2 Pastor Pondering As I write this article, our family has been here for a month and a half. That s six short weeks. We have enjoyed the Fourth of July parade, the waterpark, the Jay County Fair, the Jay County Marching Patriots, and so much more! We re gearing up for the Antique Engine and Tractor Show and will be able to give our report by the time this goes to print. We continue to find more to add to our list of things we love about Portland and hope you will continue to share those opportunities with us! I also am continually learning more about Asbury UMC. Just this week, I got a tour of many of the nooks and crannies of the church and am continually amazed at the beauty of the architecture here. I have had the opportunity to listen to many of you share your hearts for this church and community, and I look forward to hearing many more stories as our Meet and Greets kick into full-swing. If you find yourself with a free lunch hour and are interested, I d love to meet you for a quick bite to hear more about your story and/or Jay County. (Send me an allison@asburyministries.org or call the office: to set up a time.) In worship, we have been hearing stories of people taking great risks, following the call of God, and learning to love their neighbors. We have been asked to consider what it looks like to love without exception and have begun to look at what might be next for Asbury UMC. As we dive into September, we will hear several stories about Jesus and the Sea in a sermon series entitled If Fish Could Talk. If you haven t discovered already, video versions of the sermons are available on the church website ( and our Facebook page ( Our family has truly enjoyed our first glimpses at life in Portland, and we continue to look forward to getting to know each of you and serving together in ministry. Pastor Allison New Sunday School Class to Begin On Sunday, September 10, Pastor Allison will be kicking off an adult Sunday School class studying The Bible Jesus Read by Philip Yancey. Together, we will explore the sometimes shocking and cryptic writings of the Old Testament to help readers know God better. We will not only ask if the Old Testament is worth it, but we will also cover five crucial segments of the Old Testament: Job, Deuteronomy, Psalms, Ecclesiastes, and The Prophets. We'll meet in the, and hope you'll consider joining us! Questions? Contact Pastor Allison via (allison@asburyministries.org) or phone ( ).
3 Hello Asbury! I am so happy to be here! In the coming days, I cannot wait to get to know each one of you and to work together to bring exciting changes to programming and, more importantly, to the lives that are affected by how we live out Jesus mission in this community! As a quick introduction for those I have not yet met, I describe myself as a follower of Jesus, theologian author, blogger, editor, educator, wife, mom, and aspiring peacemaker. I have been involved in ministry for 20 years, working with children, teenagers, young families, and adults of all ages. I am passionate about intergenerational ministries, because I think we all benefit from living in community! I write (and podcast) about theology, the sacraments, and ministry to the least of these at Flip Flops, Glitter, and Theology (.com). My love language is vacation (especially Disney), and I enjoy coffee and reading in large quantities! In the next few weeks, I am really looking forward to creating a children s worship space, adding children s Sunday School to our Asbury curriculum, introducing teen Bible quizzing, painting my office, and unpacking my boxes upon boxes of books! My family is also looking forward to getting moved to Portland, because the 90 minute drive has been a challenge! If we haven t had a chance to connect yet, please look for my airplane and Wonder Woman name tag on Sunday! I would love to chat! Blessings, L. Michaels Important Upcoming Dates: Sunday, August 27: Youth Group 4:00 p.m. Sunday, August 27: Concert at Westchester UM, teens, 6:15 p.m. Sunday, September 3: No Children s Church, No Youth Group Sunday, September 10: Children s Sunday School in the Children s Sanctuary! 9:00 a.m.

5 Do you have high cholesterol or high blood pressure? Have members of your family suffered from these ailments? Do you have a poor diet? If you answer yes to any of these questions, you may want to consider being screened through the services of Life Line Screening. Life Line Screening uses ultrasound technology to view the plaque build up in your carotid arteries, the main arteries that carry blood to the brain. Blockages in these arteries are a leading cause of stroke. We are pleased to host this Life Line Screening event on 9/8/2017 at Asbury United Methodist Church. Register for a Wellness Package which includes 4 vascular tests and osteoporosis screening from $149 ($139 with our member discount). All five screenings take minutes to complete. In order to register for this event and to receive a $10 discount off any package priced above $129, please call or visit communitycircle<urlblockederror.aspx> or text the word circle to Starting in September Children s Sunday School!! Children s Sunday School is starting September 10! Children in Kindergarten through 5 th grades can join us in the Children s Sanctuary (room 6, upstairs) at 9:00 a.m. for worship, games, prayer, and Scripture, all presented in a kid friendly format! We are so excited about the changes coming to Asbury in our children s ministries department, because children are the church not just the future of the church, but the church right now! Hope to see you there! Food Pantry Fundraiser Community and Family Services will be hosting a Coffee and Canvas fundraiser for the Helping Hands Food Pantry. The Food Pantry currently has a critical need for donated goods, shelf stable items, and financial resources. The Coffee and Canvas fundraiser will be on Saturday, October 28 at the Jay County Event Center from 5-7pm. Cost is $25 per ticket and includes instructed painting, snacks, and specialty drinks from Joe on the Go! Mark your calendars for this great event! Additionally, they are looking for a person or group who would be willing to provide fruit or sandwiches (or maybe both!) for those in attendance. If you'd like to help out, or simply need tickets, please contact Carly with Community and Family Services at
