Walking in Newness of Life Power in the Spirit 2018 July Roanoke College, Salem, VA What does it mean to baptized? Martin Luther asks and answers this question in his Small Catechism by looking to the words of Saint Paul: We have been buried with Christ by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life (Romans 6:4). At Power in the Spirit 2018, we will explore what it means to be Walking in Newness of Life as God s baptized people. Come and join us as we dive into the mysteries and promises of baptism. Come and reflect on the life that flows from the font and out into the world. Joining us is The Rev. Dr. Sarah Hinlicky Wilson, our keynote presenter who will share themes of holiness and saints. Dr. Wilson is an ELCA pastor and a world -class scholar who often works in ecumenical dialogues with Pentecostal partners. She is also the editor of the quarterly Lutheran Forum and an author of many books and articles. Our Bible study leader will be The Rev. Dr. Mark Allan Powell, Professor of New Testament at Trinity Lutheran Seminary and an internationally-known biblical scholar. His many books include the widely used textbook, Introducing the New Testament (Baker Academic). Dr. Powell will guide us through reflections on the presence and absence of Jesus with his followers in the first century and today. Finally, we are pleased to announce that Sally Moore and the Saint Peter s Praise Band will lead our music! They come to us from St. Peter s Lutheran Church in Stafford, Virginia. Come and learn! Come for fellowship! Come to Power in the Spirit 2018! Power in the Spirit is an inspirational conference for people of all ages who wish to explore God s call to service through joyous worship, Bible studies, keynote addresses, workshops, games, and fellowship. In addition, congregational leaders teachers, organists and choir directors, choir members, committee or council members, family life consultants, pastors, and others will find Power in the Spirit nurturing and challenging as they consider their mission and ministry.

Special Guests The Keynote Speaker! Rev. Dr. Sarah Hinlicky Wilson! The Rev. Dr. Sarah Hinlicky Wilson is an ELCA pastor in the Slovak Zion Synod. For nearly eight years she worked full time at the Institute for Ecumenical Research in Strasbourg, France, specializing in Lutheran dialogue with Orthodoxy and Pentecostal churches. She continues as a visiting professor of the Institute and serves as consultant to the Lutheran World Federation's international dialogue with Pentecostals. She's written a book on the topic: A Guide to Pentecostal Movements for Lutherans (Wipf & Stock, 2016). Wilson has been the editor of the theological quarterly Lutheran Forum for more than a decade, has written well over a hundred articles on theological topics, and lectures around the U.S. and worldwide on topics in Lutheran and ecumenical theology. In August 2018, she will move to Japan to serve as associate pastor at Tokyo Lutheran Church. Her family includes husband Andrew Wilson, who wrote a book about a pilgrimage they took together, Here I Walk: A Thousand Miles on Foot to Rome with Martin Luther (Brazos, 2016). They have one son, Zeke, who loves nothing better than visiting his grandparents and their animals in southwestern Virginia. The Rev. Dr. Mark Allan Powell is Professor of New Testament at Trinity Lutheran Seminary and an internationally known biblical scholar. He is editor of the HarperCollins Bible Dictionary and author of more than 30 books on the Bible and religion, including the widely used textbook, Introducing the New Testament (Baker Academic). The Bible Study Leader! Rev. Dr. Mark Allan Powell! He has also written in the areas of spiritual formation (Loving Jesus), stewardship (Giving To God), and homiletics (What Do They Hear?: Bridging the Gap between Pulpit and Pew). Powell's DVDs How Lutherans Understand the Bible have received widespread use throughout the ELCA and were excerpted for inclusion in the Lutheran Study Bible (Augsburg Fortress). The Band! Sally Moore & the Saint Peter s Praise Band! The Saint Peter s Praise Band provides worship music for contemporary worship services. The group is made up of singers, a drummer, a flute, sax, and piano. We play up-beat and worshipful music to lead patrons in their worship. 4

Kids Welcome! Power in the Spirit is an event for all ages! Children are invited to attend with their parents or guardians, and children ages 3 to 10 have the choice to join in special activities just for them while their grownups attend keynote addresses and workshops. Older kids and teens can help with the younger children, or attend the rest of Power in the Spirit. Children and their grownups will be together for housing, worship, and meals. Renee Durieux of Peace Lutheran Church, Charlottesville, joins us for the second year in a row as leader of this ministry. Contact Pastor Lauren Miller with questions at pastorlaurenmiller@gmail.com or (434) Renee Durieux returns as leader of our children s program! Service Projects! Two to Choose! Funtastic Recess Support for Minnick Schools. Help the Minnick Schools of LFSVA provide a variety of play equipment for their students to use indoors and outdoors during recess time. The schools need an assortment of basketballs, soccer balls, dodgeballs, hula hoops, frisbees, sidewalk chalk, board games, and outdoor game sets. Donating any of these items would be a big help! Monetary donations will be used for larger items such as freestanding basketball hoops and volleyball nets as well as helping to build a playground at our newest school in Bristol. Minnick Schools, the Educational Division of Lutheran Family Services of Virginia, are private day schools serving students ages 5-22 with emotional and developmental disabilities who have not been successful in a traditional public -school setting. Located in Bristol, Wise, Wytheville, Roanoke and Harrisonburg, LFSVA Minnick Schools served 249 students last year from 35 school districts. You can learn more about these schools by going to Want to learn even more? Sign up for the Minnick School elective on page six to hear from an LFSVA Minnick School representative, and to give Pastor Harvey Atkinson a hand with the collection! Conference Choir Returns! Back by popular demand, the Power in the Spirit Conference Choir, directed by George Donovan, will share messages in song for the Thursday evening and Saturday closing worship gatherings. All voice parts are needed, especially men. This is an excellent opportunity for singers, directors, and musicians from our Synod to join together and connect. The choir will practice outside of the workshop times. Rehearsal schedule will be announced at opening on Thursday afternoon. Won t you join us?! Sign up as you register! Habitat for Humanity! Back, by popular demand: join Pastor Paul Henrickson on a work excursion with Roanoke area Habitat for Humanity and help build a house. Sign up for this elective on page eight. Bring work clothes and a sense of humor! ACTS! Reunion Meal There will be an ACTS! reunion dinner on Friday, July 13, in the back section of Sutton Commons in the Colket Center. Please indicate on your registration form if you plan to attend. 5

Concurrent Sessions: A Friday, July 13, 10:30 11:45 AM A1 Loving Jesus in a Complicated World The Bible consistently refers to Christians not only as people who "believe in Jesus" or who "follow Jesus" but as people who love Jesus. What does it mean to "love Jesus" and how do we do that in the world today? Is it just a matter of "loving other people" or "keeping his commandments"? Does worship have something to do with it? In this workshop (led by the author of Loving Jesus, Fortress, 2004) we will look at key biblical texts that tell us what it means to be people who love Jesus in the world today. The Rev. Dr. Mark Allan Powell, Professor of New Testament, Trinity Lutheran Seminary A2 Creating a Rule of Life: How to Walk in Newness of Life without Going in Circles Walking in newness of life? Don't get stuck in the fog! Create a personal GPS a "rule of life" to guide you through a world of distraction and transition. A rule of life comes from the monastic practice of writing down your voluntary commitments to guide important decisions as well as daily life, in order to better live out your vocations. Your rule of life can encompass anything from spiritual practices you're committing to, to how you use technology. We will explore what a "rule of life" is (and is not!), and get started on creating our own. Bring materials to write with (analog or digital, your choice). The Rev. Anna Havron, Mountain View Parish, Woodstock A3 Service Project: Funtastic Recess Support for Minnick Schools Come and learn about the LFSVA Minnick Schools recipient of our Power in the Spirit service project! We ll be collecting playground and gym equipment for the schools. Minnick Schools, the Education Division of Lutheran Family Services of VA, serve students ages 5-22 with emotional and developmental disabilities. In addition to hearing from LFSVA Minnick School leaders, you ll also have a chance to help pack up the playground equipment donations for the schools. The Rev. Harvey Atkinson, Mount Rogers Parish A4 A New Song: Hymn-writing for Personal Devotion & Public Worship Hymns teach us, comfort us, and help us ponder God. How can disciples with no musical training also sing new songs to the Lord as prayer and witness? Let's explore the joy and the tools of creating new hymns. We'll sing out as beginners: no music theory required! The Rev. Joel Neubauer, Saint Mark, Yorktown A5 Final Healing Join experienced professionals for a discussion of hospice, end of life concerns and answers to the following: Will you be there to hold my hand? Won't morphine hasten my mother's death? Why can't I do this on my own? What is a good death? Can I still eat my Snicker's bar? How do I avoid saying the wrong thing to someone who is grieving? Seth McCormick, Carilion Clinic Hospice Chaplain, Roanoke Sue Huntington, Carilion Clinic Hospice Volunteer Coordinator, Roanoke Shanna Flowers, Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital Volunteer Manager, Roanoke A6 For the Soul of the People the Nazi Persecution of the Church This class will be based on the years , and how the Nazis captured the church for its own purposes. Any Christian living in a period of persecution of their beliefs, whether it be from a dictatorial form of government, or simply a cultural shift, will find this course both of interest and of value, as to what one is up against in defending their faith. The Rev. Donna Ruggles, Lutheran Pastor Serving at Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Richmond A7 What s Bowen Got to Do with It? Dr. Murray Bowen made an interesting discovery in the early days of his practice. When he invited whole families to share in the counseling sessions he got better results than just dealing with an individual. This started him down the road to developing Bowen Family Systems Theory (BFST). Now many pastors and lay leaders are being trained to raise their functioning in their congregations and their own families. The Rev. Bill Nabers, Shenandoah County 6

Concurrent Sessions: B Friday, July 13, 1:30 2:45 PM B1 Getting to Know the Lutheran Saints Also offered in Block D. What? Lutheran saints? Outrageous! While it true there is no canonizing organization within Lutheranism, it's also true that particular Lutheran individuals have been remembered, honored, and upheld as models for the Christian life a practice that goes back to the earliest church. Dietrich Bonhoeffer is the most popular example, but there are many other amazing Lutheran saints well worth knowing. Come and get to know some extraordinary witnesses to the gospel! The Rev. Dr. Sarah Hinlicky Wilson, Editor of Lutheran Forum, Visiting Professor of the Institute for Ecumenical Research, and (soon!) Pastor at Tokyo Lutheran Church B2 The Gift of Biblical Storytelling Come hear more about Biblical storytelling;; how it is a gift, a form of Bible study, a way to share the word. Come hear stories, and learn how to tell a story by yourself. Dr. Judy Wilfong, Muhlenberg Lutheran Church, Harrisonburg The Rev. Chris Carr, Christ the King Lutheran Church, Richmond B3 Choral Reading We will explore anthems focused on smaller ensembles. This will include unison, 2-part and 3-part pieces. Come join us and get a jump start on planning for your next "church year." A variety of styles will be included, most anthems will be easy or moderately easy with the goal of being used by many! Kevin Barger, Director of Music Ministry, Epiphany Lutheran Church, Richmond B4 The Psalms in Worship Today: Ever Ancient, Ever Now Come and explore the history and importance of the Psalms. Learn why they are a part of the designated scripture selections, why they are usually to be sung/ intoned, how to include them with reverent meaning but easy access, AND, how to include them with pizzazz, changing up their presentation to keep it interesting, even exciting! Karen Adams, College Lutheran Church, Salem B5 Congregating Digitally- Churches and Social Media How can we make an impact in digital social spaces as the church? What are some of the first steps you should take when you re just getting started making a presence online? Learn how congregations big and small can plan their communication strategies using social networking services like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, and the value these sites can bring to your congregational community. Emily Pilat, Director of Communications, Virginia Synod, ELCA B6 The Camino: It May Kill You This ancient pilgrimage across Spain affords a unique opportunity to share the love of God with people from all over the world. We did just that both as pilgrims and as guest house servants. Each of which presented vastly different circumstances, and none of it for the tenderfoot. Lynn Loftus, Pulaski, Virginia B7 Baking Bread and Breaking Bread We discuss bread and its many incarnations over the years in the church, followed with a demonstrations and opportunity to get your hands into the dough. Kidfriendly, and the bread we make will be served at the sending communion service on Saturday. Jennifer John, Christ Lutheran Church, Richmond B8 How to Become a Reconciling in Christ Congregation or Individual Learn about ways to explore becoming a 'Reconciling in Christ' (RIC) congregation: to be open, affirming, and welcoming of the LGBTQ communities. Become familiar with a variety of resources useful for a congregational exploration of how you may want to identify your welcoming status and how you can make it known. We will also reflect on the benefits of being clearly welcoming to all people. The Rev. Sandy Wisco, a Reconciling Lutheran since

Come get to know our new bishop a little better and spend some time sharing ideas and faith. Bishop Bob Humphrey, Virginia Synod, ELCA C2 The Agrarian Message of Amos, Hosea and Micah Scripture critiques industrial agriculture and re-roots us in the land.
