Let us confess our sins to God, that we might receive mercy. Laverne Meekhof Prayer of Confession We know the commandments: You shall not murder; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; honor your father and your mother. We are sure we follow them, but instead, we cannot let go of the things we think we need or what we think is important. We do not follow you, or love you, O God, with all our hearts, our minds, our strength. We refrain from giving our whole selves to you. Forgive our disobedience, our lack of commitment, and our desire to focus on material things

4 instead of on your will for us. In the name of our Teacher, Jesus Christ, who gave his whole life for the sake of the gospel. Amen. [Silent Prayer] Declaration of Forgiveness We do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weakness, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. BENEDICTION Nick Robertson POSTLUDE Postlude in B Organ Joseph Prentiss ********************************************************* In the pulpit today: Nick Robertson is an elder and longdistance member of Knox Presbyterian Church. He received his bachelor s degree in History from Westmont College in Santa Barbara, CA. He married his zookeeper wife, Becca, in May They recently moved out of state for her career and own a home in Fountain, CO. Nick works as a service coordinator for people with disabilities, working to empower people s lives and create a lasting culture of social justice and

8 equality. While not working, Nick enjoys reading and playing with his dogs, Tucker and Forrest. Nick s biggest passions in life are music, literature, philosophy, board games, and apples. Today s Lectionary Readings Job 23:1 9, Hebrews 4:12 16 Psalm 22:1 15 Mark 10:17 31 Questions for Reflection How do you talk to God when you feel that God is not listening? How can you be a better disciple, considering the radical words of Jesus in Mark that you have to sell all you own, give the money to the poor, and then follow him? Household Prayer: Morning As I open my eyes, I want to feel your Word, living and active and guiding my way. I want to live knowing that what is impossible for me is possible for you. I want to live with the certitude that those who are first will be last, and the last will be first. Give me the courage and the hope to live with your words in my mind for the rest of the day. In Jesus Christ, my teacher, I pray. Amen. Household Prayer: Evening As I lay down to rest, I look at the times in my day when my heart has felt like fainting, and I have felt like arguing, but I do so with the understanding

9 that even in my deepest sorrow you were with me. Thank you, God, for understanding and for helping this human being who, if imperfectly, strives to seek out your face, to follow your will, and to understand your Word. Give me the rest I need to live day by day and step by step. In the name of my example and my strength, Jesus Christ. Amen.
