ORDER OF WORSHIP August 5, th Sunday after Pentecost/18 th Sunday in Ordinary Time Please sign and pass the Friendship Book ( pew pad ) where you can also record any prayer requests. Our prayer is that you will experience the presence of the Living God as we worship together. We invite you to focus your heart and mind in worship. * indicates please stand as you are able. WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS Jason Stuart PRELUDE Be Still My Soul Piano Jean Sibelius, arr. Kevin Olson CALL TO WORSHIP Jason Stuart Give thanks to the Lord, proclaim God s greatness. Tell the nations what God has done. Sing praise to the Lord. Tell the wonderful things God has done. Be glad that we belong to God. Let all who worship God rejoice. The Lord is our God; God s commands are for all the world. God will keep his covenant forever, God s promises last for a thousand generations. Praise the Lord! based on Psalm 105:1-3, 7-8, 45, TEV Reprinted by permission from The Worship Sourcebook, 2004, Faith Alive Christian Resources *SONGS OF WORSHIP: THE CHURCH S ONE FOUNDATION (Hymn #689) (VERSE 1) The church s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord; she is his new creation by water and the word; from heaven He came and sought her to be his holy bride; with his own blood he bought her and for her life he died. (VERSE 2) Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war, she waits the consummation of peace forevermore; till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest, and the great church victorious shall be the church at rest.

(VERSE 3) Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won: O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we, like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with Thee. KNOWING YOU (VERSE 1) All I once held dear built my life upon All this world reveres and wars to own All I once thought gain I have counted loss Spent and worthless now compared to this (CHORUS) Knowing You Jesus knowing You There is no greater thing You're my all You're the best You're my joy my righteousness And I love You Lord (VERSE 2) Now my heart's desire is to know You more To be found by You and known as Yours To possess by faith what I could not earn All surpassing gift of righteousness (CHORUS) (VERSE 3) Oh to know the pow'r of Your risen life And to know You in Your sufferings To become like You in Your death my Lord So with You to live and never die (CHORUS) CCLI Song No Make Way Music (Admin. by Music Services, Inc.) The sign of the cross

points to our exodus from bondage to sin. Let us repent, seek God s forgiveness, and enter into new life in Christ. Prayer of Confession Holy One, whose love and justice condemn us, whose mercy and kindness feed us, we confess our sins and pray for your forgiveness. What terrible suffering we have unleashed. We have used other persons without regard for their dignity; we have abused the earth without care for its beauty or concern for future life; we have sought to bargain with you to smooth our way to heaven. God, change us. Put the Spirit of Christ within us and cause us to grow into mature, faithful disciples of the one who came from you to save us from our sin. Free us from captivity to our selfishness, bind us to the whole body of Christ, and let us bear witness to the truth that your love holds everything together in perfect unity. We pray in the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen. [Silent Prayer] Declaration of Forgiveness The bread of life God sends is the offering of the only begotten Son. Whoever comes in Jesus Christ shall never be hungry; whoever believes in him shall never thirst.

Believe the gospel; in Jesus Christ our sins are forgiven. Amen. Reprinted by permission of Westminster John Knox Press from Feasting on the Word worship Companion SONG OF WORSHIP: PLEASE REMAIN SEATED JUST AS I AM, WITHOUT ONE PLEA (Hymn #445) (VERSE 1) Just as I am, without one plea but that thy blood was shed for me, and that thou bidd st come to thee, O Lamb of God, I come! I come! (VERSE 2) Just as I am, and waiting not to rid my soul of one dark blot, to thee whose blood can cleanse each spot, O Lamb of God, I come! I come! (VERSE 3) Just as I am, though tossed about with many a conflict, many a doubt, fightings and fears within, without, O Lamb of God, I come! I come! (VERSE 4) Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind, sight, riches, healing of the mind, yea, all I need in thee to find, O Lamb of God, I come! I come! (VERSE 5) Just as I am, poor, thou wilt receive, wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve; because thy promise I believe, O Lamb of God, I come! I come! PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Rev. Peter Blank OFFERING OF OURSELVES & OUR GIFTS Lois Robertson Reprinted by permission of Westminster John Knox Press from Feasting on the Word worship Companion Invitation to the Offering The worship God blesses

is honest and personal, a broken and contrite heart. When we give of ourselves to God, our hearts are changed for good. Let us present tithes and offerings. *Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below Praise him above ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. Prayer of Thanksgiving/Dedication O Trinity, your love creates us, your passion saves us from sin, your power transfigures us into glory for you. Thank you for giving us a place in your good creation, for giving us the bread of heaven to free us from slavery to sin and death and for filling us with the holy light of the gospel for the building up of Christ s body in love. We present offerings to praise you and to help in the service of the church. Accept them as outward signs of our joyful discipleship in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen. Reprinted by permission of Westminster John Knox Press from Feasting on the Word worship Companion Please be seated as the ushers pass the offering plates. Offertory Meditation on Blessed Assurance Piano Phoebe Knapp, arr. James Pethal READING OF THE SCRIPTURES Diana Blank Psalm 51:1 12 (NIV) (page 562 in your pew Bible) 1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.

2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge. 5 Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. 6 Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place. 7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. 10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Ephesians 4:1 16 (NIV) (p in your pew Bible) 1 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. 7 But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. 8 This is why it says: When he ascended on high, he took many captives and gave gifts to his people.

9 (What does he ascended mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions? 10 He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.) 11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. MESSAGE Worthwhile Living Rev. Peter Blank *SONG OF WORSHIP: BREAD OF THE WORLD IN MERCY BROKEN (Hymn #774) Bread of the world in mercy broken, wine of the soul in mercy shed, by whom the words of life were spoken, and in whose death our sins are dead: look on the heart by sorrow broken, look on the tears by sinners shed;

and be your feast to us the token that by your grace our souls are fed! SHARING AROUND CHRIST S TABLE COMMUNION Rev. Peter Blank Christ becomes a part of our flesh through Holy Communion. The Lord s Supper is not an end in itself. It always points beyond itself to celebrate God s grace and covenant faithfulness. This does not mean the physical aspects of the celebration are incidental or unimportant. The Lord s Supper should be a celebration fitting to the abundant grace of God offered in Christ. Invitation to the Lord s Supper Breaking of the Bread & Pouring of the Cup Sharing the Body and Blood of Christ *CLOSING SONG It is the custom at Knox, in celebration of Holy Communion, to hold hands and form a circle around the sanctuary to sing our closing song BLEST BE THE TIE THAT BINDS (Hymn #708) Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love; the fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above. BENEDICTION Rev. Peter Blank POSTLUDE Congregation & Piano I VE GOT A RIVER OF LIFE (VERSE) I've got a river of life flowing out of me! Makes the lame to walk, and the blind to see. Opens prison doors, sets the captives free! I've got a river of life flowing out of me! (REFRAIN) Spring up, O well, within my soul! Spring up, O well, and make me whole! Spring up, O well, and give to me That life abundantly

Unverified / Words and Music by L. Casebolt / HigherPraise.com * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * In the pulpit today: Rev. Peter Blank is Knox s Temporary Supply Pastor. He and his wife Diana arrived in Spokane last August to help take care of Diana s aging father. Peter has previously served congregations in central California, rural Nevada and NW Oregon. After arriving, he has been busy training and becoming licensed as a Home Inspector in the Spokane area. Peter has a passion for learning and discipleship training. He is graduate of Pacific Lutheran University and Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary. With Diana, they have 5 grown children in their blended family scattered along the west coast; as pet lovers, they have two dogs and a cat. They love the Spokane area for outdoor hikes and lakeside fun. Today s Lectionary Readings 2 Samuel 11:26 12:13a Ephesians 4:1 16 Psalm 51:1 12 John 6: Question for Reflection In what specific situation is God calling you to exercise humility, gentleness, patience, forbearance, and love? Household Prayer: Morning Holy, holy, holy Lord, God Almighty, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, your love endures forever. I am like the flower that blooms in its season, watered by the earth and morning dew. You send the sun and rain, morning, midday, and evening,

giving light and life. Thank you for protection through the night; thank you for your presence in the dawn. Renew my strength this day and let me love you with all my heart and soul and might. Bear with me as I bear my cross for Christ, for I know that I will falter. You remember that I am only dust, but you have breathed your Spirit into me and my face is renewed. How can I show my gratitude? Grant that I may be one with the mind of Christ, loving my neighbor as myself and giving as freely of myself as you have given yourself to me. Guide me today to serve in deep peace wherever there is need for healing or hope. Use me to show others that you are the power who transforms the world and that you are the One who saves sinners. This day and this night, in this life and in the life to come, let me live in you to praise you, God who is three, God who is one. Amen. Household Prayer: Evening The day has run its course, evening lights are coming on, and you are still with me, unseen, God. You have been so quiet, like the sun or misty rain or the whisper of a light breeze across my skin. Yet you gave me life today to be in your presence, and you gave me faith enough to hope that I might be serving you.

You, who makes the universe (or, if there are multiverses, so be it), you, who turned a Roman weapon of torture and terror into the ultimate sign of salvation, you have been like a friend to me. Thank you. As I take moments to reflect on the day, write in my journal, or pray even now, I am sure there are ways you have cared for me of which I am insensitive or unaware. I am sure there are things I have done and other things I failed to do that made you justly angry with me. I am sorry; please forgive me. Do not let the darkness envelop me tonight. Embrace me with your light so that I can be at peace with you, restored. Prepare me for tomorrow, and for the day of resurrection, when all creation will rejoice in your glory, Holy Trinity. Amen. The Morning & Evening Household Prayers and Questions for Reflection are reprinted by permission of Westminster John Knox Press from Feasting on the Word Worship Companion. 2015
