boxes for distribution to children in far-flung places. They prepare health care kits that are sent throughout the world. And this list of good deeds could be expanded many times by the description of many things. Our membership is small in numbers but large in spirit. In the calendar months of October through May we meet twice a month, a devotional and social gathering takes place at The Apache Junction Village Inn at 10:30 AM on the first Thursday of the month. On the second Thursday of each month a business meeting is held at Woeller Hall, at 1:30 P.M. During the summer months, June through October, the business meetings are discontinued and we only meet once a month at the Village Inn at the time given above. All ladies are invited to attend our gatherings and commit themselves to the group if they like what we do.
As most of you know, our denomination has been struggling with the question of full participation of LGBTQ persons in the church - questions around ordination, appointment, weddings, etc. At General Conference in 2016 they tabled the whole conversation and tasked the Council of Bishops to find a way to lead us through the questions and get to a place where we can do the work to which God has called us, not distracted or troubled by this issue any more (it's been in the denomination's conversation for at least 40 years). The Council of Bishops identified a group, called The Commission on the Way Forward. They put forward a proposal, and there have been others that have been provided as well. The General Conference in 2019 will discuss and eventually vote on the way for the United Methodist Church to move in the years to come. Our Bishop, Bob Hoshibata, has written a letter and extended an invitation to us all to enter the conversation. Please, read the letter and make plans to attend a Holy Huddle for open, prayerful conversation around this topic. Peace, Pastor Sharon August 1, 2018 Dear Members and Friends of the Desert Southwest Conference, Peace to you in the name and spirit of Jesus who calls us to live in faith, hope, and love! The final report of the Commission on a Way Forward has been officially released to the public. The report is 93 pages long and contains the important background information (how we got to where we are) as well as the text of the plan (One Church Plan) that was supported by a large majority of the members of the Council of Bishops and the other two plans (Connectional Conference Plan and Traditional Plan) that were considered by the Commission on a Way Forward and the Council of Bishops. Reading through these plans is a time-consuming process, but by doing so, you will have a better sense of the nuances of the plans. I encourage you to read through them so that you will be informed about what the breadth of theological differences are in our United Methodist Church. However, let s also remember that numerous other proposals have been officially submitted for consideration by the Special Session of the General Conference in These, along with the plans included in the report of the Commission on a Way Forward, will be subject to debate and amending at General Conference Ultimately, what is adopted at General Conference may be dramatically different from any of these plans. In order to better understand and prayerfully share our thoughts for our Church, I am inviting you to participate in a Holy Huddle on the Future of The United Methodist Church. The Holy Huddles will be helpful to us as we watch what happens in advance of and on the floor of General Conference. The Huddles being planned will consist of two parts. The first part, designed for clergy only, will focus on sharing ideas with the clergy of the Conference about how to lead our congregations with hope amid uncertainty with Christ-like respectful conversations and prayer. The second part of the Holy Huddle will be for both laity and clergy together. The Holy Huddles are open to all persons who want to come and participate in Christian conversations about the future of our church. We will be hearing some background material to set the stage for our Huddles, but much of our time will be spent in conversation around tables, sharing our thoughts with one another. There will also be time for questions from individuals. All of this will be bathed in
a prayerful, worshipful spirit and will include holy communion as the sacramental act which unifies us. Some may ask why so much time is being devoted to these Holy Huddles. I believe we are in a very crucial moment in the history of our United Methodist Church and its predecessor bodies. Although we are not all able to vote on what plan is ultimately adopted by General Conference, we do have the responsibility to be aware of the implications of the plans. It is a privilege to pray and share around tables in Christ-like conversation. We join in expectation that our United Methodist Church will face the future united in hope for our future. I anticipate that we will be better prepared to continue our excellent ministries because we have these moments of Holy Huddle to inform and inspire us, centering us in the hope of Jesus Christ even as we undergo change. Our participation gives hope to our mission and ministry to all God s children in the name of Jesus. A complete schedule of Holy Huddles can be found at the end of this message. I am looking forward to opportunities beginning this Fall to gather together as United Methodists in our Desert Southwest Conference as we discern God s wisdom for us. Our conversations at the Holy Huddles will be part of our step forward into the future for our United Methodist Church. You are an essential participant in that future so I hope you will be present with us! Prayerfully in Christ s love, Bob Hoshibata East District Holy Huddles are: Saturday, October 13, 1:00 pm 4:30 pm at Trinity UMC, 3104 W. Glendale Ave., Phoenix. Saturday, November 17, 1:00 pm 4:30 pm at North Scottsdale UMC, N. Scottsdale Rd., Scottsdale. Trunk or treat is fun because we get to have fun with little kids who come to play! This is our fall outreach to the neighborhood we go door to door inviting people to come and play with us. We serve hot dogs, chips, soda and water, we have games and other activities and this year we will be putting on a spooky maze to mystify and creep out those who dare to enter! This is the perfect opportunity for you to join in this awesome outreach! 8 DISCIPLE is a program of disciplined Bible study focusing on the disciple as learner, believer, follower, proclaimed, servant. DISCIPLE provides the fellowship of the small group for study, prayer, and preparation for servant hood. This year we are offering Disciple Bible Study, Year 2 INTO THE WORD, INTO THE WORLD. The Bible is the primary text and participants are encouraged to open themselves to hearing what God has to say to them through the Bible and to be guided into their particular ministry in the world by Scripture and their study of it. Equal attention is given to Old and New Testaments. Concentration is on four books: Genesis, Exodus, Luke, and Acts, with eight lessons for each book. This 32 week study selects specific portions of Scripture and goes deeper into them. Appropriate connections are made to other parts of Scripture both through reading and study assignments and through the commentary in the study manual. Participants will read familiar passages, seeing them in fresh ways and expecting God to speak through them. Participant information: Class every Wed. 1:00 2:30 p.m. at Desert Chapel UMC, Sept. 5, 2018 May 2019 TBA Student Study Manuals can be purchased from the Church Office. NOTE: Snow Birds are welcome to join us! If you are planning to join the class, please contact me and I will send you a Student Manual so you can complete the lessons you will miss in the fall. 9 Nothing but the Blood of Jesus Robert Lowry There has been a tendency for some singers to reject a hymn that mentions blood but it is suggested that it depends on the context of how often the word occurs. Charles Wesley often used the word blood, not in a gory sense, but as a synonym for grace. The shedding of Christ's blood is equated with expressing his mercy and love. Of course, the first verse of Rock of Ages includes ---let the describes the crucifixion. Despite the connotation of the word in the past, it is incorporated into many songs, especially in evangelical contexts. pardon, cleansing, atonement and righteousness though your sins be as scarlet, they should Jesus' work on the cross. Nothing but the Blood is a classic gospel song as its theme of the cleansing of blood is prominent in gospel song literature. The Old Testament offers the idea of a perfect blood sacrifice to satisfy God's requirement of holiness. Blood atonement such as the sacrifice of animals, were made by priests on behalf of their people.these sacrifices really could never satisfy God's idea for our past, present and future sin. Only the shedding of divine blood would do this and only the sacrifice of His son, Jesus Christ and acceptance of God the Father rests completely upon the merits of the blood of Jesus Christ. What can wash away my sins? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. For my pardon this I see nothing but the blood of Jesus. For my cleansing this my plea, nothing but the blood of Jesus. Nothing can for sin atone: nothing but the blood of Jesus Naught of good that I have done, nothing but the blood of Jesus. This is all my hope and peace, nothing but the blood of Jesus. This is all my righteousness, nothing but the blood of Jesus. O precious is the flow that makes me bright as snow, no other fount I know, nothing but the blood of Jesus. The information for this review came from google.com, AMAXING GRACE by Kenneth W. Osbeck, THEN SINGS MY SOUL, BOOK 2, by Robert J. Morgan, umcdiscipleship.org. And Hymnary.org. Submitted by Eleanor Edwards
All Church Meeting Sunday, September 23, 2018 Written by Jeannine Allen and revised and added to by David Tom Following the Pot Luck brunch, Dave Tom opened the meeting with prayer at 10:40 a.m. Meeting attendance is available in the Church office Dave reminded us that this meeting and meetings going forward will have two parts Discernment telling us we should be doing. Consensus being Committee Reports and/or any New Business that requires a vote from the Members. Reports from the following Committees (Discernment): Finance Jim Edwards and Alice Wagaman Jim reported that the Church is having financial issues. At the request of the loan holder, the credit Wagaman is filling in as Treasurer until January of All Committees need to submit their 2019 begin in October. *A discussion of this fact followed. The following additional information is submitted in lieu of a complete description of the discussion: [Based on an analysis by the finance committee, the September conducted by David Tom, there appears to be a drop-off in attendance of approximately 14% from 2017 to 2018 and a similar drop-off from 2016 to A corresponding shortfall of income from all sources has left the 2018 budget (budgeted funds) approximately $49, short of the 2018 faith reduced the projected shortfall to approximately zero assuming the initial October through December projections are achieved. However, those initial projections are most likely off by about 15% or $ Note that these figures do not reflect repayment of the outstanding loan of $16, plus 2% annual interest on that loan. Therefore the total real shortfall may be approximately $25, for the 2018 year] Note: the above,( within the brackets [ ], was written by David Tom and is his analysis See associated Proposal below Worship Pastor Sharon October. Beginning October 6th at 2:30, Al Pajak will hold a Quiet Service. This service will be held the 1st Saturday of each month. Also, our new Choir Director, Rachelle Starr, will be speaking to the kids regarding a Youth Choir. Missions Jeannine Allen ways that we can partner with other Organizations in AJ. I.E. Multi-Gen Center in their Kids Club. Avalon School with their Fall Festival for next year. Also, bring awareness to the Congregation on ARK Acts of Random Kindness. SPRC Carol Deike Interviewing will begin for a new pianist. Questions were asked as to whether the SPRC had checked with the Finance Committee as to the availability of funds to pay a pianist. Carol stated that the funds were budgeted. Considerable discussion followed regarding budgeted funds vs. available funds. Trustees Nancy Tom Committee is beginning its work on creating their budget for Lots of areas that will be included
i.e. Insurance Deductible of $1,000 in case of damage, Plumbing costs, etc. A decision was made to accept the offer from Deb and Dwight Detlefsen to conduct weed control services on the outside areas of the Church property. At least one bid was considered in the amount of $ to do an initial tree pruning and general cleanup. That bid also estimated a monthly cost of $ to monitor and maintain the property exterior exclusive of weed control and mowing. Those potential costs should be considered in the 2019 budget preparation (should the offer from the Detlefsen s reflected that the custodian would be supervised by a trustee (Keith Hale) and that a comprehensive work/ task list has been created for that position. The SPRC is or will be notified of any changes in this job description. Communications Mike Gray Areas being addressed and worked on include: Mugging, Basket Program, Social Media, Weekly ad in Newspaper and Parenting Letter. Looking for someone to fill in with the Mugging while Peggy is as to the feasibility of the inclusion in the ad. Pastor Sharon may be able to supply such information if she is able to determine the topics in advance of the ad submission deadline. Would like Sunday School teachers to include an update in the Parenting Letter on their Sunday School program. Chargers Jim Edwards and Jim Edwards Continuing with their same schedule of 3rd Saturday of the months November through March for the Pancake Breakfast, and other special meals. Looking for more people to become involved as meeting reflected a discussion of taking-over Cars and Cakes but it is felt that at this time they are unable to do so.. That ends reports Proposal (s): Nancy Tom made a proposal to have a summary of the monthly income received and the amount of expenses paid in each month s Newsletter. The finance Committee will need to implement. No vote was required with this proposal since it was the Consensus of the meeting. Other items of discussion Marilyn Hilau suggested we may want to form a new Committee or Team Fundraising Committee. This Team would be responsible for developing and implementing Fundraising events to help cover Campaign Team may be able to assume such a task since the Capital Campaign is on hold until the immediate budget/stewardship issues are resolved for requires that all committees, teams, and groups rely on candid communications between and among all relevant constituents. An example of this type of communication is the above-mentioned search for a pianist. Since this is a paid staff position, it is incumbent for at least the Worship Committee, feasibility of a hiring decision at this time. Similar discussions should also be held between/among the various responsible entities for any and all budget-impacting decisions. Pastor Sharon closed the meeting with prayer
