5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, Term did 2 Week not consider 5 equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; 7 rather, 26 He May made 2017 himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death even death on a cross! Philippians 2:5-8 (NIV) Term 3 Week 7 14 September 2018 Our Vision To foster a Christ centred learning community where all students receive an education which enables them to know the Lord Jesus Christ, grow in Him and serve Him to their full potential. PRINCIPAL S MESSAGE The Creation Account We often think of Creation as being the beginning of the earth, mankind and the Garden of Eden. Genesis 1-3 is pivotal in our understanding. We often view Creation as an event, e.g. creation, fall, redemption and restoration. In reality, the Bible is a story of creation and recreation. The Bible is a continual narrative rather than being a collection of stories and events. The New Testament is often viewed as a fulfilment and, hence, there is no need to link it to the Old Testament. The Puritans, when they travelled to America in the early colonial era, only brought the New Testament with them. The New Testament writers, however, used the Old Testament extensively to reference their teaching. When they were talking to Jews, they related their understanding of Judaism to make their teaching relevant to the audience. When dealing with Gentiles, they writers went right back to the Creation of the earth and mankind to put their writing into a full context. The New Testament has direct and indirect references from the Old Testament. The Book of Revelation can be best understood through its Old Testament language. When Jesus was preaching to the people, His teaching contained continual references to the Old Testament. The people would have a good understanding of His meaning. They would have understood His teaching better than we do because of their understanding of the Scriptures, beginning with Genesis. We need to spend time studying the Word, understanding the Word and enjoying the Word. As we do, we take the Creation account to be a narrative that begins with Eden and ultimately blossoms into the New Jerusalem, the creation of the final Eden. Mankind is on a journey towards that fulfilment of God s original plan and purpose. Gary Brummell

A PRESENTS COMMUNITY NEWS TERM 3 WEEK 7 ALL SCHOOL NEWS SHOWERS OF BLESSINGS Update Thank you to everyone, whether you or your families have donated to the Showers of Blessings appeal. We have heard that some of you are unaware of this appeal. Basically it is designed to help our NSW farmers get back on their feet after a drought that is severe. My brother and I started the appeal after watching TV one night, we saw how bad this drought was and how badly it was affecting the farmers, so we thought to ourselves what can we do about it? Even though there has been rain, the process of farmers getting enough produce to sell and make money will take up to 6 12 months. We currently have a few boxes of your donations but we are trying to fill a truck that has been sponsored by an anonymous donor which can take up to 200 boxes therefore we are still collecting non-perishable items - so that includes pretty much anything that won t expire. You can drop off the items in the front office or in the Primary office. If you can t donate I encourage you to at least take a few minutes out of your day and pray for the farmers. As mentioned before, a group of volunteers and I will be heading up to Tamworth in the holidays to distribute the goods and again, I would like to thank all who have contributed. Luke 6:31 Do to others as you would have them do to you. Jared and Jemuel GROW RULE FOR THE WEEK: Care for Equipment and Property Over the next two weeks, we will be focusing on demonstrating stewardship by caring for equipment and property. When we use resources properly and look after them it shows that we appreciate the gifts God has given us. If we care for equipment and property then things don t need to be replaced as often. Younger brothers and sisters will be able to use them, as well. By not having to replace these things then money is available for buying other things. Let us demonstrate good stewardship by caring for equipment and property. Get it? Got it! Gotcha! BOOK WEEK 2018: FIND YOUR TREASURE While most public libraries are celebrating Book Week in the third week of August, RPCS is celebrating Book Week for the whole of Term 3 with a special day in the second and third week of September. This is to give students more time to complete their reading challenge. Secondary and Primary students have been given an exciting challenge for reading their books during Term 3. They all need to find "their treasure" from their reading. Primary students need to find their wow words from each book they read. See the classroom teachers for different worksheets for each stage. Secondary students are to share their treasure in the form of book reviews or sharing interesting quotes from books. There are treasure walls to fill up in the secondary library as well as in the Primary learning areas. Let s find your treasure! MUSIC LESSONS RPCS offers engaging musical instrument tuition for Primary and Secondary students no need to drive students to lessons! We currently have spaces for violin, singing, and guitar students.. Our highly experienced tutors take the time to understand exactly what your student needs. See Mr Chavura for more information. Families of Primary students may collect an application form from Mrs Guerra. Families of Secondary students may collect one from Mr Chavura.

PRIMARY NEWS NEXT STEPS STAGE 3 PARENT INFORMATION EVENING Thank you to all those parents who were able to attend Monday s Information Evening. Our Wellbeing Coordinator spoke about the teenage brain, technology and resilience. Mr Jennings shared how students in Stage 3 are supported in these areas and Mrs Koulyras spoke how this support continues in Stage 4 (Years 7-8). Notes from the evening will be ed to all Stage 3 parents early next week. SCRIPTURE CHALLENGE PSALM 34 This term, we are celebrating the blessing that is Scripture. We are encouraging all of Primary to memorise Psalm 34 (NIV). Children can memorise as much or as little as they wish, but it would be lovely to have all of Primary standing together (including the parents) and reciting all 22 verses of this beautiful Psalm on our Bible Challenge Assembly on 21 September. Each week, we will be promoting about 3 verses. This week s verses are: "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. The righteous person may have many troubles but the Lord delivers him from them all; He protects all his bones, not one of them will be broken. TREASURE WALLS Visiting our Stage classrooms, you will see our Treasure Walls. One of the benefits of reading is the new vocabulary that we learn. Classes are displaying the treasure of new words that they have found in books. Here is one of the treasures that Stage 2 have found in their reading: CHINESE PARENTS BIBLE STUDY (MANDARIN) Every Wednesday from pm in H4 during school terms. mlin@rpcs.nsw.edu.au or Contact Michelle Lin at Heartbeat Church on PARENTS BREAKFAST & DEVOTION-PB&D PB&D is held every Tuesday in H4: Breakfast is provided from 8.30am, with a brief (15 min) devotion at 9am. Parents are welcome to stay for some or all of it. Our next Parents Breakfast and Devotion (PB&D) will be Tuesday, 18 September in Room H4. All parents welcome!

BOOK WEEK CELEBRATIONS - Friday, 14 Sept This Friday we are holding our Book Week Celebrations! We are looking forward to seeing all the creative costumes and hearing from the Australian author, Penny Morrison. The day will start with Assembly when we will have a Book Parade. We are asking children to come dressed as their favourite book character and to bring the book along, as well. An Australian author, Penny Morrison, will be visiting us and sharing with us about her book Captain Sneer the Buccaneer. She will be helping us to judge the book parade with prizes given for creativity. Afterwards, we will be having buddy reading and our Scholastic Book Fair. Parents are invited to come and join in the fun! We would love to have some parent volunteers to help us run the Fair. We need you to help the children find the books they want, take cash and Eftpos payments and help to keep everything neat and tidy. It will start after assembly and run until about lunch time. If you would like to help us please let Miss Bailey know. The Book Fair will be open for parents who would like to buy books on Thursday 13 September from pm in the Studio. It will also be open from 8-9am on Friday 14 September for parents only. If you would like to buy some books for you children you are very welcome! OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD Once again we are supporting the good work of Samaritan s Purse by preparing Christmas boxes for children in the Asia Pacific region. We are encouraging each family to participate and prepare a box for a boy or girl. This year, they are providing us with lists of shoebox gift ideas. Tables of gift ideas are available from the Primary office. Preprinted boxes are now available from the Primary office for 50c. All boxes need to be returned by Week 2, Term 4 (26 October). PRIMARY ASSEMBLY Each Friday (9:00-9:30am) we hold Primary Assembly in the school hall. This is a time when Primary classes come together to celebrate God s goodness. Parents and friends are very welcome to attend, particularly when your child s class is rostered to share in Assembly. Stage Assembly dates are listed below for your convenience: Class Kinder Book Week Bible Challenge (Parents Morning Tea) No Assembly Date 7 September 14 September 21 September 28 September LAST ASSEMBLY OF TERM 3-21 SEPTEMBER Because of the Year 12 Graduation, we will not hold Assembly on the last Friday of term. Our final Assembly of this term will be our Bible Challenge Assembly on 14 September. Our String Ensemble will also perform on this occasion. There will be a morning tea provided for our parents, as well. RETURN AND EARN Rockdale Return and Earn provide us with a Return and Earn service. They provide bins and collect them for us, depositing the money we earn into our account. All we need to do is return the right containers to the bin. Easy! Let us keep up the great work! Thanks to your great work, we have filled our two bins! The full bins will be collected and replaced with empty ones! Keep it up! Containers must be manufactured in Australia, have the 10c return symbol, be empty and not crushed. The Return and Earn bins have a green lid, are clearly labelled and are next to the Canteen. Please support our efforts to recycle and raise money for our Compassion children.

AGREE TO DISAGREE by Focus on the Family Some couples say they can t seem to agree on anything, when in truth, the arguments they have are just recurring ones. Arguments may manifest themselves differently but many of the core issues are usually the same. Some couples argue about money or time or how to raise the kids but what they re really struggling with is a different set of core values and the solution is to recognize this pattern and then get to the heart of the issue. For example, if money is behind most of your fights, ask yourself, What is the difference between our basic attitudes toward money? If one is a spender and the other is a saver, then the solution is a fair compromise. That means working out a budget that allows for savings, but also leaves a little for extra frills. And remember that some disagreements will never be solved. The key to peace in these areas is to agree to disagree, and then move forward. For more healthy advice, visit CRUNCH N SIP Good nutrition and healthy eating habits are an important part of learning. Each morning students enjoy Crunch n Sip, when they will have a drink of water and eat a serving of fresh fruit or vegetables. We ask parents to support this by providing your child with a serving of fresh fruit or vegetables for their Crunch n Sip break. Students should also bring a drink bottle filled with water. Rather than sweets or a packet of chips, why not pack a second Crunch n Sip for your child to enjoy at recess? Each week, the Cancer Council of NSW provide nutrition ideas to encourage healthy habits. Remember, Crunch n Sip means fruit or vegetables and water. For healthy lunch box ideas, visit Family meal times, by Healthy Kid Association ( Getting the whole family to sit down for dinner can be next to impossible with sport practice, working late and homework taking up the evening hours, many family members eat at whatever time best suits them. But research shows that families who eat together regularly (that s more than three times a week), have more positive outcomes when it comes to health, family relationships and social development. The family dinner table, after all, is where children learn manners, converse and interact with grownups, share what s happening in their lives and experience new foods. The preparation of food and the table setting process are all part of the roles in a family and shape thoughts and feelings around food and family. Benefits associated with frequent family meal times: Improved relationships between family members Increased intake of healthy foods and healthier eating habits Increased understanding of social behaviours Improved speech for children Better mental health outcomes Decreased risk of children taking up smoking, drugs or having problems with the law. What you can do: If you re not already eating together regularly, aim to do so one night a week. If dinnertime is too hard to get everyone together, try to have a special family breakfast on the weekends or a family lunch. During the week, don t worry if everyone can make it. Sit with whoever is at home and enjoy a meal. Ignore all phones, turn off the TV and ban texting at the table. At a loss for conversation? Ask each family member to share one good thing and one bad thing that happened during their day.

SECONDARY NEWS BOOK WEEK FIND YOUR TREASURE - CELEBRATION Book Week Lunch for Secondary students Wednesday, 19 September (during lunch time) Secondary students who completed their reading challenge will be invited to a luncheon in the library, where Mr Brummell will be sharing about his treasures before he leaves RPCS at the end of this year. Here are some of treasure walls in the Secondary library, where the students have shared their book reviews, quotes, as well as the messages their learnt from their readings. SCHOOL OF LANGUAGES - YEARS applications are now available from the Enrolment Officer, Mrs Dorizas, in the Front Office. Please note: this is for students to study their background language. The Saturday School of Community Languages gives students the opportunity to study the language they speak at home, if a course in that language is not offered at their weekday school. The school is a public secondary school, which delivers face-to-face lessons only on Saturdays. Over 3250 students in Years 7-12, from both government and nongovernment schools are enrolled. Saturday School students follow the NSW Education Standards Authority s syllabuses in 24 languages. These languages are accessible as part of their Stage 4, Stage 5 and Higher School Certificate studies. Languages available to study are Arabic, Armenian, Bengali (Bangla), Chinese (Mandarin), Croatian, Filipino, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Khmer, Korean, Macedonian, Maltese, Modern Greek, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Serbian, Spanish, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese. Studying a background community language provides the following benefits: Provides an opportunity to develop high levels of skills in a student s background community language. Improves performance across the curriculum through enhanced literacy skills which are transferable to English. Helps maintain rewarding relationships with parents, grandparents, relatives and other community members. Promotes a sense of cultural identity, resulting in heightened self-confidence and self-esteem. Places students in a better position to take advantage of employment opportunities. Please contact Mrs Dorizas if you are interested. SCHOLARS FC This is an interdisciplinary initiative led by Mr Brendan Archbold and Mr Nader Awad. Mr Archbold gives the following introduction: Last week saw the successful first session of Scholars FC, led by myself and Nader Awad. Scholars FC is an extra-curricular group which has started as a collaboration between the PDHPE and English faculties. The name comes from the fact that in some Premier League football clubs academy players which are completing their senior schooling are known as Scholars. The group had its first theory meeting last Friday, where we compared possession football against long ball football, with the students set the task of writing an essay or speech to try and argue which way of playing the game is better. This will be followed by a practical session next Friday in which different drills are played in order to develop the football skills that relate to these ideas. Some students may be able to use Scholars to develop coaching and leadership abilities. Our hope is to help the students to increase their reading, writing, analysing and critical thinking abilities while having fun playing a game that is loved the world over.

RPCS FUTURES COMMUNITY NEWS TERM 3 WEEK 7 YEAR 12 ANCIENT HISTORY EXCURSION On 5 September, the Year 12 Ancient History class went on an excursion to the Museum of Ancient Cultures in Macquarie University. As well as exploring more about the topics we covered in class, learning about numismatics and extracting information from ancient sources, it was a day of fun and enjoyment. We spent it engaging in beneficial and informative discussion on pressing ethical issues regarding ancient sources and the debates we took part in contributed to our knowledge of current issues as well as providing us with valuable and diverse outlooks that further add to our knowledge of ancient history. This excursion was productive and highly recommended, as it offers students a chance to utilise skills learnt in class into practical use. (by Pascal Haddad) On 5 September Year 12 went to the Museum of Ancient Cultures at Macquarie University. We went to learn about the Ancient societies and cultures that were there. While we were there we participated in debates and drew and dated coins. This allowed us to see the significance of certain aspects of history in dating what happened when, as well as seeing the difficulties that historians go through when making choices regarding artefacts. Through this trip many of us came to conclusions about topics and issues that we hadn t thought about before. This excursion is recommended to all people who have an interest in ancient history.
