During my time as pastor, the custom has been to publish a complete financial report on the weekend after Labor Day. That report, covering the period July through June , is included in today s bulletin. I want to offer a few comments on the history, and add some detail, to the paragraph concerning our Educational Foundation. When I became pastor of St Charles in 1987, it was clear to me that some long-range planning was needed to guarantee the financial future of our parish school. Our starting salary for a teacher back then was $16,000; with such a low salary, a teacher also qualified for food stamps. In 1987, personal computers were in their infancy, but they were clearly the wave of the future. If our school was to keep up we would have to make technology a top priority. In 1988, I asked some talented and knowledgeable parishioners for their help. We established the St Charles Borromeo School Endowment. All extra parish funds, special gifts, and bequests went to the Endowment. I mentioned the Endowment in the bulletin, from time-to-time, but there was never any high pressure or any formal campaign. In those early years, Endowment funds were professionally managed by National City Bank and Ameritrust. We did very well during the 1990 s. We particularly benefitted from bequests. Several families established scholarships to aid needy children. After ten years time, in 1998, we started to use a portion of the interest earned to meet school expenses. Those earnings helped to keep our tuition among the lowest in the Diocese. In 2006, we sought advice to keep the Endowment strictly under the control of St Charles Borromeo Parish. The proper legal steps were taken to create the St Charles Borromeo Educational Foundation. The assets of the 1988 Endowment were transferred in 2006 to the Foundation. The Foundation board meets quarterly and consists of the pastor, principal, and three knowledgeable parishioners. All investments are professionally managed by PNC Bank, Raymond James Investments, and TD Ameritrade. The Foundation is legally recognized by the federal and state governments as a non-profit I.R.S. 501 C-3 charitable entity. For , as in , from interest earnings, the Foundation will provide $260,000 to our school budget; each child receives a $775 scholarship; so without the Foundation, our tuition would be at least $775 higher. A St Charles teacher s starting salary is now $35,000 and we are able to provide proper benefits for our school employees. St Charles Parish is also blessed to have the Youth Group Trust; interest earnings from the Youth Trust underwrite spiritual and educational programs for St Charles teens. Interest from our St Charles Borromeo Vocation Scholarships helps with the expenses of those parishioners pursuing a religious or priestly vocation. Our Sanctuary Memorial Fund provides permanent items for our worship needs. I hope all of the above information is helpful. When making your will, or when considering charitable or memorial donations, please remember our St Charles Borromeo Educational Foundation, Youth Group Trust, Vocation Scholarships, and Sanctuary Memorial Fund. Those who came before us have been so very generous and we have benefitted from their generosity. Now it is our turn to provide for those who will come after us!

5 St Charles Borromeo Parish 5891 Ridge Road Parma Ohio Dear St Charles Borromeo Parishioner: 9 September 2018 It has been my practice, since I became pastor in 1987, to provide a comprehensive State of the Parish report on the weekend after Labor Day. In addition to financial matters, you will also find a report on parish membership and on sacramental activities. The generosity of so many and the principles of good stewardship make this report a necessity. And of course your comments and your questions are always most welcome. As has been our practice for the last several years, this report is offered on a comparison basis. The heart of this report is the financial accounting of parish and school receipts and expenses for the period July to June You can also compare those figures to last year s performance and you can review what is budgeted for the upcoming fiscal year As you will see, it was a good year; we managed to live within our income. Our Rainy Day Fund depends on the proceeds from our Summer Carnivals and on the rental received from the two cellphone antennas. The Rainy Day Fund pays for our major capital improvements and for the cost of unexpected emergency repairs and replacements. On the back page, you will find a report on our four invested funds: St Charles Borromeo Educational Foundation, St Charles Youth Group Trust, St Charles Vocation Scholarships, and our Sanctuary Memorial Fund. All four enjoyed excellent returns again this year as the investment markets continued to climb. Interest income from our Educational Foundation will provide $260,000 for our school in helping to keep our day school tuition among the lowest in the Diocese. Please remember our four funds when making your will or when considering your charitable or memorial donations. My weekly column in today s parish bulletin gives the history and details of those four funds. In 2003, we inaugurated the My Fair Share approach to parish financial support. Parishioners agreed that those who ask to be members of St Charles Parish should be expected to support the work the parish does. My Fair Share information for 2019 will be mailed during September; please complete and return those materials promptly. One small thing that every parishioner could easily do is participate in our Shopping Gift Certificate Program; if you do not do so already, please stop by the Parish Office and start using our Gift Certificate Program this week. Just do your regular shopping and St Charles will receive a rebate. At minimum, please purchase your grocery and gasoline gift cards from us. Those few cents on a dollar quickly add up and all monies earned benefit the education of St Charles children. Thank you to the men and women of our St Charles Borromeo Finance Council; they willingly share their expertise and professional talents; their wise advice and steady counsel are a true blessing! Thank you to all of you who are so very generous to St Charles in so many ways; you make my pastoral responsibilities a daily joy. May our parish also be as blessed in mercy, kindness, compassion, and forgiveness!
