3 Expanded my mind and opened my eyes. Words can t express it! Very inspirational powerful! The whole experience was uplifting. Power in the Spirit is an inspirational conference for everyone who wishes to explore God s call to service through joyous worship, Bible study, keynote addresses, workshops, and fellowship. In addition, congregational leaders teachers, organists and choir directors, choir members, committee or council members, family life consultants, pastors, and others will find Power in the Spirit nurturing and challenging as they consider their mission and ministry. By God s Grace: This is most certainly true! At Power in the Spirit 2016, we will dwell in the mysteries of God s grace with knowledgeable speakers and celebrate God s promises with top-notch musicians. The powerful insights of Martin Luther s Small Catechism will guide our presentations, our Bible studies, our discussions, and our worship throughout our retreat. Dr. Kit Kleinhans, a Luther expert from Wartburg College; the Rt. Rev. Ted Gulick, an Episcopal Bishop; and Jonathan Rundman, a talented musician and worship leader who tours the country; will guide us as we experience the certain truth of God s grace. 4 Special Guests KEYNOTE SPEAKER The Rev. Dr. Kathryn A. Kleinhans is the Mike and Marge McCoy Family Distinguished Chair in Lutheran Heritage and Mission at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, where she has taught since She is an ordained pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America who holds a Ph.D. from Emory University, an M.Div. from Christ Seminary Seminex, and a B.A. from Valparaiso University. Her scholarship focuses on the contemporary relevance of Martin Luther and Lutheran confessional theology. An eager student of global Lutheranism, she leads a series of ELCA international seminars for women from Lutheran churches in the Global South and the former communist bloc. Dr. Kleinhans describes herself as having one foot firmly planted in the 16th century and the other firmly planted in the 21st century. In addition to her scholarly publications, she is eager to make Lutheran theology relevant for Christians today through popular articles and devotional writings. Her Lutheranism 101 remains the most frequently requested reprint in the history of The Lutheran magazine. She and her husband, Pastor Alan R. Schulz, are the parents of two adult sons, Christopher and Paul. BIBLE LEADER Bishop Edwin Gulick Jr. is the Assistant to the Bishop for the Episcopal Diocesan since He previously served as the Bishop for the Diocese of Kentucky from Bishop Gulick served as a parish priest for 20 years before his election as a bishop. He received a B.A. from Lynchburg College and an M.Div. from Virginia Theological Seminary. In 2008, Gulick earned the distinction as the first Episcopal bishop to head two dioceses simultaneously when he was asked to serve part-time as the provisional bishop of Diocese of Fort Worth. In the wider church, he takes an active role in ecumenism. He has served two terms on the Standing Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Relations, co-chaired the Anglican Roman Catholic Dialog USA from 1997 to present, and served as one of the Episcopal Church s representatives on the Consultation on Church Union In 2001, he was appointed by Archbishop George Carey to serve on the International Anglican Roman Catholic Commission on Unity and Mission, which is an ongoing commitment. MUSICIAN Jonathan Rundman grew up in Michigan s Upper Peninsula. He has written songs and performed across the country since he was 18 years old. Jonathan emerged on the national music scene as a Chicago-based touring artist, generating rave reviews in Billboard, The New York Times, Performing Songwriter, Paste, and numerous regional publications. Now living in Minneapolis, he continues to tour and record. Jonathan s songs can be heard on radio stations across America, in Scandinavia and England, and have been featured on television s The Ellen Degeneres Show and CBS This Morning. He has performed live on NPR s Mountain Stage radio show, and on Iowa Public Television. Jonathan released a new album titled Look Up. It marks a mature new phase in Jonathan s critically acclaimed discography. These ten songs explore themes of technology, linear time, and optimism, and draw from his diverse musical influences, including Americana, Nordic folk music, and 1980s New Wave pop. 2

6 Concurrent Sessions A FRIDAY, JULY 15 10:30 A.M. A1 Teaching the Faith with Luther s Catechism Hymns Martin Luther wrote hymns to accompany each of the chief parts of the Catechism. Participants will examine the theology of Luther s Catechism hymns and will leave with resources to conduct a hymn study in their own congregations. Dr. Kit Kleinhans Wartburg College, IA A2 A Tree Is Not a Forest In Madagascar, the culture s foundation is built on community. The Malagary proverb, Ny hazo Tokana tsy mba ala, reminds us that when only one tree stands, there is no forest, but when many stand together, a forest is born. If we stand alone, there is no community; but if we stand together, we are the Body of Christ. Join in listening to and sharing stories about what God is up to in the world as Pastor Propst shares his narrative about being a missionary while coordinating the Young Adults in Global Mission program in Madagascar. Tongason rehetra all are welcome! Pastor Austin Propst Redeemer, Bristol A3 Micah s Backpack, Part 1 Want to experience the joy of serving children in need and proclaim the Word of God? Then this familyfriendly, intergenerational workshop is just for you! Learn how the Micah s Backpack group at Roanoke College provides for children in the area through a weekend feeding program. Bring your family to decorate and pack a bag with food and enclose a note of encouragement for a child in need. This workshop is open to anyone, but geared to families with children. Dr. Phyllis Milton Gloria Dei, Hampton Pastor Chris Bowen Chaplain, Roanoke College A4 Tapestry: Diversity and Inclusion by God s Gracious Design Just as a tapestry is made of diverse threads, our neighborhoods are made of a diverse blend of people forming a beautiful whole. You will learn about the resources available through Tapestry (the steering team for diversity and inclusion in the Virginia Synod), how to recognize barriers to diversity in your congregation, and ways to encourage inclusion so that all may share in the Good News. The Tapestry Team St. Paul, Hampton A5 Remembering Massanetta Summer Assembly, Luther League, and Light Brigade Organizations of the old Virginia Synod left a lot of memories. Come join this workshop as we try to recall some of them! George Kegley St. Mark, Roanoke A6 The Soul of Money: A Book Review and Discussion The author of this book, Lynne Twist, worked for more than 20 years as an executive for The Hunger Project, a worldwide service organization. Her travels led to conversations with such notable people as Mother Teresa, the Dalai Lama, and some of the richest and poorest people in the world. We will visit some of these conversations. Her insights on money and our handling of money will lead participants to a time of self-examination. Do our actions line up our perceived core values? By God s Grace, we are gifted. How do we use these gifts? Ellen Hinlicky and Cary Mangus Stewardship specialists for the Virginia Synod 4

How might Martin Luther s Small Catechism help us? Might this familiar instructive tool inform our lives of worship? Bill Franz Professor of physics, Randolph-Macon College B5 Millennials and the Church: Reaching Out to the Largest Generation Much has been said about millennials and the decline of the church, including doomsday prediction about the end of organized religion and Christianity as we know it. Join the Rev. Canon Connor B. The workshop will conclude with some thoughts on reaching out to this enigmatic generation. Rev.
